Noticed that the R&R Country Top 50 Songs Chart that gets updated each Wednesday on R&R site is different. Instead of spin totals by each song it now reads POINTS. Before, when it read spins, sometimes a song with less spins was ranked higher than a song with more spins. But now that it reads points, songs are ranked in point order.

The points are derived from a calculation that takes into account the spins a song has, the audience it has, what stations are playing the song (bigger stations get more 'weight' in the formula, so a spin at WUSN is worth more than spins at a tiny station), and god knows what else. Things like a song's age and rate of climb or descent may also come into play. As far as I know the formula isn't published anywhere. I'm glad the public chart now lists the points, since that's how it's really been ranked anyway. It eliminates those confusing situations where a song is listed behind a song, when the song ahead of it has fewer spins. I think the public list should just go ahead and include ALL the other info that I have access to through a contact with connections, but for some reason they don't want everyone to know. I don't know why they can't include 'points bullet' so you can tell at a glance how well it's doing in relation to other songs. That's on the chart I get faxed to me. The 'green' list still mistakingly shows 'total plays' in the header for the points column: www.radioandrecords.com/Charts/cou_chart.shtmThe 'blue' list is correct: www.radioandrecords.com/Formats/Charts/Country_Chart.asp

They're still in the process of initiating a MAJOR shakeup in their charts, where thereporting panel will be expanded to 150 stations, and those 150 stations will be different EVERY week.
Should make for LOTS of pyrotechnics on the charts whenever that changeover takes place.

The points are derived from a calculation that takes into account the spins a song has, the audience it has, what stations are playing the song (bigger stations get more 'weight' in the formula, so a spin at WUSN is worth more than spins at a tiny station) I find that third factor kind of unnecessary, since counting audience would already take care of that.
