www.billboard.com/articles/news/5800848/eminems-back-at-no-1-with-marshall-mathers-lp-2Billboard.comEminem's Back at No. 1 with 'Marshall Mathers LP 2'By Keith Caulfield, L.A. | November 27, 2013 Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" returns to the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200, shifting 120,000 copies in its third week (down 43%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the second week at the top for the set, which stepped aside last week to let Lady Gaga's "ARTPOP" open atop the list. This week, "ARTPOP" moves to No. 8 with 46,000 (down 82%). It's the third No. 1 debut this year to decline by 80% in its second frame, following Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience" (2 of 2) (down 80.1%) and Kanye West's "Yeezus" (down 80.3%). It's become more common to see No. 1 debuts dip by more than 75% in their second week, as increased focus is placed on first-week sales and pre-orders. That emphasis can drive debut sales to great heights, but also create situations where an album cannot sustain those front-loaded sales into its second week. Aside from Gaga, Timberlake and West, we've seen seven further No. 1 debuts slip by 75%-79% this year. Five Finger Death Punch scores the chart's highest debut this week, as its new "The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Volume 2" debuts at No. 2 with 77,000. It's the second straight No. 2 set for the act, which also debuted and peaked at No. 2 earlier this year with "The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell: Volume 1" (a career-high sales week of 112,000 in its debut). The "Now 48" album holds at No. 3 with 63,000 (down 45%), as does the Robertsons' "Duck the Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas" at No. 4 with 60,000 (down 9%). The new "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" soundtrack enters at No. 5 with 55,000. That's less than the 175,000 that greeted the first week of the first "Hunger Games" album in early 2012. It debuted at No. 1. The first "Hunger Games" soundtrack sported two contributions from Taylor Swift, which may have accounted for some of it its robust debut week. (Swift is not on the "Catching Fire" album.) Daughtry's new "Baptized" album arrives at No. 6 with just over 55,000, securing the band its fourth consecutive top 10 studio effort (it's entire output). Their last album, 2011's "Break the Spell," debuted and peaked at No. 8 off a start of 129,000. Rapper Yo Gotti notches his best week ever, as "I Am" debuts at No. 7 with 48,000. It's the highest chart position and sales week yet for the artist, who previously topped out at No. 12 with "Live From the Kitchen," which was released in December of 2011. Kelly Clarkson's "Wrapped In Red" album descends 6-9 with 44,000 (though it's up by 6%). Closing out the top 10 is Minneapolis radio station KTCZ with its new "Cities 97 Sampler, Live From Studio C: Vol. 25." The live compilation blasts in at No. 10 -- a record high for the long-running series. It sold 40,000 copies in its debut frame -- the entire production run of the annual album. The set features live performances recorded at the station over the past year and 100% of the proceeds benefit local charities. (Due to publishing and label gratis licensing restrictions for charity albums, the production run of the album was limited to 40,000.) The album features Passenger, fun. and Phillip Phillips, and was available exclusively at local Target stores in Minneapolis for $32.97. According to KTCZ, the compilation has raised $11.5 million for local charities since its launch in 1989. Over on the Digital Songs chart, Eminem's "The Monster," featuring Rihanna, is stationary at No. 1, selling another 241,000 downloads (down 1%). Lorde's "Royals" is up one rung to No. 2 with 177,000 (up 12%) and OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" dips 2-3 with 167,000 (though it's up by 2%). Pitbull's "Timber," featuring Ke$ha, is steady at No. 4 with just under 166,000 (up 15%) and Imagine Dragons' "Demons" is also a non-mover at No. 5, with 124,000 (down 3%). A Great Big World's "Say Something," featuring Christina Aguilera, rebounds 12-6 with 121,000 (up 59%) while Passenger's "Let Her Go" climbs 8-7 with 117,000 (up 3%). Avicii's "Wake Me Up" slips 6-8 with 101,000 (down 15%), Katy Perry's "Roar" falls 7-9 with 99,000 (down 16%) and Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" holds at No. 10 with 89,000 (down 16%). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Nov. 24) totaled 5.29 million units, down 2% compared with the sum last week (5.39 million) and down 46% compared with the comparable sales week of 2012 (9.74 million). Year to date album sales stand at 245.01 million, down 9% compared to the same total at this point last year (267.78 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 19.52 million downloads, down 2% compared with last week (19.88 million) and down 19% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (24.06 million). Year to date track sales are at 1.13 billion, down 4% compared to the same total at this point last year (1.19 billion). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2012 when: Alicia Keys' "Girl On Fire" debuted at No. 1, selling 159,000. It was the only debut in the top 25.

