Quality- well, quality based on a consensus, anyhow- would play a big factor, certainly more than sales/airplay.
RE Olivia- who's most people, smiley? if anyone knows Grease, that's multiple songs right there. Perhaps young people may not be familiar with her, but, even though she doesn't get a lot of recurrent airplay, older folks sure will.

How are you actually going to put Katy Perry at #20 on that list? Huge barf. I like her, but the 20th most influential woman in music? That's a sad sign of mainstream talent.

^Again, this list really isn't mean to be such a thing- it was something fun for the show to do to help pass the time from 8 to 10 p.m.

Although it has been 30 years or so since her last big hit Including 'Physical' you find 5 number ones. Among the leaders for female solo acts at he time Some of the early number ones were also country hits

Puke. Yet another total sh*t bogus list lol. Beyond duh Madonna shouldve been #1 or #2 (at the min.) with Whitney being top 3 or #2 but not #1. What an insult where they placed her lol. That, along w/ Taylor fckin Swift at *number 9* :# That alone instantly made it a laughble god awful joke of a list. Yeah, Taylor is totally more of a legend and influential than Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, etc etc etc..LMAO

The list is doing its job. It is inviting discussion. I have never seen a list posted here that pleases everyone.

I don't understand this list. Was it supposed to be an all time thing or a current thing? Neither way makes the rankings make any sense.

Well, we can look at lists of greatest artists, and then pull out the women that way. Can do the same with rankings at the Acclaimed Music site. Of the top five you listed, Madonna probably would be the only one to appear on a more "legit" list. VH1's initial 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll (which premiered in 1999) was decent- and that's probably because it surveyed females in the music industry, as well as other mediums. The recent one VH1 did looked to be done just by VH1, which is why it was lacking. VH1's 100 Greatest Artists list also surveyed artists (male and female) and, at least, was better than the recent female list. I love that countdown. They interviewed actual people in the music industry - not reality stars who say things like "that was my SONG!" Tina's placement at #2 is on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsrK3Xz-MzI

Again most people only know "Physical" from Olivia.

While I'm glad to see Chaka Khan, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Deborah Harry, and some others on the list and all.. I can't help but to eye roll at Katy even being on the list to begin with. No Britney completely omitted from the list too? lol. um okay. I like Beyonce and all, but she doesn't quite supersede Madonna for a list like this lmao. Also, just kind of a general note but Patti Labelle always seems downplayed on these sort of lists/specials too. I still cringe at how Rolling Stone rated Christina above her on their vocalist ranking some time ago.

As HG said, Grease was a pretty big movie Olivia Newton John has even been on Glee Grease has been done on Glee as well Unless 'most' means a very specific set of people I think Olivia Nwwton John is more than a 'one hit wonder'

I do agree that, considering how huge she was in her time, it's interesting just how many of her songs are completely forgotten (outside of Grease and "Physical"-- the latter got a revival from Glee). I don't think most people under the age of 40 have any idea just how big she was in the 70s and early 80s.

I'm one of the few people I know who hated Grease and forget all about her until she gave Mariah a award back in the day one of many awards given and then came out and performed with Mariah Carey on tour. Olivia only mattered to me on those two occasions but then again im not a old person so i dont know much better.

I think Olivia is remembered most for Grease, "Physical" and perhaps "I Honestly Love You" (especially for those who lived through that time), and Xanadu is a stretch because of what a mess it was, but it was one of those pop culture moments in the way Showgirls and Glitter were. The soundtrack was successful though.

I love olivia (heart attack, anyone?) but I don't see her fitting in on this countdown. Neither would the epitome of diva vocals that is La Streisand. But there is absolutely nothing "rockin'" about Babs, though a more talented (and better selling in the US) singer probably just doesn't exist.
The list might have looked like this in a slightly more perfect world: 1. Madonna 2. Whitney 3. Janet 4. Mariah 5. Britney

As much as I love Mrs Jackson any list that ranks her over Mariah gets a eye roll. Legend yes but Mariah's contribution and legacy has and will hold up better, sorry.

Outside of Madonna, the Pulse community's favorite females (and, I suspect, many other forums, too) don't fare all that terrific on greatest lists, on the whole. On a related note, I think the Acclaimed Music site will do something to compensate for the male domination on greatest lists, though, which probably is welcome.
As for Olivia, she sure was big in her day- 15 top 10s on the Hot 100. And let's not forget that, while not new music, "The Grease Megamix" was a near-top 10 hit at pop radio in the mid-90s.
Olivia's one of my favorites, but I understand why she doesn't fare all that well on greatest lists.

Well, lists like this and the recent VH1 women list aren't truly serious ones, compared to some others. I enjoy lists for various reasons, sometimes to gain exposure to something I may have not been familiar with before. Lists serve a purpose of showing what people - who earn their living critiquing and writing about music- consider the greatest in this or that. That's what makes them "experts"- and those who don't earn their living doing such are free- and often do- disagree on some counts. But, that's good, as it inspires debate. I would have preferred that recent VH1 women list to survey artists/industry people, which past VH1 lists had done- that and that 50 Greatest Women of the Video Era were lazy, thrown-together lists done only by VH1 itself.

Beyonce #4! She was also #3 on the VH1 liste behind Madge and Mimi!! And the scary thing is her career is still going up. I suspect the next time she does it she will be #1.
(And yes I'm not being serious. All lists should be taken with a grain of salt. But it's still nice to see 32 year Yonka up there with the old fogies of music. And no Britney icing on the cake ;) ).

Did they say how they came up with the list?
I think we all know where Madonna ranks among females in pop music history but it's always nice when they switch things up and give her 2 or 3 or another top five position; keeps things interesting.
Whitney's legacy has been marred by her fall (I think about the drugs and decline before I think about her music) but there could be worse choices for number one.
As by far the most relevant female pop star of the 21st century--and a highly acclaimed one to boot--Beyonce is likely to continue placing high on these kinds of lists. And after her surprise release stunt, I suspect she'll be topping them like, by this year.

I thought this was a fun thing to watch, but I had absolutely no clue how in the world this list was made, because it made no sense whatsoever. Katy Perry is the 20th most important woman in music's history? I mean, I love her, but come on now. Whitney Houston is the most important one? Mmkay. I loved it when my friend was just like, "Well no fair, she's dead! She gets bonus points for that!" O. But anyway, it was a fun list to follow. And with a group of teens that really didn't care much for it, we kept on making guesses on who would be #1, so that was fun.

Boo - No Olivia. And, yet, Gloria Estefan gets THAT rank? Please. Olivia had far more impact and influence, not to mention many more big hits. Most people only know 1 song from Olivia.. Most people dont know anything from Gloria.

Not sayin these women should all necc. be on the list but they should before some that are. What about Joplin, Lennox, Grace Slick, Stevie Nix, Wilson Sisters, Joan Jett, and many more I'm forgetting. There are a ton in Country music. You only have two posts and I already love you.
