Anyone notice that Year End lists are more responsible for current hits declining than Christmas records?

Guess it's time to start predicting the top ten for 1/18/2014 (since sales and streaming tracking ended yesterday and there's just one radio update left tomorrow before the end of airplay tracking week):
1. Timber 2. The Monster (gonna be a very close race between the top two for sure!) 3. Counting Stars 4. Say Something 5. Royals 6. Demons 7. Let Her Go 8. Story of My Life 9. Roar 10. Dark Horse
Sadly it seems as though Wake Me Up will be gone :( but hopefully it will return 1/25/2014 in place of Roar...

Dark Horse will be the next no.1 after THE MONSTER or TIMBER maybe.... it's currently no.2 on iTunes behind timber... Combined with both versions Say Something is #2 on iTunes. We don't know the specific numbers for "Dark Horse"'s other version just below the top 100, but currently, the "Dark Horse" at #2 is far enough ahead that if we estimate the number for the second version of "Dark Horse" below the top 100, it should be at #2, behind "Timber," ahead of "Say Something," but "Dark Horse" and "Say Something" are close. You can see it here.

I think Dark Horse is going to rise higher than just one spot on the Hot 100.

I think Dark Horse is going to rise higher than just one spot on the Hot 100. it's still not in the top 20 on radio and it sort of lags behind on streaming at the moment (that will definitely change once/if the official music video comes out) so it won't go up more than 1 or 2 spots despite its reasonable gain in sales this week.

I just looked at the stats on YouTube for the official music videos of The Monster, Timber, and Counting Stars and it looks like this week Timber got about 9-9.5 million total views (a portion of that of course being US views) and the other two got about 8-8.5 million views so it looks like Timber has the streaming advantage over the other two, in addition to the sales advantage...guess it comes down to just how much it lags the other two on radio by during this week...Wrecking Ball has about 10-11 million so it seems like it might return for a 12th(?) week at #1 on streaming songs (depending on on-demand streaming as well of course, it's gonna be pretty close), but that won't be enough for it to return to the top 10 on the hot 100...also a significant decrease in total YoutTube streaming for Adore You (about the same number of views as TM and CS) so it will likely go down on the Hot 100 despite sales gains. Overall, I think the streaming and sales advantage for Timber will be enough for it to take the #1 spot this week on the Hot.

lags behind on streaming? lol. It's #6. We'll see.... that's not enough to make it rise or than 1 or 2 positions on the Hot 100...on Youtube it's far behind TM, CS, Timber, AY, WB and it has a significant disadvantage in radio from the first 3 of the aforementioned songs, Demons, Wake Me Up, and Royals which are all currently in the top ten (as of 1/11/2014).

At this point, does it look like "Counting Stars" will outpeak #3, "Say Something" will outpeak #4, or "Demons" will outpeak #6 on the Hot 100 if there are no performances or usage in the media in the near future?

1/18/14 prediction 1. Timber 2. The Monster 3. Counting Stars 4. Say Something 5. Royals 6. Demons 7. Let Her Go 8. Story of My Life 9. Wake Me Up 10. Dark horse 11. Roar 12-100: other songs I doubt Wake Me Up will be higher than either of Katy's songs, it is losing too much momentum and they are both higher if I'm not mistaken than Wake Me Up in sales and streaming I'll compare the 3 songs in stats Digital: dark horse will most likely get #4 Roar should get #9 Wake me up should get #11 Radio: Dark horse should be around #25 Roar should get #9 Wake me up should get #4 Streaming (last week): Dark horse: 16 (this number should go up) Roar: 11 Wake me up: 13 Between roar, dark horse, and wake me up will be very close, because wake me up has a big advantage in radio, roar is behind by a decent amount and dark horse is really far behind. however roar is ahead on streaming but not much, all 3 are close (I expect dark horse to go up) and roar is higher than wake me up in digital. however dark horse has a big advantage on digital. I wouldn't be surprised if roar, wake me up, or dark horse gets #9.

And now it's time once again for our weekly look back at the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 singles of exactly 55, 50, 45, and 40 years ago this week.
January 12, 1959 (for week ending January 18, 1959)
TW LW WK 01 01 07 The Chipmunk Song - The Chipmunks with David Seville (4 weeks at #1) 02 02 09 Smoke Gets In Your Eyes - The Platters 03 06 06 My Happiness - Connie Francis 04 09 08 Gotta Travel On - Billy Grammer 05 03 17 To Know Him, Is To Love Him - The Teddy Bears 06 10 09 Whole Lotta Loving - Fats Domino 07 08 14 A Lover's Question - Clyde McPhatter 08 05 10 One Night - Elvis Presley 09 04 10 Problems - The Everly Brothers 10 11 13 Lonesome Town - Ricky Nelson
January 18, 1964 is one of the most significant chart dates in Hot 100 history. Not because of anything to do with the current #1 song, "There! I've Said It Again" by Bobby Vinton, but because that was the week that the Beatles first debuted at #45 on the Hot 100 with "I Want To Hold Your Hand".
Throughtout January there began to be rumors and stirrings about an English group with a sound not quite like anything anybody had ever heard before. Supposedly they were coming over in February and would appear on the popular Ed Sullivan Show. A promotional campaign by Capitol records proclaimed "The Beatles are coming!" to anybody who cared to listen. America, still reeling from the recent Kennedy assassination, didn't quite know it yet, but it was about to succumb to Beatlemania.

I doubt Wake Me Up will be higher than either of Katy's songs, it is losing too much momentum and they are both higher if I'm not mistaken than Wake Me Up in sales and streaming I'll compare the 3 songs in stats Digital: dark horse will most likely get #4 Roar should get #9 Wake me up should get #11 Radio: Dark horse should be around #25 Roar should get #9 Wake me up should get #4 Streaming (last week): Dark horse: 16 (this number should go up) Roar: 11 Wake me up: 13 Between roar, dark horse, and wake me up will be very close, because wake me up has a big advantage in radio, roar is behind by a decent amount and dark horse is really far behind. however roar is ahead on streaming but not much, all 3 are close (I expect dark horse to go up) and roar is higher than wake me up in digital. however dark horse has a big advantage on digital. I wouldn't be surprised if roar, wake me up, or dark horse gets #9. I feel like since last week was gift card redemption and all top 10 sales were above 200k if I'm not mistaken, sales will have a pretty big impact this week too so I think it will be DH at #9, Roar at #10 and WMU at #11, I could be wrong though

At this point, does it look like "Counting Stars" will outpeak #3, "Say Something" will outpeak #4, or "Demons" will outpeak #6 on the Hot 100 if there are no performances or usage in the media in the near future? Counting stars will reach the top 2 (hopefully even #1), Say Something probably won't get higher than #4, and Demons has a chance to get to #5 if Royals drops fast enough and gets out of the top 5.

Not as high as last week though. But it will have a big impact. I'd say Roar is maybe about 5,000-10,000 copies ahead of wake me up.