It's the second week at the top for the set, which stepped aside last week to let Lady Gaga's "ARTPOP" open atop the list. I was surprised the article didn't mention it, but the last time an album returned to #1 from a lower position was March of this year, when Mumford & Sons' "Babel" hit #1 for the first time since October the previous year.

^This was just the album's third week- Mumford's album returning to No. 1 was a bigger deal, IMO, as it had been out for a lengthier amount of time. And didn't it return to the top from a position lower than No. 2?

music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/chart-watch-eminem-returns-1-gaga-sinks-8-154950758.htmlChart Watch: Eminem Returns to #1, Gaga Sinks to #8By Paul Grein 1 hour ago Yahoo Music Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2 returns to the #1 spot on The Billboard 200, displacing Lady Gaga's ARTPOP, which tumbles to #8 after a single week on top. (More on that in a minute.) All seven of Eminem's #1 albums have spent multiple weeks at #1. Since 1991, when Nielsen SoundScan began tracking music sales, only two artists have had seven albums that each logged multiple frames at #1: Eminem and Garth Brooks. The Marshall Mathers LP 2 has sold 1,124,000 copies in its first three weeks, which puts it at #6 for the year-to-date. This will be the sixth year that Eminem has placed an album in Nielsen SoundScan's year-end top 10. Only two other artists, Brooks and Mariah Carey, have achieved that feat. Eminem previously scored with The Marshall Mathers LP (#2 for 2000), The Eminem Show (#1 for 2002), Encore (#3 for 2004), Relapse (#8 for 2009) and Recovery (#1 for 2010). In the coming week, The Marshall Mathers LP 2 will pass Drake's Nothing Was The Same (1,130,000) to become the year's best-selling hip-hop album. This is Eminem's fourth album to return to #1 after being kicked out of the top spot. The Eminem Show, Encore and Recovery also showed that resiliency. Eminem's new album also returns to #1 on Top Digital Albums. It sold 51K digital copies this week. Five Finger Death Punch's fifth studio album, Wrong Side Of Heaven & The Righteous Side Of Hell, Vol. 2, debuts at #2. Vol. 1 debuted and peaked at #2 in August. Did you notice that both the #1 and #2 albums are sequels? Sequels have been big at the box-office for decades. We're starting to see more and more of them on the record charts. Four other sequels appear in this week's top 50: Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience (2 Of 2), The Beatles' On Air—Live At The BBC, Volume 2, Mannheim Steamroller/Czech Philharmonic Orchestra's Christmas Symphony II and 2 Chainz' B.O.A.T.S. II: ME TIME. The Robertsons' Duck The Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas holds at #4 for the second week. It's #1 on Top Country Albums for the fourth week. It's #1 on Top Christmas Albums for the third week. Over the past four weeks, the number of Christmas albums on The Billboard 200 has swelled from 18 to 25 to 38 to 46. How high will that number go? Stay tuned. The Christmas albums on The Billboard 200 include some old standbys. And I do mean old. Frank Sinatra's Christmas Songs By Sinatra first charted in1949. Bing Crosby's White Christmas is an adaptation of his Merry Christmas, which first charted in 1945. The soundtrack to The Hunger Games 2: Catching Fire debuts at #5. The soundtrack to the first The Hunger Games movie debuted at #1 in March 2012. There have been only two other movie franchises where the first two installments both spawned top five soundtrack albums: Star Wars and Twilight. The new album enters Top Soundtracks at #1. The soundtrack from the first movie headed that chart for five weeks. It wound up as last year's best-selling soundtrack. (There's little chance of The Hunger Games 2 equaling that feat. Pitch Perfect has that title in the bag, with sales of 734K so far in 2013.) Last but not least, the sequel