www.billboard.com/articles/news/5877848/bruce-springsteen-high-hopes-11th-no-1-album-billboard-200-chartBruce Springsteen Scores 11th No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | January 22, 2014 Bruce Springsteen earns his 11th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 this week with the arrival of "High Hopes." The set, which Columbia Records released Jan. 14, sold 99,000 copies through the week ending Jan. 19, according to Nielsen SoundScan. With the No. 1 debut, Springsteen pulls ahead of Elvis Presley to stand alone as the act with the third-most No. 1s in the history of the Billboard 200. Ahead of both acts on the all-time list are the Beatles (with 19 No. 1s) and Jay Z (with 13). Springsteen's first No. 1 album was "The River," released in 1980. He has since followed it up with chart-toppers through the '80s, '90s, '00s and '10s. Having already claimed a No. 1 in the 2010s (2012's "Wrecking Ball"), Springsteen remains the only act to have achieved No. 1 albums in each of the last four decades. "High Hopes" is Springsteen's first studio album (released since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking data in 1991) to debut with fewer than 100,000 copies. His SoundScan-era high came when 2002's "The Rising" powered through 525,000 copies in its first week, easily debuting at No. 1. "High Hopes" sold particularly strong with Internet retailers, thanks largely to Amazon.com. The company carried an exclusive CD/DVD version of the album, with the DVD sporting a full-length concert of Springsteen and his E Street Band performing the entire "Born in the U.S.A." album. Through Internet sellers, the physical version of "High Hopes" sold nearly 37,000 copies for the week -- the largest week for an album sold via the Internet since last May. Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" was the last biggest seller through the 'net, when it shifted 38,000 in its debut frame. That sum was largely due to Web-based orders of the vinyl LP version of the album. The vinyl set accounted for 12,000 of that 38,000 Internet total. (As for the vinyl version of "High Hopes," it sold a little more than 2,000 copies in its first week.) In total, "High Hopes" sold 74,000 physical copies last week, easily making it the week's top-selling physical album. On the digital side of things, "High Hopes" sold 26,000 downloads, the fourth-largest-selling digital album of the week. Last week's Billboard 200 No. 1, the soundtrack to Disney's "Frozen," slips to No. 2 to with 87,000 (though it's up 2% in sales). The album is in its eighth week on the list, and has spent the past three weeks locked in one of the top two rungs. In turn,it's the first soundtrack to spend three weeks in the top two since May 2009, when "Hannah Montana: The Movie" spent seven nonconsecutive frames in the region. The long-running "Kidz Bop" series collects its 18th top 10 album, as "Kidz Bop 25" bows at No. 3 with 65,000. The franchise, which features kid-friendly covers of popular songs, collects its 39th charting album in total with the arrival of "Kidz Bop 25." In addition to the 25 numbered albums, the "Kidz Bop" franchise has spawned themed collections like "Kidz Bop Christmas," "Kidz Bop Sings the Beatles" and "Kidz Bop Halloween Hits!" On our Kid Albums chart, which tracks the top-selling children’s albums of the week, "Kidz Bop 25" easily debuts at No. 1. It marks the 27th No. 1 on the chart for the "Kidz." The last numbered "Kidz" album, "Kidz Bop 24," arrived at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 last year (and No. 1 on Kid Albums) with 62,000 sold in its first week. Behind "Kidz" this week is Beyonce's self-titled album, which falls 2-4 with 61,000. Two more new entries arrive in the top 10: Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles with her solo debut, "That Girl," and rock band Switchfoot with "Fading West." The former starts at No. 5 with 54,000, while Switchfoot steps in at No. 6 with 39,000. As one-half of Sugarland (with singer/guitarist Kristian Bush), Nettles racked up six earlier albums on the Billboard 200, with three of them hitting No. 1. The pair topped the list with "Love on the Inside" in 2008, the live set "Live on the Inside" the following year and then "The Incredible Machine" in 2010. Collectively, Sugarland's albums have sold 9.9 million copies in the United States, according to SoundScan. Meanwhile, Switchfoot garners its third top 10 album on the Billboard 200 with "Fading West." It's the act's highest-charting set since 2005's "Nothing Is Sound" debuted and peaked at No. 5. "Fading West" also gives the act its fifth No. 1 on the Christian Albums chart, following "Vice Verses," "Oh! Gravity," "Nothing Is Sound" and "The Beautiful Letdown." Lorde's "Pure Heroine" is up next on the Billboard 200 this week, dipping two slots to No. 7 with 31,000. Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" falls four rungs to No. 8 with 29,000 (down 19%), and Katy Perry's "PRISM" descends 7-9 with 22,000 (down 2%). Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions" rounds out the top 10, falling one spot to No. 10 with 20,000 (though it's up by 17%). Over on the Digital Songs chart, Perry's "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J, remains at No. 1 with 261,000 downloads sold (up 7%). Meanwhile, a Great Big World & Christina Aguilera's "Say Something" rises one spot to No. 2 with 208,000 (down 4%). Pitbull's "Timber,"featuring Ke$ha, drops 2-3 with 202,000 (down 11%), and Aloe Blacc's "The Man" rises 7-4 with 165,000 (up 19%). OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" descends 4-5 with 156,000 (down 15%) while Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty," featuring 2 Chainz, flies 18-6 with 148,000 (up 84%). Eminem's "The Monster," featuring Rihanna, slides 5-7 with 136,000 (down 16%), Lorde's "Team" is stationary at No. 8 with 133,000 (up 7%), and Passenger's "Let Her Go" falls 6-9 with 130,000 (down 12%). Bastille's "Pompeii" closes out the top 10, falling one spot to No. 10, with 129,000 (up 4%). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Jan. 19) totaled 4.4 million units, up 4% compared with the sum last week (4.3 million) and down 11% compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 14.1 million, down 14% compared with the same total at this point last year (16.3 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 24.1 million downloads, down 6% compared with last week (25.6 million) and down 13% stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (27.8 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 80.3 million, down 12% compared with the same total at this point last year (91.2 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: Gary Allan's "Set You Free" debuted at No. 1 with 106,000 and the Lumineers' self-titled album jumped 7-2 with 50,000 (up 31%).

