www.billboard.com/articles/news/5869748/frozen-chills-for-second-week-at-no-1-on-billboard-200'Frozen' Chills For Second Week At No. 1 On Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield, L.A. | January 15, 2014 'Beyonce' holds at No. 2, while Kid Ink scores the week's top album debut. The soundtrack to Disney's "Frozen" holds for a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while Beyonce's self-titled album is also stationary, at No. 2. "Frozen" sold another 86,000 copies in the week ending Jan. 12, according to Nielsen SoundScan, down 48% from its 165,000 haul the previous week. (That sum was bolstered by sale pricing in the iTunes Store—an assist that wasn’t provided in the most recent tracking week.) As previously noted, it was initially forecast last week that "Beyonce" would likely return to No. 1 this week. However, "Frozen" bested its sales projections, selling about 5,000 to 10,000 more than expected. The forecast for “Beyonce” was around 90,000 last Wednesday (Jan. 8), but was then scaled back to 80,000 by the weekend. "Beyonce" finishes the week at No. 2 with 79,000 (down 40% from 130,000 a week ago). Sources credit the continued success of "Frozen" not to a breakout radio hit or special sale pricing, but to its parent film, which continues to do blockbuster business in theaters. According to Box Office Mojo, "Frozen" has earned $318 million at the U.S. and Canadian box offices through Jan. 13. It finished at No. 2 at the box office during the weekend ($15.1 million), behind the new release "Lone Survivor" ($38.5 million). Since "Frozen” received a wide release on Nov. 27, 2013, the movie has been among the top three filmsevery weekend at the box office. It’s currently the fourth-highest-grossing film released in 2013, behind "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "Iron Man 3" and "Despicable Me 2." With "Frozen" having sold 86,000, this is the first week the top-selling album in the country sold fewer than 100,000 copies since the chart dated Sept. 28, 2013, when Keith Urban's "Fuse" bowed at No. 1 with 98,000. The rule of “Frozen” this week is the smallest sum at No. 1 since J. Cole's "Born Sinner" rose to No. 1 on the July 20, 2013, chart, with just 58,000. It's fairly normal to see low sales figures at the top of the chart in January, because few major new albums arrive to market and the industry is readjusting after a busy holiday shopping season. That said, "Frozen" is the first theatrical film soundtrack to rule at No. 1 for multiple weeks since "Dreamgirls" spent two weeks at No. 1 in early 2007. The last animated film to spend more than one week at No. 1 was Disney's "The Lion King," which roared for 10 nonconsecutive weeks in 1994 and 1995. So far, the multiartist "Frozen" soundtrack has sold 589,000 in seven weeks, while "Beyonce" has sold 1.5 million in five weeks. After "Frozen" and "Beyonce" comes the first—and only—debut in the top 10 of the chart, Kid Ink's "My Own Lane" at No. 3. It's the rapper first full-length album for a major label (RCA Records) and it starts with 50,000. It also arrives at No. 1 on the Rap Albums chart. As for the rest of the top 10: Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" falls 3-4 with 36,000 (down 35%), Lorde's "Pure Heroine" is steady at No. 5 with 33,000 (down 28%), and One Direction's "Midnight Memories" holds at No. 6 with 24,000 (down 46%). Katy Perry's "PRISM" slides 4-7 with 23,000 (down 55%), Miley Cyrus' "Bangerz" jumps 13-8 with 20,000 (down 34%), and Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions" rises 10-9 with 17,000. R. Kelly's "Black Panties" rounds out the top 10, up one slot to No. 10, selling slightly more than 17,000. Like "Frozen" at No. 1, the sales sum for the No. 10 album is notably low this week. But, it's smaller than usual. "Black Panties" logs the third-smallest sum ever for the week's No. 10 album since SoundScan started powering the chart in 1991. (Only two weeks in early 2012 registered smaller sales at No. 10, but both weeks' sales came in at about 17,000 after rounding.) Over on the Digital Songs chart, Katy Perry trots up three slots to No. 1 with "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J, selling 243,000 downloads for the week (up 6%). The single, which is the third release from her "PRISM" album, is making great gains at radio. This week, it climbs 15-11 on the Pop Songs airplay chart (known as Mainstream Top 40 on Billboard.biz). Perry's previous single, the ballad "Unconditionally," topped out at No. 15 on the Digital Songs chart. Last week's