I swear the devil is doing some crazy work on this Sunday because unless im still intoxicated I think i read a dig at Daydream, Butterfly and The Roof on the same page. Sin, motherf**king sin...y'all sinners. Girl, I tell you! That is a trio of blasphemy if I ever saw it!

I don't love the "sleepwalky" vocals of "The Roof" (even if they fit the theme)- just me. :) If I had to rank my top five on Butterfly, they would be:
1. Fourth of July 2. Breakdown 3. Honey 4. Close My Eyes 5. My All

I can see some of y'all need to be visited by Churchriah! Go listen to Fly Like a Bird and I Wish You Well and let your mind be healed and ears be cleansed, so we don't make such terrible statements again. Remember the Mariah Mafia much like the Beygency will come take you out for such words.

I feel like i'm the only one who LIVES for that beautiful song

You know I was playing Memoirs today while I was cooling down from my run, and I think Mariah and team missed a golden opportunity with marketing. I would have been marketing it as, "For all y'all b!tches that like to complain that Mariah collaborates with too many artists well there are no collaborations on this album, so y'all have no excuse not to buy this. This is 100% Mariah!" The irony is that this is the one album that would have benefited from a couple collaborations to break up the monotony of that album.

It wasn't the lack of guests that made Memoirs monotonous - in fact to have a 100% Mariah album was quite refreshing - it was the fact that it was produced almost entirely by one person/team. THAT's what bombed that album. You need to really gel as a creative duo to pump out a full album and have it sound consistently good throughout. I think the Mariah - Dream & Tricky partnership failed there.

IMO there is no top 5 for Butterfly because it is top-to-bottom perfection and every single song adds to the cohesion and propels it to being one of the greatest albums ever made.
Seriously, every Mariah album is amazing. Sure, comparing them to one another, some are better than others, but I'd still rather listen to any Mariah album over another artist. Two weeks to go before we have yet another incredible record to listen to for years on end.

Butterfly is too flawless for me to have a set top 5. It would constantly change. I think the only song that would not change would be "My All." I still think it's one of the most flawless songs ever.

It's way too difficult to pick a top 5 for Butterfly definitely. I would have "Breakdown", "The Roof" and "Fourth of July" in there no matter what though.

I wonder what she is going to sing on the Today Show. She will look ridiculous just going there to perform a medley of her old hits and not using the opportunity to feature one of her new songs. It is making me nervous because I don't want a performance of You're Mine. I wouldn't mind a redo for #Beautiful to erase all the other tragic ones that she did last year from my head.

After a first full play my first impressions are: Fantasy and Always Be My Baby are obviously flawless and remain some of my favorite Mariah tracks. I never really listened to One Sweet Day- after listening to it I LOVE it and it definitely sounds familiar, I'm sure I've heard it before but wow that melody is gorgeous. Album tracks that are my FAVORITE after the first play are: - Underneath the Stars (reminds me so much of Fourth of July- which I love! love the atmosphere of this) - When I Saw You (loving the way she sings this, especially the chorus) - Forever (this one might be one of my favorite Mariah songs after a first listen, I'm soo slayed- her vocals and the feel of it is beautiful) - Melt Away (YAS this is such a flawless melody, so perfect!) - Looking In (this is so beautiful, the lyrics are so powerful and I love the simplicity of it) Open Arms is a GREAT cover too. Long Ago is cute but didn't slay me as the rest of the album did and I Am Free didn't do much for me. I think my FAVORITE non-single songs are Underneath the Stars, Forever and Melt Away. It's hard not to put Looking In in the top 3 but it is only my first listen so I'm sure things will change! Honey, you need to get on the bonus song from that era:

I can only imagine the explosion of pages this thread will undergo when there is more actual news on the album (i.e. snippets, performances of new songs, etc.) It's going to be so festive, dahhhlings.

That song is the one song I don't use on Daydream. Same goes for Whenever You Call. Two peas in a very soggy pod. They are the reasons I can't say either Daydream or Butterfly are my favorite Mariah albums. If I can skip a song on an album, the quality is automatically lowered. I find "When I Saw You" boring, and on my iPod I sub out "WISY" for the more soulful "Slipping Away." I then love every song on Daydream, and it's maybe my favorite album of all-time. 'Pop' perfection.

Anyway, I echo the "Breakdown" love. If you haven't seen it, this showcases what a gorgeous melody "Breakdown" has:

I would switch out Slipping Away for Long Ago and it would be a flaw-free album (not that it isn't already tbh).

