Anyways, Bionic is not a bad album that everyone was making it out to be back then. IIRC, RCA wanted her to record and push Not Myself Tonight as the first single at last minute as they thought the album wasn't commercial enough. (Can anybody confirm this?) It feels like the album lacks of strong first single material so I understand the decision but they should have given her a better song, if that's really what happened. And I still believe You Lost Me is one of her best songs ever. |

Indeed, NMT was a label decision because the album was a bit left field. You know with some unknown bitches like Sia or Nicki Minaj that were probably never gonna make it... wait... mmmm...
Anyway
NMT wasn’t lyrical genius (kissing all the boys and the girls) or sonically in (almost timbaland throwback) or fully cooked (chorus needed extra punch), but it wasn’t bar either. A key problem was that she was seen as a bitch, and media wanted to create a new diva feud where she was the mean one against Gaga. When her video had any resemblance to Gaga’s image she was done. I think the album is very solid. It has 3 amazing ballads and some interesting uptempos. Didn’t deserve to flop that bad considering the type of generic stuff that managed to succeed at that time

"Monday Morning" still slaps and should've been on the standard edition. And "Elastic Love" remains one of the most interesting productions she's done to date.
"Lift Me Up" and "You Lost Me" are exquisite. "I Am," "Birds of Prey," and "Little Dreamer" are great too. "Vanity" and "Bobblehead" are campy messes, but so fun and tongue-in-cheek.

Christina Aguilera’s “Accelerate” Was Ahead Of Its TimeChristina Aguilera ushered in the Liberation era with “Accelerate” on this day (May 3) in 2018. After a lengthy hiatus between albums (six years, to be exact), Xtina would have been forgiven for going with something safe and radio-friendly. Instead, she opted for a trap-pop concoction with two features, experimental production and an extended outro that sounds like a completely different song. It backfired commercially, peaking at number 24 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under Chart, but that doesn’t mean “Accelerate” is a bad song. In fact, I would argue that it’s one of late-career Christina’s most interesting singles. It’s certainly more ambitious than anything on Lotus or the steady stream of songs that filled the void between albums. Produced by Mike Dean, Che Pope and Kanye West, “Accelerate” is essentially a female empowerment anthem. “All my boss ladies, go get your Mercedes,” the 39-year-old sing/raps while Ty Dolla $ign sprinkles in some ad-libs. “No matter, long as you get there, just don’t let it drive you crazy.” “We got moola, power, we on fire tonight,” the Stripped icon promises. “Gonna get it how we want it, ’cause we ’bout it.” That takes us the genuinely catchy chorus, which is elevated by the comparatively jarring production that accompanies the verses. “Accelerate, c’mon babe, pick up your speed,” Christina belts. “Stamina, fill me up, that’s what I need.” 2 Chainz then adds a couple of words (calling it a feature is stretch), before the Oscar-robbed Burlesque actress takes us home with a doo-wop outro. In retrospect, “Accelerate” might have been a better buzz single. It would have signaled that Liberation had no intention of being a walk down memory lane, while still allowing something more palatable to be serviced to radio. Or maybe Christina had just reached the point in her career where charts and radio airplay were of little interest. I’d much rather she follow her muse and try new things than jump on the latest trend in the hope of landing a hit. That’s beneath a legend of her stature. Bionic, the album, didn’t do much for me; however, I just revisited it after reading this thread. :)
The songs I’d say I still enjoy are:
Bionic, Prima Donna, Sex For Breakfast, All I Need, You Lost Me (still sounds current).

Accelerate’s video is...truly one of the worst things I’ve ever seen her do in almost 20 years.
The song itself is sooo freaking catchy. SUCH a bop. Really deserved to do something.
Bionic is...okay. It didn’t deserve to be slammed, and absolutely a sexist media contributed to its demise.
But, there’s no way stuff on that album really connected with an at-large audience. It’s full of half-baked stuff that is too nervous to follow its instincts — that’s the lasting impression I get from the album as an entity.

I love the Bionic album the very moment it came out, and always thought it was extremely underrated. The booklet artwork looked amazing! Definitely my fave!
This is still my fave quote to this very day. 
"I can proudly say [Bionic] was ahead of its time, to be honest. It wasn't so commercialized. You had to really be a music lover, be a true fan of music and the love of being open to really appreciate that record. It's just a special piece in my body of work that will forever live on. The older the record gets the more people will come to appreciate it actually and check it out."
