Rock as a movement appears to be branching off into 2 distinct paths: highly pop-styled rock that may incorporate other genres (Fall Out Boy, Paramore, 5 Seconds of Summer, American Authors) and indie rock/folk that provides a solid backing to the American chart's lower regions with the occasional hit (big examples being the aforementioned Hozier, Imagine Dragons, and KONGAS, with minor examples being artists like Vance Joy, Milky Chance, OK Go, alt-j, and The Black Keys). Together (though slanting towards the latter), I consider these to be the current status of Rock as a whole. The previous era's Rock and what is currently categorized as "Mainstream Rock" (artists like 3 Days Grace, Nickelback, Slipknot, Seether, and Godsmack) is pretty much relegated to its own radio set and has yet to produce a major single representative this year. There are also the classics who have stuck around (AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Rolling Stones) but they too haven't produced successful content that doesn't primarily benefit from the long-term fans and the current album environment (a similar conundrum a number of the previous category face, such as Slipknot and Seether). The scene has changed; indie and pop rock are quickly becoming the face of this era's rock.

But again, it's not quite at that point yet, so I admit I was hasty to tag the current movement as rock. (I swear I don't try to make every post into a mini-essay... )

I completely agree with you on this! Not to mention the controversy in which Lorde was labeled as 'rock' in the VMAs when in fact she is alternative pop. Music keeps on growing and as of today, indie and rock are considered two different genres. Put in mind that acts like Ellie Goulding and Capital Cities are considered indie. Indie is responsible for several cross-over hits (Radioactive, Sail, Ho Hey, Somebody That I Used to Know, Some Nights, Lights, Pompeii); the latter stayed in the Hot 100 for more than 50 weeks. Metal, a completely different genre, is less likely to achieve multiple formats.

Still, you have to agree on me about Foster the People. Peaked at #3 within 40 weeks in 2011, rose to fame after widespread attention within radio formats, held responsible for initiating the rise of indie movement in the 2010s... They might not be relevant now, but they did made history. Please do not ignore this. :)

For the record, I would have to say that all the music movements that are being enjoyed right now all started in 2011. It was really Cee-Lo Green's "F*ck You" that launched the whole pop-soul movement that carried into this year, "Happy" is just a continuation of it, though "Happy" did help revitalize the soundtrack song popularity along with "Let It Go" which had been missing for years. "Pumped Up Kicks" was the song that lauched the whole indie movement that's now become prominent with Gotye's song being the most popular of the movement. And Adele launched the piano ballad, and powerful female vocalist movement that is happening these days. "Dark Horse", though, did spark a movement with trap music and urban-sounding music in general becoming a thing. All of this while dance/EDM/electro-pop music, which had been dominating the first couple of years and was a take off from the late 2000's had been sort of pushed aside in favor of these music movements, and has been relegated to just a music genre that's simply there, but it's presence is still intact. If you think about it, 2011 for the most part was the year that pretty much has given us an indication of where music is going to go, and I've been happy with the results. But I'm not surprised, usually is the second year of each decade where the music really find it's identity, so if this is what's going to be popular through the 2010's in pop, I'm all for it. What does need to improve though, is the state of rap, R&B and country, those 3 genres are in need of a makeover, and things need to change there because for the past several years I feel like these genres have been sounding the same, and not in a good way. I think a change would most likely be welcome for those genres of music. 2014 overall was a very interesting and diverse year in music in conclusion, not as interesting as last year, but still interesting.

Streaming helped longevity greatly. One song might already wilted totally in sales and radio (or might not be a strong one in both at all) but if the streaming is strong enough, it will hang around for a while. An extreme case? Sail. Sail never enter the Airplay chart at all, and Sales peaked outside of top 10, kinda surprising huh? To sum it up, the reason why Sail's run is such a thriller is because most of it's point came from Streaming, and you know how up and down streaming is, it's extremely lucky that it never fell below 50 in all those weeks it spent in the 40's (which might as well be 40 of it's total week) Radioactive's early run is aided mostly by streaming, Radioactive enter Airplay chart when it reach top 10. And, a fun fact, both of them spend more than 100 weeks in the On Demand chart.

2011 was the year that I finally began to take an interest in popular music (prior to that it was either kid music or music from Pump it Up, a.k.a. classical remixes and Korean Pop for the most part that wouldn't be relevant), and I always had the idea that it was an important year with all the styles I didn't really notice in 2010 (to be fair, my only experience was in either at year-end school parties or gym, which stuck with 2008-2010's overexposure of both dance fads and club bangers), but I never voiced that out because I thought it might've been one of those "adolescent year when you get into music is biased to be seen by you as the best". Glad to see some others agree, and I do indeed believe in "Pumped Up Kicks"' status as the indie rock kickstart.