Springsteen's only #1 in the 90s was a two week stay for his Greatest Hits package. He lucked out there.
Madonna was not as lucky, scoring four #2 albums (five including Evita) in the 90s, despite every studio album since 2000 debuting at #1.

Madonna def. should be at 10 #1 albums w/ The Immaculate Collection and Ray Of Light being the two others that clearly had the sales and quality of #1 albums. Was a classic case of reeally bad timing the weeks they were released. The albums that blocked her were by the biggest acts or soundtrack and movie of the year (as ROL came out during the peak of Titanic, the 2nd biggest movie of all time :#). Evita, Im Breathless and Erotica I could kind of understand (even though I think Erotica only lost out cause of freakin Wal-Mart). If it didnt have a warning label on it, she would've also gotten to #1 even w/ the backlash. Overall, due to fcked up circumstances, she should be at #11 lol

Yah, Madge had two No. 2 albums in the 90s. She and Babs have the most top 2 albums among females (13 each).
Not to be nitpicker, but... the list of most No. 1s includes albums that hit No. 1 on pre-top-200 albums charts- i.e. Elvis. The albums chart became a top 200 one in the late 60s. I believe Billboard includes those in hit-albums counts=- which is opposite of what it does with pre-Hot 100 charts and hit-singles counts.

Cherilyn's album re-enters all the way up at 36- those redemptions are being reported/coming in at an odd pace.
And, the Duck Dynasty holiday album re-entered.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/chart-watch-bruce-tops-elvis-sales-sag-195251588.htmlChart Watch: Bruce Tops Elvis, But Sales Sag By Paul Grein, Yahoo Music Bruce Springsteen's "High Hopes" enters The Billboard 200 at #1 this week. It's The Boss' 11th #1, which enables him to pull ahead of Elvis Presley to become the solo rock star with the most #1 albums. That's the good news. The bad news: The album sold just 99K copies in its first week. That's Springsteen's lowest first-week tally for a studio album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking music sales in 1991. It sold even less in its first week than Springsteen's famously uncommercial "The Ghost Of Tom Joad," which debuted with sales of 107K in November 1995. Of course, album sales have been declining industry-wide for years. And it's natural for sales of veteran artists to taper off over time. But this drop-off was sudden: "High Hopes" sold a little more than half as many copies in its first week as Springsteen's last studio album, "Wrecking Ball," which opened with sales of 196K in March 2012. Even so, having a #1 album is an always an achievement. And it allowed Springsteen to set some records, chiefly pushing ahead of Presley (who amassed 10 albums). Only two other artists in the rock era have had 10 or more #1 albums. The Beatles lead the pack with 19. Jay Z is second with 13. "High Hopes" also enters the U.K.'s Official Albums Chart at #1. It's Springsteen's 10th #1 in the U.K. It's his ninth album to reach #1 in both the U.S. and the U.K. Only the Beatles have had more transatlantic #1 albums (10). "High Hopes" was the title of a 1959 hit by fellow music legend and New Jersey native Frank Sinatra. The song won an Oscar for Original Song. The "Frozen" soundtrack dips to #2. It's #1 on Top Soundtracks for the eighth week. The movie also logged its eighth weekend in the top five at the box-office. The movie picked up two Oscar nominations last week: Animated Feature Film and Original Song for "Let It Go." "Frozen" sold 50K digital copies this week, which puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums for the third week. "Frozen" has sold 411K digital copies, which is the third highest tally for a soundtrack in digital history. It trails only "Pitch Perfect" (743K) and "Twilight" (739K). Kidz Bop Kids' "Kidz Bop 25" debuts at #3. This is the 18th volume in this series to reach the top 10. Only one franchise in music history has spawned more top 10 albums. That’s the "Now" franchise, which has sent 53 volumes into the top 10. The first "Kidz Bop" installment to reach the top 10 was "Kidz Bop 7" in February 2005. All but one installment since then has made the top 10 (though none have reached #1.) Jennifer Nettles' first solo album, "That Girl," debuts at #5. Nettles amassed four Top 10 albums with Sugarland. "That Girl" enters Top Country Albums at #1. Nettles had three #1 country albums with Sugarland. Nettles is just the fourth artist to top the country chart both as a solo artist and as a member of a group or duo. She follows Ronnie Dunn (Brooks & Dunn), Wynonna (The Judds) and Miranda Lambert (Pistol Annies). (Note: I’m not counting collaborations involving solo artists as groups or duos.) "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J holds at #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the