leader, Pitbull's "Timber," featuring Ke$ha, drops to No. 2 with 227,000 (down 25%). A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera's "Say Something" falls 2-3 with 218,000 (down 10%). OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" slips 3-4 with 185,000 (down 22%). Eminem's "The Monster," featuring Rihanna, is stationary at No. 5 with 162,000 (down 27%). Passenger's "Let Her Go" is also a non-mover at No. 6 with 146,000 (down 21%). Aloe Blacc's "The Man" re-enters the chart at No. 7 with 139,000 (up 191%) thanks to the song's use in TV commercials for Beats by Dre. The spots, which have been airing since November, have recently earned huge exposure during the NFL playoffs. The first Beats commercial with "The Man" featured basketball player Kevin Garnett. Then, a second clip, starring San Francisco 49ers' quarterback Colin Kaepernick, began running in December. The latter spot was widely seen during the 49ers' Jan. 12 gameagainst the Carolina Panthers, and is the catalyst for "The Man's" sales gain this week. Lorde's "Team" hits the top 10 for the first time, rising 13-8 with 125,000 (up 6%), and Bastille's"Pompeii" also reaches the top 10, rising 14-9 with 124,000 (up 9%). Idina Menzel, who voices one of the lead characters in Disney's "Frozen" film, hits a new high, as her version of the movie's "Let It Go" climbs 12-10 with 118,000 (down 9%). Another rendition of the song, by Demi Lovato, slides 25-36 with54,000 (down 31%). Menzel's performance of the song is the one featured in the movie, while Lovato's take plays over the film's closing credits. Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Jan. 12) totaled 4.3 million units, down 21% compared with the sum last week (5.4 million) and down 17% compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5.1 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 9.7 million, down 15% compared with the same total at this point last year (11.4 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 25.6 million downloads, down 16% compared with last week (30.6million) and down 11% stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (28.8 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 56.2 million, down 11% compared with the same total at this point last year (63.4 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2012 when: A$AP Rocky's "Long.Live.A$AP" debuted at No. 1 with 139,000 and the "Kidz Bop 23" album started at No. 2 with 81,000.

(I replaced the typo of 2010, where it discusses the record sales weeks in the SS era, with 2000).
U.S. Album Sales Volume Falls to New Low By Keith Caulfield, New York | January 15, 2014
U.S. album sales have again fallen to a new weekly low.
In the week ending Jan. 12, 4.25 million albums were sold according to Nielsen SoundScan, which began tracking music sales in 1991.
The previous SoundScan-era low was set in the week ending Oct. 27, 2013, when just 4.49 million albums were sold.
To compare, the SoundScan-era high for album sales in a single week came in late December of 2000, during the height of CD sales, when 45.4 million albums were sold in the week ending Dec. 24. (To put that figure in perspective, in all of 2013, there were 289.41 million albums sold. But in 2000, there were 785.14 million albums sold.)
It's normal to see soft sales figures in January every year -- as the market adjusts back to normal after the Christmas shopping season, and because there are few new major albums to drive sales. This week's top selling album, for example, is the "Frozen" soundtrack, with 86,000 sold.
While it's now common for album sales to fall below 5 million units in a week, this wasn't always the case.
Weekly volume didn't fall below 5 million in the SoundScan era until 2010, when, in the week ending May 30, album sales dropped to 4.98 million.
In 2010, there were a total of four weeks with under 5 million in sales. In 2011, that number shrunk to just two weeks, but then stepped back up to three weeks in 2012.
In 2013, things got really crazy, when there were 18 weeks where album sales dropped below 5 million.
With this week's sum about 250,000 units away from scraping 4 million, it would seem another low threshold is about to be reached.

These articles need to note that streaming is driving the sales decline not fewer people buying music. The physical format has been on the decline for many years now and it's just now starting to hit digital sales. Billboard needs to come up with a way to incorporate streaming albums into the chart because people are consuming more music today than in 2000.