was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. The first movie was #1 for four straight weekends. Daughtry's fourth album, Baptized, debuts at #6. All four albums have made the top 10. Of the hundreds of contestants who have walked across the American Idol stage over the past 12 years, Chris Daughtry is one of just five to amass four or more top 10 albums. Kelly Clarkson, the first Idol winner, leads with six, followed by Clay Aiken with five and Carrie Underwood and Scotty McCreery, also with four each. (Fantasia and Kellie Pickler are next in line, with three top 10 albums each.) Yo Gotti's second studio album, I Am, debuts at #7. It's his first top 10 album. Earth, Wind & Fire hit #3 in July 1979 with an album with the same title. Nas hit #1 in April 1999 with an album titled I Am… As noted, Gaga's ARTPOP drops from #1 to #8. That's a big disappointment: Gaga's previous album, Born This Way, spent its first two weeks at #1. After two weeks, ARTPOP has sold 305K copies. After two weeks, Born This Way had sold 1,285,000 copies (including 845K at full price). Sales of Gaga's album dropped by 82% this week. Only three #1 albums in the Nielsen SoundScan era have experienced such steep drops in their second week. (Madonna's MDNA dropped by 87% in its second week; Gaga's Born This Way dropped by 84%; Mac Miller's Blue Slide Park dropped by 83%.) But it's not fair to make too much of this. Albums are simply taking steeper second week drops than they used to. Of the 10 #1 albums that have experienced second week drops of 78% or more, nine have been released since December 2010. Cities 97 Sampler, Vol. 25 debuts at #10. This is the 25th annual installment of the Cities 97 sampler, which consists of live, in-studio recordings from radio station Cities 97 (KTCZ-FM) in Minneapolis. This year's volume includes songs by such hit-makers as Capital Cities, Phillip Phillips, Neon Trees, fun. and Passenger. Proceeds go to Minnesota-based charities. "The Monster" by Eminem featuring Rihanna holds at #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the third week (241K). The team's "Love The Way You Lie" was the best-selling digital hit for seven weeks in 2010. Will "The Monster" knock Lorde's "Royals" off its throne on the Hot 100 this week? You'll find out later today when we post my Songs blog. Here’s a recap of this week’s top 10 albums. The Top Five: Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2 rebounds from #2 to #1 in its third week (120K). It has been in the top five the entire time…Five Finger Death Punch's Wrong Side Of Heaven & The Righteous Side Of Hell, Vol. 2, debuts at #2 (77K). It's the band's fourth top 10 album… NOW 48 holds at #3 in its second week (63K)… The Robertsons' Duck The Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas holds at #4 for the second week in its fourth week (60K). It has been in the top five the entire time… The Hunger Games 2: Catching Fire soundtrack debuts at #5 (55K). The Second Five: Daughtry's Baptized debuts at #6 (55K). It's the band's fourth top 10 album… Yo Gotti's I Am debuts at #7 (47K). It's his first top 10 album… Lady Gaga's ARTPOP drops from #1 to #8 in its second week (46K).…Kelly Clarkson's Wrapped In Red drops from #6 to #9 in its fourth week (44K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time…Cities 97 Sampler, Vol. 25 debuts at #10 (40K). Katy Perry's Prism, which drops from #5 to #11 this week, tops the 500K mark in its fifth week of release. That's faster than either of her previous releases. Perry's 2008 debut, One Of The Boys, took 20 weeks to reach 500K. Her 2010 sophomore album, Teenage Dream, took nine weeks. The Beatles' On Air—Live At The BBC, Volume 2 drops from #7 to #29 in its second week. It's only the second Beatles album ever to drop out of the top 10 after just one week. The first was 2003's Let It Be…Naked. Three other albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Jhene Aiko's Sail Out drops from #8 to #30. Drake's