The Christmas takeover is near its peak as the top 4 songs on the chart now belong to the season with Kelly Clarkson once again leading the charge for a 2nd week. Mary J Blige makes a nice 8-2 leap giving Mary her first top 5 AC hit. Just 20 spins behind her, Whitney Wolanin makes a jump into the top 3 and the legendary Johnny Mathis scores his first top 10 hit in 29 years!!! This is also now his first top 5 hit in 31 years! He last made the top 5 with "Friends in Love," a duet with Paulette back in 1982!
We can add 2 more top 10s to Kelly's name. "Blue Christmas" makes it to #7, while "Please Come Home For Christmas" is #8. She now has 11 top 10s total.
Elizabeth Chan has the final top 10 entry this week as "Fa La La" leaps 17-9. This is her first top 10.
In the top 20, we kick off with the week's highest debut. It's X Factor star that isn't One Direction. It's Leona Lewis! Her holiday original "One More Sleep" bows at #16 this week. This is Leona's 4th AC hit (her first in 3 years) and her 3rd top 20. Her last AC hit was the underrated "I See You" from Avatar, which peaked at #24 in 2010. Her last top 20 hit was "Better In Time" which peaked at #4 back in 2008.
Susan Boyle grabs a pair of top 20 hits this week with "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" (#17) and "I Believe in Father Christmas" (#20). Susan now has 4 top 20 hits to her name. She last charted over Christmas 2010 when "Do You Hear What I Hear" peaked at #17.
Moving 22-18 are Heart's Nancy Wilson and Richard Marx on "All Through the Night." For Heart, this is their 6th top 20 hit and their first in 19 years!! They last reached the top 20 back in 1994 when "Will You be There" peaked at #15!
Richard has had a little more top 20 experience. This is his 19th top 20 hit. He made the Christmas list last year when "Little Drummer Boy" peaked at #7.
At #19 is Indiana University graduates Straight No Chaser. The A Cappella group scores their 3rd top 20 hit with "Wonderful Christmastime" Their last top 20 was "The Christmas Can-Can" which peaked at #18 during Christmas 2009.
Debuting at #27 is the 6 member Irish vocal group Celtic Thunder. While they haven't had much "mainstream" success the group has a cult following, and has regularly had specials aired on PBS. A former member of the group is former Glee cast member and "Glee Project" winner Damian McGinty. Celtic Thunder's rendition of "Carol of the Bells" enters the chart at #27 giving the group their first AC hit.
The last debut of the week comes from the Goo Goo Dolls with their rendition of the Christmas song... wait, it's NOT a Christmas song. "Come to Me" is the 2nd single off their new album "Magnetic" and the song debuts at #29 this week. This is the Goo's 6th top 30 AC hit, and their first in 6 years! Their last appearance was "Let Love In" which peaked at #28 back in 2007.
Katy Perry gets another shot this week as "Unconditionally" returns at #30. Look for this to be big in 2014.
We had 3 recurrents this week; Pink, Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick. 2 Christmas songs get new peaks as a direct result. They are Mary J Blige's "My Favorite Things" and Susan Boyle's "I Believe in Father Christmas." With Pink leaving, Phillip Phillips now has the longest song on the chart at 33 weeks for "Gone Gone Gone."