Exactly. Although aren't digital albums still increasing (although not by much)? (I know tracks are on the decline)

music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/chart-watch-frozen-brings-heat-203806438.htmlChart Watch: “Frozen” Brings The Heat By Paul Grein Yahoo Music "Frozen" tops The Billboard 200 for the second straight week. It's the first soundtrack to spend two weeks on top since "Dreamgirls" in 2007. It's the first soundtrack to an animated movie to spend two or more weeks on top since "The Lion King" roared for 10 weeks in 1994-1995. "Frozen" is #1 on Top Soundtracks for the seventh week. The movie has ranked in the top three at the box-office for seven straight weekends. "Frozen" sold 55K digital copies this week, which also puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums for the second week. Beyonce's "Beyonce" holds at #2 for the second week. The album tops 1.5 million in sales in this, its fifth week. That is by the fastest that a Beyonce album has reached 1.5 million. Her 2003 solo debut, "Dangerously In Love," took 13 weeks to hit 1.5M. 2006's "B'Day" took 14 weeks. 2008's "I Am…Sasha Fierce" took seven weeks. 2011's "4" has yet to sell 1.5M (It's up to 1,389,000.) Kid Ink's "My Own Lane" debuts at #3. It's the rapper's second full-length album. His first, "Up & Away," reached #20 in 2012. Kid Ink is the third artist whose name begins with the word "Kid" to chart as high as #3. He follows Kid Cudi and Kid Rock. Kid Ink's current single, "Show Me" (featuring Chris Brown) jumped into the top 40 on last week's Hot 100. Lorde's "Pure Heroine" holds at #5 for the second week. The album tops the 500K mark in digital sales this week. It has sold 766K copies overall. Miley Cyrus' "Bangerz" rebounds from #13 to #8. The album has sold 806K copies. (By way of comparison, Cyrus' previous album, "Can't Be Tamed," has sold just 350K copies.) "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J jumps to #1 on Hot Digital Songs (243K), displacing "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha (227K). Will "Dark Horse" zoom from #6 to #1 on the Hot 100 or will "Timber" hold on for a second week? You'll find out later today when we post my Songs blog. Here's a recap of this week's top 10 albums. The Top Five: The "Frozen" soundtrack holds at #1 for the second week in its seventh week (86K). This is its fifth week in the top 10… Beyonce's "Beyonce" holds at #2 for the second week in its fifth week (79K). It has been in the top five the entire time… Kid Ink's "My Own Lane" debuts at #3 (50K). It's his first top 10 album…Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" dips from #3 to #4 in its 10th week (36K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time…Lorde's "Pure Heroine" holds at #5 for the second week in its 15th week (33K). This is its 10th week in the top 10. The Second Five: One Direction's "Midnight Memories" holds at #6 for the second week in its seventh week (24K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time… Katy Perry's "Prism" drops from #4 to #7 in its 12th week (23K). This is its 11th week in the top 10…Miley Cyrus' "Bangerz" rebounds from #13 to #8 in its 14th week (20K). This is its seventh week in the top 10… Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions" inches up from #10 to #9 in its 71st week (17K). This is its 22nd week in the top 10…R. Kelly's "Black Panties" rebounds from #11 to #10 in its fifth week (17K). This is its second week in the top 10. Three albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Luke Bryan's "Crash My Party" drops from #7 to #13. OneRepublic's "Native" drops from #8 to #17. "Now 48" drops from #9 to #15. Florida Georgia Line's "Here's To The Good Times" rebounds from #16 to #12 in its 58th week. The album returns to #1 on Top Country Albums, displacing Luke Bryan's "Crash My Party." This is its ninth week on top of that chart. That's the longest run by any album since Taylor Swift's "Red" had 16 weeks on top in 2012-2013. It's the longest run by a debut album since "Taylor Swift" had 24 weeks on top in 2007-2008. It's the longest run at #1 for an album by an ongoing duo in chart history. (One collabo had a longer run on top: Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson's "Waylon & Willie," which stayed on top for 11 weeks in 1978.) The "Inside Llewyn Davis" soundtrack jumps from #23 to #14 in its fifth week. It's the second soundtrack to a film written by Joel & Ethan Coen to crack the top 20. "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" spent 55 weeks in the top 20 in 2001-2002 (including two weeks at #1 