I still think "Melt Away" is a better more commercial song and would have charted higher. It could've help move more units of Daydream.

Honestly, while I like "Slipping Away", I think it's a bit overrated by fans. ::dodges tomatoes:: I like it as well and put it on my version of Daydream in place of "WISY," but I agree it's overrated. It still would be middle tier Daydream for me.

"Slipping Away" is my favorite Mariah b-side, but I don't think it was a missed single opportunity. I definitely don't see it as a missed Hot 100 #1. I think it probably would have performed similarly to how "Breakdown" performed a couple years later (Top 10 at Urban radio, while pushing something else to Pop radio). In retrospect, yeah it would have been a nice segue to Butterfly.. but Mariah wasn't exactly struggling with Urban radio at the time and the focus with her at that point was on songs that would be multi-format radio hits (Pop, Urban, Rhythmic, Adult Contemporary...) and "Slipping Away" would have been a more Urban radio focused single.

To clarify, the label was (rightfully, at the time, at least from a commercial perspective) focused on Pop radio first and foremost so Pop radio potential took priority over Urban radio potential when it came to choosing singles. If anything, I think they should have pushed a full fledged Urban radio single at the time they were pushing "Forever" to Pop and AC (could have been "Melt Away" or "Underneath The Stars" with remixes.. I don't think they really pushed the latter to Urban radio because it barely charted and Mariah was at her commercial peak).

And I don't see how "Melt Away" wouldn't have fit at Top 40 radio considering Toni and others were having pop hits with R&B ballads and mid-tempos. (Plus "Forever" with its 50s ballad style wasn't exactly mainstream in 1996 either, tbh.)

Slipping Away wouldn't have reached #1 at that time because "Macarena" was dominating the charts. I'm not so sure. "Macarena" was #1 a few weeks with like 110,000 in sales. Its airplay wasn't too great, so in that sense it was at least a little vulnerable. Now, a fourth single from an album isn't likely to sell huge so I agree it wasn't a sure thing, but Mariah single at that time sold a lot (aided by remixes) so who knows? In all honesty, if Donna Lewis’ “I Love You, Always Forever” couldn’t reach number one on the Hot 100 which was #2 on behind “Macarena” for 9 weeks, and had over 100M AI for several weeks at the time and moderate sales, then “Slipping Away” wouldn’t have stood a chance. 💀 That said, “Melt Away” would have been the perfect single if released in Q4. I genuinely think it could have competed alongside “No Diggity; It’s All Coming Back To Me Now; Unbreak My Heart” which were three of the biggest songs of Fall/Winter 1996.

This song also had mass potential.

On a lighter note- Caution vinyl is sold out on her site 👏🏽

If I had BDS & SoundScan access, I would compile the Radio Songs (Hot 100 Airplay) going back to 1991 with all station genres included. I'm sure Mariah and many others would see even higher airplay peaks and Hot 100 performance.

Is there a site that has her radio format peaks (sans pop) throughout the 90s? I would love to see how her singles charted in Rhythmic/Urban markets!

Is there a site that has her radio format peaks (sans pop) throughout the 90s? I would love to see how her singles charted in Rhythmic/Urban markets! I have her R&R (aka Mediabase) peaks from 1990-2006. I posted them a while back, so I'll just quote that post: So I found a bunch of PDFs with the old R&R/Mediabase charts so I looked through them and got the peaks and chart runs from each of her songs from 1990 through 2006. I'm putting them in all in a spoiler because shes so successful you would be scrolling forever: Pop
I didn't track her pop peaks since they're already listed at this link: wweb.uta.edu/faculty/gghunt/charts/mcarey.htmlRhythmic#9 – Without You* #20 – Anytime You Need A Friend #5 – Endless Love #1 – Fantasy#1 – One Sweet Day#49 – Open Arms #1 – Always Be My Baby#17 – Forever #39 – Underneath the Stars #1 – Honey #8 – Butterfly #13 – Breakdown #7 – My All #17 – Sweetheart #31 – When You Believe #7 – I Still Believe #2 – Heartbreaker #8 – Thank God I Found You #40 – Crybaby #19 – Loverboy #50 – Don’t Stop (Funkin’ 4 Jamaica) #43 – Boy (I Need You) #3 – I Know What You Want #27 – U Make Me Wanna #9 – It’s Like That #1 – We Belong Together#1 – Shake It Off#1 – Don’t Forget About Us#48 – So Lonely #26 – Say Somethin’ *Peaked prior to the creation of the chart. Melt Away should’ve been a single for sure. Just imagine if they could get Toni Braxton to do a duet version, ughhh the deliciousness we never had...

"Goin' Up Yonder" is amazing. She really needs to do a gospel EP.

It’s interesting to see how huge the Butterfly/Rainbow singles were on Urban/Rhythmic/Urban AC, when they’re often considered to have “underperformed” at radio, when it really was just a difference with Pop radio.

I am sure she'd do tons of remixes for Melt Away. And a melancholic video It didn't have to be #1, even a top 10 charting would have been very nice.

Didn't realize "Underneath the Stars" cracked R&R's rhythmic chart. It also cracked Billboard's Adult R&B chart, and peaked at 69 on R&B Airplay. Was it an official radio release, then? At the least, perhaps to rhythmic and Adult R&B outlets.
The Rarities comes in at No. 40 on the Album Sales chart this week; it drops off the Billboard 200.

The Can't Take That Away EP's cover art has been switched from the Valentines EP cover to the single's original cover. I prefer the original one better, glad they switched it.

As long as Mariah herself continues to recognize Butterfly as her best album, that's all that matters!

You know what really grates my nerves and her memoir really put this in perspective. How everyone wants to credit Tommy, but he doesn’t get thrown under the bus during her Butterfly-Glitter eras. Rather than invest in building not only her legacy and his, he goes and tries to sabotage a still viable and bankable artist, and he could have helped culminate and build those ideas rather than pilfer them to use for other artists. That must have been a bitch to have your own instincts and ideas cast aside only for them to be deemed worthy to use for your label mates.

As long as Mariah herself continues to recognize Butterfly as her best album, that's all that matters! Well Mariah is blinded by the memories of her and D.J., thus not objective.
