So, we should reference Beyonce's album even though there are ZERO similarities...just because?? LOL. OK then. Oh...and I'm PRETTY sure Beyonce had NO idea what you had or didn't have prior to her album's release.

I wonder when they will have snippets for each song on iTunes. I mean its one thing for people to hear the album as a whole which I can understand why she is waiting til after it is released before deciding on the next single. But if there is no snippets so people have an idea on what we may hear then I dont think people will buy her album based on curiousity.

]Does it really matter? The fact is I already had two tracks that ended up on her album, and Beyonce knew I had them. And let's face it, what Beyonce did is now part of music history, and will be referenced until it is forgotten, whether any of us like it or not. No, it does not really apply to Mariah's upcoming album. So what? Sometimes the easiest way to get across a point is to reference a "famous" example that is similar. And nothing the poster said was inaccurate. But what Mariah is doing isn't similar to Beyonce, and it most certainly isn't a result of Beyonce's release (i.e. she didn't see Beyonce's release and then copy her). There was no need for anyone to bring Beyonce in as a comparison. And, yes, it does matter that Mariah promoted her two songs as singles. That makes it different from you having heard 2 random Beyonce tracks that ended up on the album; the general public did not have those Beyonce songs, nor had they even heard them. The general public has heard "#Beautiful" and is at least aware that Mariah has an album coming out and that she has released music from it. And while what Beyonce did may be a part of history, the fact is to this point it has had no real influence on the music indsutry. Other artists aren't doing the same thing, which is partly why it's so frustrating to see people grasping at straws to make every release seem similar to Beyonce. It's inane. Anyway, I was just watching the making-of thing on "Love Story," and how much better is that song without JD talking all over it? I wish that version was on the album, because the melody on that song is really beautiful. Can someone fuse that clip of the song with the album version?

It wasn't the lack of guests that made Memoirs monotonous - in fact to have a 100% Mariah album was quite refreshing - it was the fact that it was produced almost entirely by one person/team. THAT's what bombed that album. You need to really gel as a creative duo to pump out a full album and have it sound consistently good throughout. I think the Mariah - Dream & Tricky partnership failed there. Personally I loved that Mariah mostly worked with one production team for the album, and that the album was all solo songs. For me it provides a cohesive, all-Mariah experience. I like a lot of Memoirs, particularly the first half or so which are all Dream/Tricky songs, but I like them for reasons different from why I like work they've done with other artists. I actually think the general issue is more that Mariah held Dream/Tricky back. If you listen to Dream's solo albums or even the songs they've done for others (like "Umbrella"), they are more adventurous than is shown on Memoirs. Mariah has admitted her favorite thing is a mid-tempo, and I think it's clear she watered down their production a bit on the album. I was really looking forward to hearing Mariah's wall-of-sound vocals on songs akin to Dream's "Right Side of My Brain" or "Rockin' That Sh*t." Even something like Usher's "Moving Mountains" or Celine's "Skies of L.A." had more heft production-wise. Anyway, I can't really rank songs from her albums as some have done, but I can name my 5 favorites (including b-sides/bonuses) from each: Mariah Carey"Vision of Love" "I Don't Wanna Cry" "Vanishing" "Alone In Love" "Love Takes Time" Emotions"Emotions" "If It's Over" "To Be Around You" (should have been a single!) "Til the End of Time" "The Wind" Music Box"Dreamlover" "Music Box" "Without You" "Just to Hold You Once Again" "Everything Fades Away" Daydream"Fantasy" "Underneath The Stars" "Always Be My Baby" "Melt Away" (should have been a single) "Looking In" Butterfly"Butterfly" "The Roof" "Breakdown" "Close My Eyes" "The Beautiful Ones" Rainbow"Heartbreaker" "Bliss" "Against All Odds" "Crybaby" "Petals" (and I count the "Rainbow Interlude" with it) Glitter"Didn't Mean To Turn You On" "All My Life" (should have been the lead single) *Honestly, I don't use much else from this one Charmbracelet"Clown" "My Saving Grace" "You Had Your Chance" "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" "Miss You" The Emanicipation of Mimi"We Belong Together" "Stay The Night" (should have been a single) "Circles" "I Feel It" "Fly Like a Bird" E=MC2"Side Effects" "I'll Be Loving U Long Time" (this or "Migrate" should have been the second single) "Thanx For Nothin'" "I Wish You Well" "Heat" Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel"Betcha Gon Know" "HATEU" (this should be among her most iconic songs) "Candy Bling" "Ribbon" "Up Out My Face" So, for every album there are at least 2 non-singles that made my top 5. That's what separates Mariah from competitors like Whitney and Celine for me.

Oh man, you might be onto something because, while there were some signature Dream/Tricky bells and whistles (especially on Standing Ovation and Obsessed), you've nailed it. As soon as I heard they were going to work together, I thought "I would love to hear what Mariah sounds on an Electrik Red album!" but we never quite got that, did we? I still love Memoirs though.

That's what separates Mariah from competitors like Whitney and Celine for me. I think the problem for Mariah is unfortunately for her she was in a producing bubble for much of her career in that her record company limited who she could work with for her albums. I think had she had a bit more opportunity to work with varied producers early in her career, then she might have moved past the issues that we get with production at times and the trust issues in handing control over to a producer at times. So now, I think we have a combination where yes she kind of muddles the production at times, but I also feel like producers meld their sound to try to capture what they feel the general essence of what a Mariah song is. I think some producers fall under the weight of Mariah's success as much as she does. Some producers don't want to be the one to produce a flop for her. They want to be one of those number 1 songs, so they probably defer to Mariah seeing as she is the key component to the song. I mean the only way things like that stop is when you have a producer who is just as strong and determined as Mariah. A good example of that is actually Q-Tip for this album in which he made it known to Mariah that he wasn't going to be happy with anything less than the version he worked out for her.

