Clearly I mentally blocked the Stella era because I'm still surprised at how awful a time that was for me and I assume Mariah upon reflection. I never liked Stella from jump I'm surprised Mimi fell for that snake.

But that is old and love the Elle cover and title. Synonymous with Christmas and 4 decades at keeping her name at the front of the line regardless of current charts. Even without Christmas itself Mariah has done what most havent and that is still be talked about and relevant in their twilight years or if they dont achieve success commercially

I love all parts of the song, including the ones you mention. The charm of “Loverboy”, either version, *is* the campiness of it all though. If we wanted to make it un-camp we’d also have to remove memorable lyrics and Adlibs like “you’re my sugar daddy”, which I would never want to do without.

The key addition to the FC version are the ABMB/Fantasy/Dreamlover like *do do da dum* chants, these made it campy + fun, cool, and catchy— the sample makes it more playful. Theyre also what I think would have let it have a chance at radio; imo they immediately pull you into the song and end it on a feel good note.

Also, the “girl chanting” vocals coming back behind Mariah during the chorus was SUCH a winning move. Ugh. 😭 ❤️