I think if Slipping Away took the place of anything it should have been either I Am Free or Open Arms.

They both have nice vocals, but I feel Long Ago gives the album much needed bounce.

I've always heard so many comments about "Melt Away" but I've never heard about "Forever" which imo I think is SO flawless and NEEDS to be more discussed and praised. Forever is amazing. It was a radio-only single. It's video got a lot of play back then. It's a live version of the song, and it might actually be better than the album version. "Forever" has those 50s chords, and those little strings riffs, and it comes across to me like her version of "Hopelessly Devoted To You." It's a song I have grown an appreciation for over the years. I still think "Melt Away" would have been a better single back then, but I do like "Forever." Plus, her vocal on "Forever" is incredible.

What song did she steal from the queen? I agree now seems like no single til release day a la Yonce. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I'm_Real_(song)#Controversy The original version of "I'm Real" sampled a 1978 song from Yellow Magic Orchestra called "Firecracker", which was originally supposed to be sampled in "Loverboy". After Jennifer Lopez took the sample from her, she ended up sampling "Candy" by Cameo instead.

Open Arms is also a great cover but Long Ago does not give me the life that I need to be given. I LOVE IAF, and it oddly sounds like a Christmas carol to me (I think because of how similar the vocals are to most of Merry Christmas). Otherwise, I think Long Ago is underrated and is the precursor to Breakdown that no one notices.

What song did she steal from the queen? I agree now seems like no single til release day a la Yonce. Even if we don't get a new single before release day, it will in no way be "a la Yonce." We already have 2 songs from the album, so fans aren't in the dark like with Beyonce's album. I am so tired of the comparisons to that album/release. I do suspect we will hear another single before the album drops, though, so people won't in any way be able to compare this to Beyonce. What song did she steal from the queen? After Jennifer Lopez took the sample from her, she ended up sampling "Candy" by Cameo instead. Not only that, but then Ja Rule was brought on for the remix of "I'm Real," and it was treated like a duet as opposed to him just having a guest verse. Mariah initially had that same concept, and with Ja Rule, on "If We." So, between the two versions of "I'm Real," two ideas off Glitter were stolen from Mariah. I think it was Cory Rooney (along with Tommy) who was responsible. Mariah blamed J Lo at first, at least in part (keep in mind J Lo also covered "Do You Know Where You're Going To" shortly after Mariah), but I think she ultimately realized J Lo wasn't all that involved in her own career.

Because I also had Grown Woman and Flawless on my Itunes before the Beyonce release. :) What the poster meant is that Mariah may be waiting until the album release to release a single, like Beyonce. They didn't offer this as fact, but rather an option.

Mariah may wait until the album release to release a third single, but this is in no way like Beyonce (you didn't know you had two songs that would be on the album, and those songs weren't pushed to radio or performed on TV shows like Mariah's songs). This need people have to compare anything and everything to Beyonce's album is ridiculous. I also never listened to her debut, Emotions, or Glitter. Or her first christmas album! Damn I got some work to do... I've always been SO in love with her material from Butterfly-present (and now Daydream!) but I need to catch up now! I have Music Box but I only really listen to the singles- I don't think I've ever really listened to the rest of it. Like others, I envy you getting to experience some of her albums for the first time. Are you really young or something? The debut sounds fairly "dated," though it doesn't bother me. The songwriting is very Motown-ish in some ways, which I like, but as I said the production was very of its time. Her vocals are incredible. Emotions goes more old-school in its production. The uptempos are like 70s Stax and Philly records, and many of the ballads have echoes of 60s (and even older) soul songs. Please listen to Music Box again! The melodies are beautiful, and her singing is so gorgeous and soulful. "Music Box" is a real standout. I wish the bonus tracks "Do You Think of Me" and "Everything Fades Away" had made the album because they are better than songs that did make it (and they would have added some variety).

This need people have to compare anything and everything to Beyonce's album is ridiculous.. Does it really matter? The fact is I already had two tracks that ended up on her album, and Beyonce knew I had them. And let's face it, what Beyonce did is now part of music history, and will be referenced until it is forgotten, whether any of us like it or not. No, it does not really apply to Mariah's upcoming album. So what? Sometimes the easiest way to get across a point is to reference a "famous" example that is similar. And nothing the poster said was inaccurate.