Yeeeesssss. @ the love for Lullaby.
Incredible lyrics and a great Part 2 of The Roof.
To me, it's some of the most "real life" lyrics mariah has written. That line "yes, I'll come home with you tonight".... Shoot, you know anyone with an ex has been there once or twice.

I've been listening to a lot of random Mariah songs on shuffle lately. Can someone tell me the best playlist of songs I should I listen to? Singles, non-singles, lives, remixes, unreleased tracks, etc.

I can't @ the hate for 'Long Ago'. One of my favorite MC tracks ever!!! It's not among my top tier Mariah songs, but it's definitely a solid track. I think it was probably her darkest song to that point, and I really like the b-section and the bridge. I've been listening to a lot of random Mariah songs on shuffle lately. Can someone tell me the best playlist of songs I should I listen to? Singles, non-singles, lives, remixes, unreleased tracks, etc. Um, that's a big task. Ha. What I mean is, are you looking for like 10-15 songs, or like 50? And do you want them to flow, or just be random? Some suggestions I have, split into groupings by style: Soul ballads"Vision of Love" "Can't Let Go" "If It's Over" "Thank God I Found You/Make It Last" "Circles" Breezy summer tracks"Emotions" "Dreamlover" "Fantasy" "Heartbreaker" "#Beautiful" Gospel/inspirational tracks"Make It Happen" "Anytime You Need a Friend" "I Am Free" "Fly Like a Bird" "I Wish You Well" Urban jams"The Roof" "My All/Stay Awhile" "Crybaby" "You Had Your Chance" "Migrate" Introspective narratives"Looking In" "Close My Eyes" "Petals" "Sunflower For Alfred Roy" "Side Effects" Slamming dance remixes"Dreamlover" def club "Anytime You Need A Friend" C&C Club "Fantasy" Def Club "Heartbreaker/If You Should Ever Be Lonely" Junior's Club "I Still Believe" Kings Mix Stellar b-sides/bonus/live tracks"Everything Fades Away" "If Only You Knew/Over the Rainbow" "Miss You" "I Feel It" "With You I'm Born Again" (with John Legend) PM me if you need any of these tracks.

I really wanted just a general list of her best tracks, not so much a singles list or just album tracks. So, this looks great!

(And it's not up for debate) I like the production on "TGMH" a lot and like the song in general, but it is crying for fuller vocals. So many songs from that era would have been truly great if she had sang them in a fuller voice: My Saving Grace (more so if she hadn't altered the pitch of the belting), Subtle Invitation, Bringin' On The Heartbreak, There Goes My Heart, and Miss You (more so if she hadn't mumbled so much).

I feel like you are missing a crucial category for Mariah's discography, being her best love ballads. My top 5, in no particular order: Love Takes Time I Don't Wanna Cry We Belong Together My All So Blessed Yeah, I did mean to include break-up ballads, of which most of your list fits. I think of a 'love song' as being more positive. Ha. Break-up songs (this is probably the category with the most potential songs) "Alone in Love" "Love Takes Time" "My All" "We Belong Together" "HATEU" Love songs"Sent From Up Above" "So Blessed" "Melt Away" "Thank God I Found You" "Joy Ride" And I'm not sure this song fits any of the categories we've done (well, maybe breezy summer songs) but I think it's one of the best Mariah uptempos:

Dunno, but these two songs are ... just awesome in every way

Even if we don't get a new single before release day, it will in no way be "a la Yonce." We already have 2 songs from the album, so fans aren't in the dark like with Beyonce's album. I am so tired of the comparisons to that album/release. I do suspect we will hear another single before the album drops, though, so people won't in any way be able to compare this to Beyonce. I agree it won't be like Beyonce, but it has nothing to do with how many songs "we have" in advance. Because I also had Grown Woman and Flawless on my Itunes before the Beyonce release. :) What the poster meant is that Mariah may be waiting until the album release to release a single, like Beyonce. They didn't offer this as fact, but rather an option. Exactly what I meant thank you for clarifying. The only similarities the two will have is that Mariah likely won't have a single out til release day, just like Beyonce did. That's as far as my comparisons between the two eras went.

But Mariah has already had a single out; two, in fact! If you mean she won't have a single that is currently a hit out, that is true, but that has been true for releases other than the Beyonce release. And since Mariah's situation would be because the songs ran their course as opposed to her not having released any singles, someone other than Beyonce would be a better comparison, no? My point is it just seems like people will grasp at all kinds of straws to throw Beyonce's release in as a comparison/influence.

Yeah, maybe, but then again I can relate to 100 other Mimi songs and 1000 others of other singers/artists It is everything about these songs that click with everything about my situations

They dated around the time of Butterfly album, and she wrote The Roof about him. They didn't last long, but it apparently wasn't a bad breakup (and she liked his family a lot... "How's your family? please say hello for me"). She even eludes to The Roof... "So familiar, you know, that it actually almost feels like déjà vu, of that night on the roof." It's about running into him again around 2001-2002 (her breakdown time.... "Don't believe rumors") and.... Well, the lyrics tell you what happened next.

He's a very, very famous baseball player in the States. Sure, let's see the lyrics.

No problem. I completely got it, and just wanted to clarify that you wweren't jumping on any bandwagon with your statement. You were very clear.
