This was the first second single from her debut album "Complex Simplicity". It peaked at #87 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in early 2004.
I think this song was ahead of it's time and it wouldn't sound out of place if it were released this year or last year (due to the throwback sound starting to become popular again).

I thought the first single was "You'll Never Find (A Better Woman)". Wikipedia has this listed first, but Billboard says "You'll Never Find" peaked first. I love this. One of my favorites on that album, and it's one of my favorite R&B albums of the previous decade. I remember some critics comparing "Be Your Girl" to Cherrelle.

This album (and song) stays in rotation. Reminds me of my late teens/early 20s!

Gave this album my annual spin and this track is still perfect as ever. Her and Poli Paul were a MEAN team together. They gave Christina Milian her best tracks in "Dip It Low", which Teedra co-wrote and Poli produced, and "I'm Sorry", for which Poli produced. Classic style Hype Williams video. In the Top 5 of my favorite R&B tracks of the 2000s. Shame it never got the love it deserved when it was initially released but it got a small revitalization through the years by the vessel Kaytranada. He loves to bring back older and fan favorite R&B tracks into the current house dance scene.