after it won the Grammy for Album of the Year. "Foreverly" by Billie Joe Armstrong + Norah Jones jumps from #33 to #19 in its seventh week, two weeks after the death of Phil Everly. The Everly Brothers had three top 20 albums from 1958 to 1960. John Newman's "Tribute" debuts at #24. The album hit #1 on The U.K.'s Official Albums Chart in September. It features "Love Me Again," which hit #1 on The U.K.'s Official Singles Chart in July. Ozzy Osbourne/Randy Rhoads reached the top 10 in 1987 with an album titled "Tribute." It was a tribute to Rhoads, a guitarist who had died in a plane crash in 1982. "Pitch Perfect" drops from #52 to #56 in its 64th chart week. It this week surpasses "Twilight" to become the best-selling soundtrack in digital history. Both albums have sold 739K digital copies, when rounded off to the nearest thousand. These are the only movie or TV soundtracks that are listed on Nielsen SoundScan's running list of the 100 best-selling albums in digital history (though "Frozen" may well crack the list next week, and certainly will within two weeks). "Twilight" has sold more copies overall (combining CDs and digital copies). It has sold 2,802,000 total copies, compared to 1,017,000 copies for "Pitch Perfect." CDs account for 73% of the sales of "Twilight" (with digital accounting for 26% and LPs accounting for a sliver). The breakdown is reversed with "Pitch Perfect." CDs account for just 27% of its sales (with digital accounting for the other 73%). Adele's "21" rebounds from #71 to #58 in its 151st week. The album moves up to #1 on Top Catalog Albums (in its sixth week on that chart). Adele's previous album, "19," logged 41 weeks at #1 on the catalog chart in 2011-2012. "21" has sold 10,857,000 copies. Ellie Goulding's "Halcyon" rebounds from #107 to #74 in its 55th chart week. The album logs its second week at #1 on The U.K.'s Official Albums Chart. This surpasses Goulding's first album, "Lights," which spent one week at #1 in the U.K. Eric Clapton's "Crossroads Guitar Festival" logs its fourth week at #1 on Top Music Videos. Coming Attractions: Bruce Springsteen "High Hopes" will be among next week's top new entries. Also due: Kidz Bop Kids' "Kidz Bop 25," Jennifer Nettles' "That Girl," Broken Bells' "After The Disco," Switchfoot's "Fading West," Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings' "Give The People What They Want," Mary Chapin Carpenter's "Songs From The Movie," Rosanne Cash's "The River & The Thread" and Jon Pardi's "Write You A Song."

Vinyl is likely still on the rise. Digital albums are likely still up. Cassettes might even be increasing.
Stand alone CD's must be seeing a more dramatic drop that the post indicates.

Chart Moves: 'Pitch Perfect' Hits 1 Million in Sales, John Newman's Album Debuts in Top 30 and American Authors 'Day' Dawns
By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | January 19, 2014
As usual, there were a number of movers and shakers outside of the top two positions on the chart this week. Let's take a look at some of them...
-- Billie Joe & Norah, "Foreverly" (No. 19): Billie Joe Armonstrong and Norah Jones' tribute set -- covering the Everly Brothers' 1958 album "Songs Our Daddy Taught Us" -- rises to its highest chart position yet, climbing 33-19 with 12,000 (up 10%). The ascension comes shortly after the death of the Everly Brothers' Phil Everly on January 3.
-- Arctic Monkeys, "AM" (No. 23): The band is flirting with its first No. 1 on the Alternative airplay chart, where the album's "Do I Wanna Know?" rises 3-2 after spending six weeks stuck at No. 3. The new album has sold 197,000 -- far more than the 92,000 sold of their last set, 2011's "Suck It And See."
-- John Newman, "Tribute" (No. 24): The singer's soulful single "Love Me Again" continues to rise on the Mainstream Top 40 chart, climbing 20-18 this week with a 13% in detections, according to Nielsen BDS. Meanwhile, on the Billboard 200, the British artist's first album enters at No. 24 with 10,000 sold.
-- Soundtrack, "Pitch Perfect" (No. 56): In the final week of December, the soundtrack reached 1 million in sales. It's the first million-selling theatrical film soundtrack since "Michael Jackson's This Is It" moved a million in December of 2009. Related
-- Demi Lovato, "Demi" (No. 126): While the album's single "Neon Lights" brightens up the Mainstream Top 40 chart (moving up 30-24 this week), the album dips 66-126 with a 53% decline in sales. However, it is selling faster than her last release. In "Demi's" first 35 weeks on sale, it has sold 334,000 copies -- more than what 2011's "Unbroken" did in its first 35 frames (310,000).
