First of all, I apologize for the lack of updates lately. I just haven't had any time over the past week and this week is pretty busy too. Hopefully by next week things will begin to die down.
Anyways, It's beginning to look a helluva lot more like Christmas, and Kelly Clarkson has taken over the top spot with her holiday classic in the making "Underneath the Tree." The song explodes 16-1 to give Kelly her 3rd #1 on the format. She has also hit #1 with "Breakaway" and "Stronger." Will she be Christmas queen?
AC wannabe Whitney Wolanin officially has her biggest AC hit as "Run Run Rudolph" explodes 21-5 on the chart. This is Whitney's first top 10 and top 5. Now if she could just do this with a non-Christmas song, I can easily take her off the wannabe list.
Mary J. Blige also has a 16 spot jump as her rendition of the song probably most famous by Donny Hathaway "This Christmas" leaps 24-8. This is Mary's first top 10 AC hit and she may have more to come in the next few weeks.
Johnny Mathis leaps 25-11 this week giving the classic crooner his biggest AC hit almost 30 years! "Sending You A Little Christmas" is Johnny's 23rd top 20 hit on a chart spanning 6 decades. His last top 20 hit was "Simple" which peaked at #6 back in July of 1984!
A double dose of Kelly cracks the top 20 as Blue Christmas (23-12) and Please Come Home For Christmas (30-13) both make huge leaps. Kelly now has 17 top 20 hits to her name. Can she get more?
Mary J. Blige has the highest debut of the week has her rendition of the "Sound of Music" song "My Favorite Things" clocks in at #16. Her rendition of "The First Noel" also has a debut this week at #26. Mary now has 4 top 30 hits to her name, 2 of them are in the top 20 currently.
Leaping in at #17 is a singer/songwriter whose claim to fame is... writing Christmas songs! Elizabeth Chan has always wanted to be a songwriter for holiday hits, and now she has one of those on the chart. "Fa La La" debuts at #17 giving Chan her first AC hit. Elizabeth is an example of "new friends" who come to the party over the holidays, while Johnny Mathis is part of the "oldies coming back home."
Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle has 2 of the 6 debuts this week. She comes in at #21 with her rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and at #23 with "I Believe in Father Christmas." Susan now has 4 AC hits to her name, all of them are Christmas songs. Her last hit was her rendition of "Do You Hear What I Hear" peaked at #20 for Christmas 2010.
The last debut that hasn't been mentioned yet brings the return of the rock band Heart. This song only has vocals from Nancy Wilson, but is also a duet with AC modern legend Richard Marx. "All Through the Night" which is NOT a Cyndi Lauper remake debuts at #22 this week. For Heart, this is their 10th AC hit. Their last hit was "Hey You" which peaked at #26 back in September 2010. For Richard, this is his 21st AC hit. Last year his rendition of "Little Drummer Boy" made it to #6.
Of the 6 droppers, 4 of them are recurrents. Whether of not they return in January will depend on where they land in the first post-Christmas chart. With Rihanna, both Bruno Mars songs, and Robin Thicke leaving, the only direct result new peak goes to Straight No Chaser. Also the new l,ongest running song now belong to Pink as "Just Give Me A Reason" has been on for 34 weeks.
