So, I noticed "Rockin" is essentially only 18k behind Mariah domestically on Spotify streams for yesterday (and the last time I checked as well), while "Rockin" is above her on iTunes. Is there more competition this year from Brenda or is it always this close?

Yes!!! I'm glad AIWFCIY finally hit #1 in the UK. A part of me still wished it would happen this year but I didn't hold out much hope for it. Last year the song got new videos, multiple physical releases, and of course, it remained a streaming monster. Plus, there was a ton of hype and media attention since it was the 25th anniversary of the song (and 1st Christmas album). Yet despite all of that, the song still somehow missed out. It is both surprising and just so satisfying to see the song finally reach the top despite all the barriers it had.
With the song reaching #1 in both the UK and Italy this year, I believe that just leaves Spain as the last major European music market it has yet to reach #1 in. I hope it happens eventually.

The discounted price on iTunes is helping "Rockin'" but sales are so small it isn't a big deal. |

Last year was the first time Brenda was immediately behind Mariah in chart position (in previous years there was always at least one song between them on the chart), but yeah, Brenda has certainly gotten closer to Mariah in points this time. RATCT actually is 6.8k ahead of AIWFCIY on the latest Spotify update now (Taylor and Cudi's album bombs are going to distract a lot of people from this). Last year AIWFCIY maintained a 100-200k lead on RATCT on Spotify throughout the season and RATCT didn't crack the top 20 on iTunes. Actually it appears that most of the older Christmas songs have gained on Mariah this year, on Spotify. Jingle Bell Rock, It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, RATCT, and AIWFCIY are all streaming in the low 1M range right now; this time last year Mariah was streaming ~868k and the other three were 100-200k behind her. Mariah is promoting the Magical Christmas special so she might be inadvertently taking away sales and streams from herself (i.e. time fans would spend playing AIWFCIY on a loop, we're now splitting between that and new recordings) but I'm also wondering if people are listening to one or two Spotify playlists more than normal as opposed to forming their own, in which case streams for the most popular songs will be more uniform. Nonetheless, AIWFCIY is far ahead of RATCT on Apple Music (#49 vs #186 on the the last update I saw) and on Amazon Music Mariah is #1 while Brenda is #3. So RATCT probably is still not quite a threat for #1...yet. It could possibly challenge on the 1/2/21 chart. |

We’ll see what happens. I’m greedy and want all the weeks at No. 1 for Mariah lol, but if Brenda gets ahead of her one year it won’t be the end of the world! |
