No Godney or Whitney?
What kind of garbage list is this? Madonna not #1? Taylor top 10? Katy ahead of Gaga? Are they not taking talent and overall impact into consideration?

This is just a fun list, not really one meant to be all definitive or the most well-regarded as we said before it even started. But there are a few hmmm spots.

I'm pleased, Whitney deserved #1; she was the best voice on the countdown. But madonna was the prettiest ;)

Not sayin these women should all necc. be on the list but they should before some that are. What about Joplin, Lennox, Grace Slick, Stevie Nix, Wilson Sisters, Joan Jett, and many more I'm forgetting. There are a ton in Country music. Fergie would also be on there if she had better taste in music
Some one mentioned Blondie, Gotta remember Debbie IS 68 years old

Okay, listen, I get that Britney's had a massive flop year, but it doesn't justify the fact that she didn't make the top 20, let alone the list. WTF?

Considering how cold it was out there, the fact that Debbie Harry tried to sing live was commendable. I did think she sounded quite bad compared to her usual. There are dozens of videos of her and Blondie performing on tour from this year where she sounded reasonably good though. They have a new album coming out this year. Not sayin these women should all necc. be on the list but they should before some that are. What about Joplin, Lennox, Grace Slick, Stevie Nix, Wilson Sisters, Joan Jett, and many more I'm forgetting. There are a ton in Country music. How odd to place Whitney above Aretha.
It was a fun countdown - great performances!

Seems legit to me. Beyonce higher than Madonna and mariah and just below Aretha Whitney and Tina.
Britney nowhere to be found.
Katy above GaGa
No Carrie or Kelly
Good fair list indeed.

jback's love of one particular force of nature leads him to believe the list is "legit." Obviously, it's lacking, without appearances of aforementioned acts like Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, etc. I would have aid it's because they didn't perform on a Dick Clark show, but for Adele, it showed a clip of the "Rolling in the Deep" video. Madge was No. 1 on that VH1 Greatest Women list, but that list was very flawed in many of its rankings. That one and this one would not be ones to look to for a serious list of women regarded as the greatest in music history. But, they're fun. I liked that it showed a clip of (very) early Cher, and not a more recent one.

It started out with so much hope seeing Karen Carpenter and Pat Benatar...then it was just a mess. Can we remove Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Adele, Beyonce and add some real legends....Stevie Nicks, Olivia Newton-John, Janis Joplin, Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt. How fitting Rihianna's video clip was all sorts of autotune! LOL. If this was a true list Madonna shoulda been #1. I would be ok with Whitney 2nd or 3rd.

I liked that it showed a clip of (very) early Cher, and not a more recent one. Agreed. These lists can't be taken seriously. I don't think twice about any list without Madonna at #1, much less one completely omitting Britney. I think an ideal top 5 would be: 5. Whitney 4. Mariah 3. Britney 2. Janet 1. Madonna A lot of the top 5 are really interchangeable IMO, except Madonna being at the top. With Beyoncé, Aretha, Joplin, Ross and Cher rounding out the top 10. And who can forget Babz! She could take a top ten spot from one of those. Gaga, Adele and Katy should all be featured in the top 20, but at this point in their careers could be pretty interchangeable. Is there a more legit list like this that's been put together? I think it would be a cool thing for Rolling Stone or Billboard to do.

Well, we can look at lists of greatest artists, and then pull out the women that way. Can do the same with rankings at the Acclaimed Music site. Of the top five you listed, Madonna probably would be the only one to appear on a more "legit" list.
VH1's initial 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll (which premiered in 1999) was decent- and that's probably because it surveyed females in the music industry, as well as other mediums. The recent one VH1 did looked to be done just by VH1, which is why it was lacking. VH1's 100 Greatest Artists list also surveyed artists (male and female) and, at least, was better than the recent female list.

^I think that obviously they wanted a big "singer" at #1 and I'm ok with that.

Yea. we did our partying Saturday night. Will the top 5 be comprised of Aretha, Madonna, Whitney, Beyoncé and Britney? Or will someone sneak in and spoil it for one of them? No Olivia.:( Boo - No Olivia. And, yet, Gloria Estefan gets THAT rank? Please. Olivia had far more impact and influence, not to mention many more big hits.

Not fond of the list. Especially with how high the likes of Katy, Taylor & Rihanna rank. Judy Garland/Patsy Cline/Barbra Streisand should have all made appearances on the list. Some mentioned were a nice surprise though.

VH1's 100 Greatest Artists list also surveyed artists (male and female) and, at least, was better than the recent female list. I suppose it's difficult because an effective list, in my opinion, will attempt to measure overall cultural impact - a factor which by its nature is difficult to measure. Is there any denying that Madonna is the greatest female artist of all time? Or that Mariah, Whitney and Janet absolutely owned the 90's and influenced a new generation of artists? Or that Britney did the same with the teen pop revolution and her ever evolving career? A list that takes those intangibles into account, along with sales and airplay, would be the most accurate representation of greatness.
