16 year old New Zealand singer Lorde unseats Katy Perry this week on Rick's chart as "Royals" takes over the top spot this week. While we still have a battle this week amongst the top 3 female singers with one work song names, look for Lorde to stay on top for awhile, or at least until first timer Avici makes a run towards the top with "Wake Me Up". In the meantime, the two "sound alike" songs appear back-to-back on the chart again with "Brave" and "Roar" #3 and #2 respectively this week.
Lot's of other newcomers on the chart this week, with Passenger breaking in with their first top 10 hit, "Let Her Go". Debuting this week at #35 is newcomer John Newman with "Love Me Again", while somewhat newcomers Awolnation has this week's Sure Shot with "Sail", a song that hit #5 on the alternative charts in 2011. Better late than ever for crossing over to this chart!
And a year would not be complete without a song taking an unusual drop off of Rick's chart. The latest candidate would be "Bruises" by Train and Ashley Monroe, fall clear off the chart all the way from #14. The drop is not completely without merit this time though as this song did take a big tumble down the Mediabase Hot AC chart the last two weeks, dropping from the mid teens to the lower 30's had it not been moved to the recurrent chart. Still, I would have thought it would have stuck around maybe one or two more weeks without the typical huge drop off without any warning that is seen from time to time here.
The Lumineer's "Ho Hey" makes their second appearance in three weeks on Rick's Bonus Tracks list. And the "bad timing award" goes to another Bonus Track, Jordin Spark and Chris Brown's "No Rain", played not more than 20 minutes after Rihanna's "Stay" and Rick's quote from Rihanna about she doesn't have to deal with the drama after Chris got charged with assault this week. I guess the world can't get enough of misbehavior these days!