Nothing Was The Same drops from #9 to #14. Lorde's Pure Heroine drops from #10 to #12. Mary J. Blige's A Mary Christmas leaps from #21 to #13 in its sixth week, as a result of a promotion at HSN (Home Shopping Network). This is its highest ranking to date. Michael Buble's 2011 album Christmas jumps from #21 to #19 in its 24th chart week. It's #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 11th week. Susan Boyle's Home For Christmas rebounds from #23 to #20 in its fourth week. The album debuted and peaked (so far) at #19. Holiday album king David Foster produced Blige's album and co-produced Buble's. Miley Cyrus' Bangerz drops from #11 to #16 in its seventh week. The album tops the 500K mark in sales this week. She worked it and twerked it and defied all the doubters. Phillip Phillips' The World From The Side Of The Moon also tops the 500K mark in 2013 sales this week. The album sold an additional 533K copies in 2012. (Give American Idol the bulk of the credit for the 2012 sales. Give Phillips' personal appeal the bulk of the credit for the 2013 sales.) Nickelback's The Best Of Nickelback, Volume 1 debuts at #21. In days of yore (before iTunes made greatest hits albums far less consequential), this would have been a top five album. Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival 2013 debuts at #25. This is Clapton's sixth live album (as a solo artist) to crack the top 30…Webbie's fourth studio album, Savage Life 4, debuts at #27. The first two installments made the top 10. The third peaked at #17…Rush's Clockwork Angels Tour debuts at #33. The Rush and Clapton music videos are #1 and #2 on Top Music Videos. (Details below.) Adele's 21 this week becomes the first album to sell 3 million digital copies. 21 has sold 10,798,000 copies in all, which puts it at #13 on Nielsen SoundScan's running tally of the best-selling albums since 1991. Here's the breakdown: The album has sold 7,757,000 CDs (72% of the total), 3 million digital copies (28%) and 40K vinyl LPs (less than 1%). As of this week, Lynyrd Skynyrd has sold 20 million albums in the Nielsen SoundScan era. The band released its first album in August 1973, so this tally doesn't count its first 17 years and five months of sales. Its biggest digital hits are "Sweet Home Alabama" (3,121,000), "Free Bird" (2,111,000) and "Simple Man" (1,333,000). Robbie Williams' Swings Both Ways enters the U.K.'s Official Albums Chart at #1. The album, a sequel to Williams' 2001 swing album, Swing When You're Winning, is Williams' 11th solo album to reach #1. For all his success in the U.K., Williams has never really caught on in the U.S. His highest-charting album (solo or as a member of Take That) on The Billboard 200 is Escapology, which peaked at #43 in 2003. Two music videos got off to fast starts this week. Rush's Clockwork Angels sold 25K. Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival 2013 sold 19K. Rush's tally is the highest first-week tally for a video since One Direction’s Up All Night—The Live Tour started with sales of 76K in June 2012. It’s the highest one-week tally for a video by a rock band since Rush’s previous video, Beyond The Lighted Stage, started with 34K in July 2010. Coming Attractions: Look for One Direction's Midnight Memories to debut at #1 next week with a total north of 550K. Also vying to debut in the top 10: A Day To Remember's Common Courtesy (45K) and Danielle Bradbery's eponymous debut album (35K). Bradbery was The Voice's Season 4 champ. Happy Thanksgiving, everybody.

And didn't it return to the top from a position lower than No. 2? It did in fact come from a position lower than #2. From Billboard's article of the event (http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/chart-alert/1549356/mumford-sons-babel-makes-grammy-fueled-return-to-no-1-on): The article cites not just the Grammy win but also a Valentine's Day sale on iTunes and then-new deluxe versions of the album being released.

