Doesn't Elvis have 17 number ones? Why isn't he on any of the lists?

According to Gary, any song that climbs to the top position "roars" there. How is a song that moved from 2-1 a "roar"?

Paul McCartney hands down is the most successful *artist/ songwriter* ever (group or solo..however you wanna define it)! He wrote or co-wrote at the min. every single one of his songs throughout every phase of his career (Beatles, Wings, or as a solo artist). W/ Diana Ross, even though she didnt write any Supreme songs (far as I know) she WAS The Supremes and the blatant star and heartbeat of the group. I strongly agree that Billboard should take those factors into consideration and possibly reconfigure (depending on the singer and circumstance) an artists total #1s. Yes, The Supremes ended up becoming 'The Supremes feat. Diana Ross' or visa versa I believe towards the end. If they were around today, it would be in solid concrete *Diana Ross* 'feat. the other two singers' lol and she'd have all those extra #1s included into her many solo #1s.

Although I don't care much for "Monster" it is undoubtedly the most popular song in the USA (I thought it was the most popular song last week, but that is besides the point). Not sure what the record is, but four weeks at #2 before going to #1 must be one of the longer waits in HOT100 history (I think Pitbull and LMFAO had longer waits). Outkast's "Hey Ya" blocked "The Way You Move" for something like 8 or 9 weeks before it moved to #1. I remember being so happy when TWYM finally moved up!

Because "Hey Ya" was Andre's song, so I was glad Big Boi got his #1 too lol Both are great though. :)

They had two #1s as Diana Ross & The Supremes, but I don't even think those two are usually added to Diana's total as a solo artist. Ultimately, like 2m said, you can use whatever kind of criteria you want. There are even supposed official Billboard book writers who disagree on the ways these types of records should be determined.

Rihanna also has a number one in every decade of this century so far ;)
If Rihanna is landing #1's still in 2019 then this might mean something
(Mariah had a #1 in every year during the 90's - I believe)

There you go, Billboard. They make a distinction.
Why doesn't Diana get credit for all of the Supremes #1s if Rihanna gets credit for singing less on some of these songs?

The problem is Rihanna was the draw to the song in most cases as she sings the hook.

The weird one for me is Joel Whitburn crediting George Michael with 10 #1s (he includes the three Wham! chart toppers in his tally) but not the Supremes with Diana Ross or the Jackson 5 with Michael. Now of course George Michael was almost single-handedly responsible for those Wham! songs (and was even credited as a solo act on "Careless Whisper" in most of the world) but Wham! was still a separate recording entity from George's solo career.
Oh, and as a technicality to the featuring debate above, I don't think Trey Lorenz was given credit on the Hot 100 for "I'll Be There." That's a Mariah solo.

Which means, using that criteria, Rihanna wouldn't receive credit for the hook on "All Of The Lights" (not that it was a #1 anyway).

I'd def. say slightly more than "nearly" of Mariah #1s were not solo lol. Like Rihanna, Mimi had at least 3 #1s (I can instantly think of) with other featured singers or groups (I'll Be There duet w/ Trey Lorenz, One Sweet Day duet w/ Boyz II Men, and Thank God I Found You feat. Joe and 98 Degrees) S None of the eighteen songs that are in Mariah's #1 column say "featuring Mariah Carey." Her two Rainbow #1's feature other artists and then she has "One Sweet Day" which is a duet with Boyz II Men. Mariah still has lead billing on all of her hits and is completely solo on fifteen of them. Rihanna has ten #1's as a lead artist. Her two Eminem #1's and "Live Your Life" are billed primarily to other artists. You can't compare THAT to Mariah while also completely ignoring that many of Rihanna's OWN #1's feature other artists (Jay-Z on "Umbrella," Drake on "What's My Name," Britney Spears on "S&M," Calvin Harris on "We Found Love.") That leaves a grant total of six #1's billed to "Rihanna" point blank. Of course I think it's ridiculous to say Rihanna only has six #1's, but that seems to be the theory you apply to Mariah.

"Diana Ross and the Supremes" was the name of the act, so that would be why they're not added to Ross' total. Same with "Sonny & Cher" tracks. As others have stated, there are different ways to look at things. As of late, I've been looking outside of Billboard and at sources like Cashbox for other No. 1s and such, to flesh things out.

But Diana Ross' name is listed on some of those Supremes #1s (i.e. as opposed to just "The Supremes") so how is that different than "Eminem & "Rihanna" where names are listed? I just think there is a lot of inconsistency. The "Careless Whisper" one is another example. At any rate, I think in the end most people have respect for an artist and their own music. Not only does a featured credit mean an artist likely doesn't sing on much of the song, but it also means that track wasn't about that artist's vision. Was Rihanna any part of the creation of some of these songs in terms of where they wanted to go with it, what it said, etc.? I don't know, I am asking. With songs where someone is a lead artist, they sing more, but also probably played a part in the direction of the music.

That's what I think about when I think about how Rihanna turned down "Timber". The song is a huge hit anyway. People say Rihanna is crucial to her rap hits, but is Rihanna crucial or is the song already a hit song (because the hook itself is crucial) and Rihanna just happened to be the one to jump on it and lay her vocals down? That's not a knock on Rihanna. She's still part of a huge hit song, but I don't really see it as Rihanna being the reason those songs were hits.

Let's hope The Monster gets at least a few more weeks. I don't see Say Something selling enough over Monster to make up the difference in Airplay. Don't see Timber outselling The Monster enough to make up the difference in Airplay. At least for a couple more weeks anyway.

Hey anyone know if Gaga's DWUW video is ever coming out? Kinda odd that she's waited five months to do a second video for this album...

Dunno, jeng. I think Billboard looks at it as a matter of regular recording teams, vs. one or two songs in which solo acts collaborate.

Renfield, i've been in contact with Joel Whitburn about the George Michael listing; he explained that like Miami Sound Machine morphing into Gloria Estefan, Wham! & GM are interchangeable in ways similar to Wings/ Paul Mc, but unlike Phil Collins & Genesis or solo MJ and the Jackson 5. Billboard disagrees and lists everyone solo.

But then Ryan Lewis doesn't have vocals on song by M&L, and Michael sang lead on most Jackson 5 songs (if not all of their hits). Does Joel give Diana credit for all of the Supremes' hits?

Nowadays, the way the music biz is, ANY key role one plays in a song almost assures they'll be included as a 'featuring artist' at the minimum. The difference (at least it seems to me) is that Mariah may have had a few #1's that were collaborations, but she was the main artist, or one of the main artists on each one of them. She was never a featuring on any of her #1's, while Rihanna has been a featuring on 3 of them now. And of course it goes without saying that the Beatles and Michael Jackson were the leads on all their #1's. I don't know, doesn't seem to me like Rihanna has completely earned the right to be in such elite company. JMO.
