The article/interview Dreams posted is terrific. I love the description of "AIWFCIY" early in the song, and Mariah being the anti-Grinch. She also talks pretty specifically about the writing of the song in relation to Walter, so maybe people can finally get over it.

I'm not complaining but I thought "Merry Christmas" would be eligible for Diamond by now. No. "AIWFCIY" is the one eligible for Diamond. Meanwhile Mariah now has 4 albums at 8x platinum or higher - Mariah Carey, Music Box, Merry Christmas, and Daydream. I'm not sure any other woman matches her but will check. I wonder if Emancipation is close?

That article was a great read; and I don't know why Walter is so salty - Mariah is very good about mentioning who she works with during interviews. I don't feel she's ever discredited his hand in the song.
LOL at Roc listening to Drake and Travis.

I know at one point we thought #1s was close to 6x. Did that album and GH just get ruined by streaming, I.e. does something like ‘Vision Of Love’ tend to go to the parent album? Would be so amazing if someday the debut and MC became diamond.

Labels choose which album to credit a song's stream to. My guess is most of Mariah's singles would be credited to their parent album since those are the ones with the most certification potential. #1s has essentially been discontinued because of #1 to Infinity, and there would be no point giving the newer one the streams since it isn't even Gold. The GH did sell well in the end, but it's still only 2x platinum so not close to any major milestones. It certainly makes more sense to give streams to the debut, Daydream, etc.

I just realized the two closest albums to go Diamond...the debut and Merry Christmas both are MC initials. That is some serious ‘it was written’ s**t if I ever saw one.

So back to my post last week; I think All I Want can be added to the list of US and UK simultaneous No. 1 songs. If I'm understanding this right.
The Weeknd – "Blinding Lights", 11 April, 25 April 2020 (two weeks)[97][98][99] Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande – "Rain on Me", 6 June 2020 (one week)[100][101] DaBaby featuring Roddy Ricch – "Rockstar", 13–20 June, 4 July 2020 (three weeks)[102][103][104][105] Cardi B featuring Megan Thee Stallion – "WAP", 19–26 September 2020 (two weeks)[106][107][108] Ariana Grande – "Positions", 31 October 2020 (one week)[109][110]

The way she’s relegated Walter’s contribution to just the bridge.... look who knows BUT, if we’re gonna start penny pinching at who did what I think we must remember- love takes time, dreamlover, hero, anytime you need a friend, Hero, one sweet day, underneath the stars, forever, butterfly, my all, lead the way, HERO! She owes a lot to Walter, he owes a lot to her.
The best part of that article is that her Son likes Drake. He also liked Ariana so maybe to look cool to her kids she’ll collaborate with him too! Just hopefully it won’t be a Christmas tune!

I hope one day TEOM is certified diamond so that when you look at her career the diamond albums are a bit more spread out to echo the longevity of her career.
MC (1990) MB (1993) MC (1994) DD (1995)
TEOM (2005)

But hey it’s way better than the initial #100 placement.

Did that album and GH just get ruined by streaming, I.e. does something like ‘Vision Of Love’ tend to go to the parent album? If a song appears on more than one album, the TEA/SEA from that specific recording* goes toward whichever album sold the most that week when not counting the TEA/SEA from the shared song(s). So yeah, #1s is probably getting eaten up by all the parent albums streaming more. It's kind of ironic because I think it's fairly common for GH sets to take away from the original parent albums (bc fans in a mood to listen to an artist will gravitate toward the thing that has all the hits in one place). But Mariah has so many fan-favorite deep cuts that the listening trends with her are probably different. *If Mariah were to re-record her songs for any reason, the re-recordings would be counted separately, I believe.

The one thing I would have done differently is have the special a week (or even two weeks) earlier, so she would have more time to push it up the chart.

I don't know what you are quoting there; sounds like HITS. That isn't how it works for the RIAA (or Billboard). Let's use "Always Be My Baby" as an example. Whether you stream it from Daydream or from GH, its streams count toward one album that is designated by the label. I assume Sony is having it count toward Daydream, but I could be wrong about the specific album. But yes, if Mariah were to re-record a song, which she did with "AIWFCIY" for MCIIY and "Oh Santa" for the new soundtrack, those count as separate songs.

Jimmy Jam was asked about Mariah in an IG Live interview last night.. he was asked about Michael and Janet in the same question and grouped them all together in his answer.. he said what separates her (and them) from some of the other acts they’ve worked with over the years is that music is as essential to her being as “air and water”. He went on to talk about how she lives and breathe music and how music is always coming to her.
Nice to hear another legendary musician speak on Mariah’s talents as a songwriter and producer.

Love Takes Time is written by Mariah and Ben, Walter is just doing the producing part of it. So definitely Walter cannot take credit for the songwriting for this great song. The same thing go to Dreamlover, Walter did do the co-producing. But this song is written between Mariah and Dave Hall. so definitely Walter also cannot be credited for this great song's songwriting. I think Mariah was really undermined by a lot of her male peers and even her fans or media to her song-writing ability. That is really an injustice to her talent. The facts that 18 of her #1 hits in US and some of her other big hits, she has a hand on writing on all of them, should be a fact that she is the one who is heavily involved in her songwriting process. So please do respect our Queen in that regard!

Walter was nominated again in 1994 and 1998 by himself without Mariah (he had started working with Celine and Michael Bolton during the 1993-94 cycle to be fair) but I'm guessing he submitted songs he worked on and that Mariah co-produced (like Dreamlover and Hero in '94 and Butterfly and My All in '98) on but Mariah didn't get a nomination on her own.

I can't believe Merry Christmas is 8x platinum already- that's incredible!
Love the new interview posted earlier on the page. It's especially great when Mariah elaborates on the process of creating the song,

I hate when people say a popular artist should collab with the current artist o’day because they are it right now. It wouldn’t even sound right. I would prefer a Kendrick Lamar collab over a soccer mom loving Drake one.

I would prefer a Kendrick Lamar collab over a soccer mom loving Drake one. I’m getting the feeling that Drake may be the collab she was discussing on the Apple interview. He has a new album coming out and he obviously respects her from the Emotions sample off his last album. Im here for it. If the song is right, that could be a sure fire 20th #1.
