That's because Walter produced both. He added a guitar solo to Bolton's. I looked on allmusic.com and Mariah is listed in the credits as "arranger," likely for her contributions to the backing vocals on it, which are similar to some of the ones on hers! She should've been listed as a co-producer.

I was never into the album version of “Hate U” it took me awhile to find much good in it.
Back then it was one of my least favorite tracks from the album.
I remember thinking the production was very dreary and her whistle notes kind of annoyed me.
I was surprised they released it as a single.
Like most Mimi tracks I got used to it through the years, but it took awhile.
However I LOVED the remix.
I think in Boston our local Rhythmic station may have played it a few times before it got yanked.
They should have promoted the remix and maybe it would have done better??

Mariah clearly loves "Obsessed," so I'm surprised she hasn't recorded more songs in that vein. Even though "Dreamlover"/"Fantasy"/"Heartbreaker"/"Honey" are widely hailed as her best leads, I'd still be thrilled for something like "It's Like That" or "Obsessed." I think Caution was a big step in the right direction, but I'd like a couple of more upbeat tracks.

On another note, if another song of hers is to go viral, I'd love it to be something from TEOM or E=MC2, like "It's Like That" or "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time." I think even a song like "Shake It Off" should be getting more streams, considering it was still a big hit in its own right.