second week (261K). Will it jump from #4 to #1 on the Hot 100 or will "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha (202K) hold on for a third week? You'll find out later today when we post my Songs blogs. Here's a recap of this week's top 10 albums. The Top Five: Bruce Springsteen's "High Hopes" debuts at #1 (99K). It's his 18th top 10 album…The "Frozen" soundtrack dips to #2 in its eighth week (87K). This is its sixth week in the top 10… Kidz Bop Kids' "Kidz Bop 25" debuts at #3 (65K). It's the 18th album in the franchise to reach the top 10… Beyonce's "Beyonce" drops from #2 to #4 in its sixth week (61K). It has been in the top five the entire time…Jennifer Nettles' "That Girl" debuts at #5 (54K). It's her first top 10 album as a solo artist. The Second Five: Switchfoot's "Fading West" debuts at #6 (39K). It's the band's third top 10 album…Lorde's "Pure Heroine" drops from #5 to #7 in its 16th week (31K). This is its 11th week in the top 10… Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" drops from #4 to #8 in its 11th week (29K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time… Katy Perry's "PRISM" drops from #7 to #9 in its 13th week (22K). This is its 12th week in the top 10… Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions" dips from #9 to #10 in its 72nd week (20K). This is its 23rdweek in the top 10 Four albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Kid Ink's "My Own Lane" drops from #3 to #21. One Direction's "Midnight Memories" drops from #6 to #13. Miley Cyrus' "Bangerz" drops from #8 to #15. R. Kelly's "Black Panties" drops from #10 to #17. Roseanne Cash's "The River & The Thread" debuts at #11. This is the first top 20 album of Cash's 33-year career. Two previous albums came close. "Seven Year Ache" reached #26 in 1981. "The List" hit #22 in 2009. Her dad, Johnny Cash, first cracked the top 20 with 1958's "The Fabulous Johnny Cash." Jon Pardi's debut album, "Write You A Song," debuts at #14. It enters Top Country Albums at #3. "Up All Night" climbed to #64 on last week's Hot 100…Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings' fifth studio album,"Give The People What They Want," debuts at #22. (The Kinks took an album with that same title to #15 in 1981.) Elevation Worship's third (and highest-charting) album, "Only King Forever," debuts at #23. Elevation Worship is a worship band from Charlotte, N.C. Lucinda Williams' 1988 album "Lucinda Williams" finally enters the chart at #39. It's #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the first time. Eric Clapton's "Crossroads Guitar Festival" logs its fifth week at #1 on Top Music Videos. Coming Attractions: A Great Big World's "Is There Anybody Out There?" is expected to be next week's top new entry, with sales in the 45K range, followed by "2014 Grammy Nominees" (40K) and Young the Giant's "Mind Over Matter" (30K). Also due: In This Moment's "Blood" and The Beatles' "The U.S. Albums," a digital bundle of the group's albums.

What's even worse about Madonna not having a #1 album in the 90s is that Ray of Light actually set the record for a female debut sales week and STILL had to settle for #2.
She still has the semi-obscure (and asterisked) record of every album of hers had at least one top ten single. (The asterisk belongs to "American Life," which had "Die Another Day", but that had previously been released on the Bond soundtrack).

br- I'd say a big asterisk to American Life having a top 10 if "Die Another Day" was tacked onto the album as an afterthought- but, Madonna said, when DADay was out, that it would appear on the coming album, so I have no issue with regarding it as a top 10 from that album (It was a collabo with Mirawis, after all, who was her sole co-producer for the album).
It's going to be a big challenge scoring a top 10 with future studio albums, so the buck may have ended at MDNA.

Or the proverbial "buck" could land her another top 10 off her next album just as it did with her last one. ;)

^She very well could- and if she did, she'd add another record- oldest female to score a top 10 on the Hot 100. I believe Tina Turner currently holds that distinction- she was 53 years and 8-9 months or so when "I Don't Wanna Fight" hit the top 10.

^She very well could- and if she did, she'd add another record- oldest female to score a top 10 on the Hot 100. I believe Tina Turner currently holds that distinction- she was 53 years and 8-9 months or so when "I Don't Wanna Fight" hit the top 10. So Madonna missed it by just a few months with GMAYL, then. Honestly I think she'll get another top ten or two. If something as mediocre as GMAYL could manage it (albeit with a shit-ton of promo), I think if she had a better lead single next time with plenty of promo (CC deal, viral-worthy video, etc.) she could hit the top ten again.

Wait, how old was Cher when Believe hit top 10?
