I was watching the new Hot Ones with N Sync, and JC (the actual best member of the group) noted that in its day a #1 on TRL was bigger than a #1 on the Hot 100. I don't know if that's true, but TRL was certainly a huge pop culture thing. I was just reviewing all of the videos that hit #1 on TRL, and I had completely forgotten that "Through the Rain" and "Say Somethin'" hit #1. Wow. The Mariah videos to hit #1 on TRL: TRL was also great because pop, rock, and R&B were all represented, but it was also very niche in that MTV was niche. 106 & Park of course also became huge in the early 2000s and would air for more than a decade.
I heard him make that comment also. I think for NSYNC and BSB the TRL #1 probably was bigger than the Hot 100. I used to remember coming home after school every day and racing to be by the TV with my snack to watch. Or being sure to watch every day in the summer when it was too hot outside! The insane amount of fans that they would bring to Times Square was just wild. Eminem, Britney, etc. it really did something for their careers. TRL was super hip and cool and I'm sure plenty of radio programmers and other music related things used to keep their ears and eyes on what TRL was playing and doing since the demographic of TRL was what also needed to appeal to listeners of radio/etc. I wouldn't say MTV was "niche" during that time, that was still when MTV Was quite popular and respected and of course still played a ton of music. TRL was like my generations version of TikTok of finding out music and being with the fan communities and stuff. Rallying together to vote for your favorite video, etc. I think TRL truly was a cultural institution.
On a side note since this is the Mariah thread, I still remember the day Mariah came on with her ice cream cart LOL that was definitely also one of the most iconic moments

Snatched some mid level tickets for the Hollywood Bowl, which is the worst venue in the country imo!

I don't necessarily disagree with JC, because at the time we know that the most popular songs in the country didn't always hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 because of the chart rules. Their labels usually didn't make their songs widely available as singles. Yeah it wasn't the chart rules, it was that the labels didn't release physical singles. Even when Billboard started allowing airplay-only songs to chart (which happened just before the peak of 90s teen pop), boy bands still weren't often getting #1s because physical singles weren't available. To that end I get what you mean and perhaps it is what JC meant. Ironically NSync were the only 'boy band' to get a #1 since "It's Gonna Be Me" was released as a physical single and got 2 weeks at #1. It sales weren't overly high, though, so I assume it was a limited single. Do you know? And yes JamaicaFunk², I definitely remember "My All" being on Total Request. According to Wikipedia that show debuted in April 1998. Yeah you're right I misspoke a bit, the labels could have had those songs at No. 1 if they made the singles widely available, even if only for a limited time and in limited shipments. I remember "My Heart Will Go On" getting to No. 1 that way. They made like only 500,000 copies available and that was enough to get it to No. 1.

I remember "My Heart Will Go On" getting to No. 1 that way. They made like only 500,000 copies available and that was enough to get it to No. 1. Yup. Other #1s that had limited releases included "One Week," "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing," and of course several Mariah #1s (I'll Be There, Heartbreaker, and TGIFY all had limited releases). Billboard gets a lot of flak for the charts at the time, but they were in a no-win situation. When they only allowed songs with physical singles to chart it of course left some big hits out, but then when they allowed airplay-only hits to chart it led to them getting lower peaks than maybe it felt like they deserved. That wasn't really Billboard's fault, though. As you noted labels could have released a physical single. The late 1990s and early 2000s were the peak for album sales in most of our lifetime, and labels definitely focus there more.

Johnta Austin talks about Mariah and others below, I should have it set to start with the Mariah section. He gives her a lot of praise:
He gives her credit for the little parts that make "Shake It Off."
He seems to have the timeline wrong, though, or previous reports were wrong because he says they did GYN, SIO, and ILT in the initial sessions and then LA Reid said he thinks they have one more.

Kelly is looking snatched! Anyway more than writing together, I'd just love to see Mariah do the vocal arrangement on a Kelly song.
I'd also love to hear Kelly cover "You Need Me," even just on her Kellyoke thing. In some ways it feels like the template for a lot of Kelly's songs ("Walk Away" and the like). Not that it will ever happen, but in general it would be cool to hear the women she's influenced cover some of her lesser known songs to give them attention: Kelly - "You Need Me" Ariana - "Forever" J Hud - "Vanishing" Brandy - "Lullaby" Ella Mai - "Subtle Invitation" Olivia Rodrigo - "Long Ago" Doja Cat - "You Don't Know What to Do" Taylor Swift - "Thanks For Nothin'" Beyonce - "Breakdown" SZA - "Babydoll"

Interesting choices. Maybe Olivia and Taylor could sing something from Chick, but that's really it.