Two things:
1. Did HITS completely miss Nickelback?
2. "Cities 97 Sampler, Live From Studio C: Vol. 25." at No. 10 -- a record high for the long-running series. It sold 40,000 copies in its debut frame -- the entire production run...
When was the last non-Xmas album to drop off the charts from inside the Top 10? Cause it's gonna happen next week.

I know that in this time of year, one can explain the low digital single sales by saying that the people are waiting for their iTunes gift cards, but come on, this has been going on for many months now. Why are digital sales so low this year? what happened? see the weekly decreases in comparison to last year. Christmas week better make up for this disappointing year!

I didn't think of that, it makes a lot of sense. Thanks guys! I guess it's worth it for the labels since they're allowing it...

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/chart-alert/5811928/chart-moves-mary-j-blige-holiday-sales-sizzle-awolnationsChart Moves: Mary J. Blige 'Holiday' Sales Sizzle, AWOLNATION's 'Symphony' Sees Big Gain By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | November 28, 2013 This week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" returned to No. 1, spending a second week in the top slot. The album sold 120,000 copies last week (down 43%). Last week's No. 1, Lady Gaga's "ARTPOP," fell to No. 8 in its second week, selling 46,000 (down 82%). As usual, there were a number of movers and shakers outside the top 10 on the Billboard 200 this week. Let's take a look at some of them: -- Mary J. Blige, "A Mary Holiday" - No. 13 - Starbucks recently began carrying the album, which is up by 110% to 31,000 -- its best sales week yet. The set rises 22-13 (a new peak) and also benefits from a performance from Blige on HSN, which aired on Nov. 17. -- Sammy Adams, "Homecoming" (EP) - No. 45 - After more than three years away from the chart, the Boston rapper returns with his new EP, bowing with 8,000. It follows his Boston's Boy EP, which debuted and peaked at No. 73 on March 20, 2010 with just under 8,000. -- Ghost B.C., "If You Have a Ghost" - No. 87 - Dave Grohl produced this five-song EP (5,000) for the Swedish metal band, which includes covers of Depeche Mode ("Waiting for the Night") and fellow Swedish acts Army of Lovers ("Cruicified") and ABBA ("I'm a Marionette"). -- AWOLNATION, "Megalithic Symphony" - No. 104 - The album was reissued on Nov. 19 in a deluxe edition, which sports an additional CD's worth of bonus tracks and remixes. The new version helps pump a 93% sales gain for the set, which rises to 5,000 for the week. -- Cody Simpson, "The Acoustic Sessions" (EP) - No. 118 - The singer's new five-song acoustic set (selling a bit more than 4,000) boasts a cover of the holiday standard "Please Come Home For Christmas." The EP will be supported by an Acoustic Sessions tour, which kicks off Jan. 10 in Santa Ana, Calif. and wraps on Jan. 31 in Denver. -- Alan Jackson, "The Bluegrass Album" - No. 125 - The set becomes the year's biggest-selling bluegrass album this week, as its total sales rise to 82,000. It jumps ahead of Steve Martin & Edie Brickell's "Love Has Come For You" (81,000). -- Trans-Siberian Orchestra, "Christmas Eve and Other Stories" - No. 142 - The album return to the list this week, and is always a popular seller around the holidays. The 1996 release is the ninth-largest selling holiday set of the SoundScan era (1991-present), with 3.4 million sold. It continues to sell well, all these years later. In 2012, it shifted 92,000 and in 2011 it moved 87,000 -- with the bulk of those sales coming around Christmas. -- Fifth Harmony, "Better Together" (Acoustic) - No. 189 - It's the fourth charting set for the vocal quintet, as they released a studio version of this album earlier this year (No. 6 debut and peak), along with a Spanish EP titled "Juntos" (No. 2 on Latin Albums) and "Juntos: Acoustic" (No. 12 on Latin).