Anyway, back on topic, I do agree about Country, R&B, and Rap getting a bit weird in mainstream hits. Too much to get through in one sitting, but let's look at the Country hits on here:

7. Bartender
8. Drunk on a Plane
9. Drink a Beer
10. Beachin'
11. Give Me Back My Hometown

I am liking how some of these songs are either setting up a conflicting mood through the instrumental (Bottoms Up, Bartender, Drunk on a Plane), or energizing themselves by either going back to a more 00's sound (Somethin' Bad), having a more straight rock edge (Give Me Back My Hometown, Leave the Night On, American Kids), or just being style changes for their artists (Dirt, Drink a Beer, though I like the latter more in concept than in execution. Also Burnin' it Down, but...). However, the damage of 2013 is still done, with a disproportionate amount of what has been dubbed "bro-country" tracks in that top half, with the worst of them at the top. I'm also not a fan of steering Country into the R&B direction as Jason Aldean has started with his biggest hit this year; I know I said I was liking the more rockish tracks, but that feels more natural because guitar has nearly always felt like an accepted implement for the Country music sound. As simply a chill background track, "Burnin' it Down" is passable (though unusually blunt for a Country song: "Jammin' to some old Alabama with you, baby, laying right here; naked in my bed"), but as a possible trend, it does worry me a bit.

D'oh! It'll be close, but it all depends on how close the estimates for #21-#100 positions were for this prediction (The top 20 used statistics close to the real thing, while the rest were flat values as far as I know). Either way, if it makes it in, shouldn't do much better than #95.

"Neon Lights" will make it. Despite only peaking at 36 (the song was hanging and alternating in the 30's for several weeks), it's performance was strong enough to guarantee it a year end position on the official list.

My question is if "New Flame" by Chris Brown will make the list. It only peaked at #27 and will have charted just 18 weeks during the chart year, but it has spent 14 of its 18 weeks in the top 50, and in all but one of those weeks is been at the 20s and the 30s. Will it be enough to get it in the year end list?

I'm am praying Chandelier makes it, as he will also be adding songs popular this month (probably Animals and maybe Habits). Earworm has been pretty rubbish since 2011/2012 (bar his Summer 2013 mix). I am more excited for DJ Drybones'! Also, I have made my own 2014 mix (my channel is DylanGLC). I found mine quite upbeat, and I only used Timber instrumental for the choruses!

Katy and Iggy tie for most credited entries (4) on the year-end tally (although Iggy is featured artist on 2 of said tracks). Not far behind with 3 each are Jason, Ariana, Sam and Chris.

Iggy will only be featured on 3 songs in the official list. Don't expect "No Mediocre" to make the official year end list. It'll make this list, but in reality, it's chart performance was weak and made its run late in the year, and peaking at 33 in only one week despite charting 20 weeks isn't good enough to make the official list, especially if you chart late in the year. I also don't see "Drink A Beer", "Studio", nor "Give Me Back My Hometown" making it. I actually think "Take Me To Church" has a good chance to make the actual list because of it being in the top 10 and charting 14 weeks despite the little amount of weeks in the top tier. I also see "Paranoid", "Adore You" and "I Don't Dance" making it. Katy Perry having 4 singles in the year end list is very misleading of how her year in music was. She still had a good year with "Dark Horse" officially becoming her biggest hit to date, but she's also had some of her weakest performing singles to date, which will be the lowest positioned year end songs to date of her career, "Roar" was a holdover from last year, and "This Is How We Do" was a complete flop, so she had a good year and not-so-good year at the same time. Overall, I do expect the official list to look more or less like this aside from that, some songs will be positioned higher, and some lower than this list, but for the most part, it'll be almost identical.

Does anyone know what that rule is some people mention? Supposedly, Billboard splits the points after July/August. For example, half of Shake It Off's points will go to 2014, while the other half goes towards 2015. This would, in my opinion, dramatically change the list..

I got the top 5 songs right (just switched #3 and #4) , 6 to 12 is also the same songs (just mixed up) same for 13-16. 17-20 as well with only 19 & 20 switching.

For the most part, you were very close, for a lot of songs only 1-5 spot difference. Also, didn't you not start till later in 2013? I have a feeling this year'll be much more on target!
