This is easily my favorite song on Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel, and actually one of my favorite Mariah songs period. I think it's one of her best ballads and it's pretty emotional - I'd even go so far as to say that it packs a greater emotional punch than "We Belong Together" - especially from the (incredible) bridge onward... her voice just sounds so heartbreaking!
What is great about this song, besides its lyrics (love the metaphors!) and melody, is that production-wise it was a fresh change after a bunch of "We Belong Together" knock-offs. That's why I think it was a shame "H.A.T.E.U." wasn't a hit (it didn't even manage a top 40 placement on the R&B charts); its chart performance doesn't reflect its quality as a song at all, IMO.
The Jermaine Dupri co-produced Remix is also worth checking out; Mariah's vocal performance is really nice and so is the "My Boo" sample.
PS: I'm not posting the music video because a) it's not good and b) it doesn't include the full version of the song.

This should have been the second single instead of IWKWLI...even though it probably would not have done well, and the remix should have come out simultaneously.
I still listen to this track now. Shame it basically fell on deaf ears as far as the public is concerned...

It's always been one of my favorites from that album. Very emotional.
H.A.T.E. that the title stands for "Having a Typical Emotional Upset." That always bothered me, I would have prefered it just been "Hate U" or "Hate You." But the title doesn't make the song any less wonderful.

Great song. Had it followed 'Obsessed' and the momentum built by that one at radio, I'm sure it would have done much better if only at Urban radio and on the R&B chart.

No need to call my phone 'cause I changed my number today And matter fact, I think I'm moving away, away Sorry, the frustration's got me feeling that way And I just keep having one last thing to say
And I just wanna hold you, touch you, feel you, be near you I miss you baby, baby, baby I'm tired of try'na fake through, but there's nothing I can do Boy, I can't wait to hate you
The bridge is so incredible.

My favorite single from that album and one of my favorite post-2000 singles of hers. It wasn't a good single choice though. Wayyyyyy too slow for radio.

Some of the best lyrics she's ever penned:
This was a love phenomenon No one could explain And I wish I could press reset And feel that feeling again I sit and press rewind And watch us every night Wanna pause it But I can't make it stay (Just gotta let it play)

Her label messed up by not releasing this as the second single. It's still one of the best songs on the album.
The Jermaine Dupri remix was awesome.

The remix ranked #7 on Slant's The 10 Greatest Mariah Carey Remixes.

I remember a snippet of the track being played a few months before the album came out and I immediately loved the Prince vibe. The song itself lived up to my high expectations with ease, probably my favorite track on the album. Definitely in my top 10 from her post-Butterfly.
...and then that video came out...

Amazing -- the lyrics, the delivery, the production. Definitely in my top 5 Mariah tracks.

The best song on the album. So glad it was a single, regardless of it's performance.

This is easily one of the best songs she did during her time at IDJ, in my opinion. I love it. I love how the production starts out pretty and like a fairy tale, and we even get the "Once upon a time..." opening line. Then the beat kicks in and gives the track a darker feel, which matches the lyric describing how the fairy tale didn't last. I love the concept of waiting to hate someone because you know you should be over them but you aren't there yet. It isn't too common to see that represented in song. I also really love the "We went round for round til we knocked love out/We were laying in the ring not making a sound" lyric and how here voice is sort of altered there to give the vocal a zoned out feel (which matches the lyric). And, yeah, the bridge is really terrific. Just a killer song/track.

Best song on the album. One thing I loved about MOAIA is that it was very melodic and this was no exception.

The music video is so terrible that it made me cancel the song, but it's always a pleasure to re-discover it.
Easily her best R&B ballad post-"We Belong Together." The whole vibe of the production slays. And the "My Boo" remix >>

Just found this song recently and have to say I absolutely love this song! The lyrics, the melodies, the background vocals, & the overall production really captures the feeling of this song. Easily one of her best 2000s songs.

I used to find this song an absolute overrated snooze fest. I was in shock when they released it as a single. At the time I remember even thinking the whistle notes were pretty bad and dreary. However I loved the remix which sampled “My Boo”. Like most Mimi songs I ended up liking it, but no where near how most of the Lambs do.