-- Colton Dixon, "A Messenger" (No. 132): Colton Dixon re-enters the chart (up 389%) for the first time since May of 2013, thanks to sales of this album at venues along the Winter Jam Tour 2014. Other acts on the trek profit from the tour, like Lecrae (No. 101; up 28%) and newsboys (with two titles on the chart seeing big gains: Nos. 166 and 185; up more than 100% each).
-- American Authors, "American Authors" (EP) (No. 174): As the album's oft-heard-in-TV-commercials single "Best Day of My Life" starts to take off on pop radio (rising 36-33 on Mainstream Top 40 this week), the set makes a belated debut on the Billboard 200 -- 20 weeks after it was released.

'Frozen' - The No. 1 Album That's Been Ignored by Radio News /
By Keith Caulfield | January 20, 2014 4:42 PM EST
'Frozen' - The No. 1 Album That's Been Ignored by Radio Despite how Walt Disney Records' "Frozen" soundtrack has been atop the Billboard 200 chart for two weeks -- and the movie is a blockbuster hit at the box office -- radio has essentially ignored the film's music. Its songs are no where to be found on Billboard's airplay charts, which monitor the most-played tunes on radio stations across the U.S.
That's partly owed to how none of the album's songs were promoted to radio outlets until two weeks ago, when Idina Menzel's version of the film's "Let It Go" -- the album's best-selling song with 606,000 downloads sold according to Nielsen SoundScan -- was officially serviced to adult contemporary radio stations by Disney.
In the week ending Jan. 19, just six radio stations had played the song according to Nielsen BDS. (Those six stations combined for a total of just 21 plays.) Demi Lovato's version of the song, which plays over "Frozen's" end credits, garnered play at three outlets.
(Radio Disney -- not included in the previous station counts -- of course is supporting the album. In the week ending Jan. 19, Lovato's "Let It Go" was the network's ninth-most played song, with 53 spins.)
Menzel's "Let It Go" is bubbling under the threshold of the Adult Contemporary airplay chart this week, with 28 plays from four reporting stations. It's about 60 spins away from debuting on the list. It's worth noting that adult contemporary stations are generally slow to play new songs -- even for singles by the format's biggest acts.
While the songs of "Frozen" aren't garnering much airplay, they are still significant hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, thanks to strong sales and streaming numbers. (The Hot 100 blends airplay, sales and streams to tally the most popular songs of the week.) Last week, four of the soundtrack's songs were on the Hot 100 -- led by Menzel's "Let It Go" -- at Nos. 25, 52, 60 and 65.
In addition, on our Streaming Songs chart last week -- which monitors play from outlets like YouTube -- Lovato and Menzel were at Nos. 31 and 32 with their respective versions of "Let It Go."
"Frozen" isn't the first album to hit No. 1 without the support of a radio airplay chart hit of course. Last year, of the 43 albums that hit No. 1 for the first time, six of them did so without previously charting a song on an airplay chart. Those were Beyonce's surprise-release self-titled set, Garth Brooks' "Blame It All On My Roots: Five Decades of Influences," Kanye West's "Yeezus," Luke Bryan's "Spring Break… Here to Party," Justin Bieber's "Believe Acoustic" and the "Les Miserables" soundtrack.
All of those albums were either specialty releases or titles with a unique promotional rollout that hindered their fortunes at radio. Of them, only two never charted a later airplay hit: Bieber and "Les Mis."
Beyonce's album, of course, arrived to market without any fanfare or a lead single -- so there was no opportunity for anything to chart before the album debuted. (It has since charted hits like "XO" and "Drunk In Love.") Brooks' effort was an independently-released, Walmart-exclusive, six-CD box set of mostly covers (so already, it's a super-unusual release). It did chart one entry on the Hot Country Airplay chart: "The Call," with Trisha Yearwood, which debuted on Dec. 28 (a week after the box hit No. 1).
"Yeezus" came to market without an official radio single or music video while Bryan's "Spring" album was essentially a compilation of previously-released songs. Both "Yeezus" and "Spring Break" eventually charted very minor airplay chart entries. Finally, Bieber's set was alternate takes of songs from his "Believe" album, like "As Long As You Love Me" and "Beauty and a Beat." The latter, in its original form, was a then-current hit on the Mainstream Top 40 chart when the "Believe: Acoustic" album hit No. 1.
Finally, the "Les Miserables" soundtrack, like "Frozen," headed to No. 1 off the strength of the musical film's popularity -- not from any hit singles on the radio.
