I fully believe that "AIWFCIY" will be Mariah's signature song (if it isn't already). How many weeks has it accumulated at #1 so far? 4? It is just gonna keep racking them up for years to come. Wow a modern day Nostradamus!! Why is this forum always bringing out such unnecessary catty/sarcastic responses from people? lol Like half the time you post here someone is throwing attitude of some kind. Mariah’s “signature” song has always been up for debate. I remember reading an article years ago discussing the topic. The author (I believe) stated she really didn’t have one while her contemporaries - Whitney, Celine - did. Obviously, their songs are I Will Always Love You and My Heart Will Go On.
A debate commenced whether Mariah’s was Vision of Love or Hero. I always argued VOL was but it’s absolutely incredible that 26 years down the road, this discussion can be put to rest. AIWFCIY is MC’s “signature” song 100 percent. While you may hear I Will Always Love You and My Heart Will Go On now and then on AC radio etc, you cannot escape Mariah post Thanksgiving into the new year EVERY year.

It looked like such a fiery romance. That Aries/Aries combo, honey! 💥 I think, based on the book, the only two men she was truly in love with were Derek and Luis. I even get the sense Nick would’ve gotten even less of a mention if he wasn’t the father of her kids. |

Yeah "AIWFCIY" has certainly grown into her signature song, but it's also essentially the biggest song ever (a few others can lay claim to that, too) so it trumps all signature songs. I don't think "VOL" was ever really her signature song, except among other singers. In terms of the public for awhile it was "Hero" (and "Without You" in Europe) and then "Always Be My Baby" took hold as we got into the 00s. And then "We Belong Together" came along. Now those three would fight it out for her signature song if not for "AIWFCIY." |

Its generational but if you put aside AIWFCIU I would bet We Belong Together would be most associated with Mariah at this point that any of her 90s classics. It was the multi format smash that put her name back on the map and everyone older or younger knows it. Where songs like Hero,Fantasy or Always Be My Baby is more easily identifiable to older people. We Belong Together cuts through ages, genre etc.

When I think of her signature song the first song that immediately pops in my head is Hero. It’s usually her most covered song on competition shows and she usually likes to close her shows with it. I reckon her signature song will depend on each country/market. For example, here in Central America, "Hero" and "Without You" are considered her signature songs, only recently has "All I Want for Christmas is You" started becoming more popular. "We Belong Together" was barely a hit here. |

It definitely depends on where we're talking about. I think at this point she's more associated with songs like "Always Be My Baby" and "We Belong Together" in the US, while she's still most closely closely associated with songs like "Hero" and "Without You" in a lot of the rest of the world.

Some songs just aren't made for that type of show (like "Obsessed"), and Mariah can pick and choose which songs are approved for that type of show. Another element to look at is of course streams. In terms of Spotify streams, her top songs are: 1. AIWFCIY - over 800 million streams 2. We Belong Together - 274 million streams 3. Always Be My Baby - 195 million streams 4. Hero - 138 million streams In terms of YouTube views her top songs are: 1. AIWFCIY - over 800 million views with all video versions combined 2. We Belong Together - 438 million views 3. Without You - around 350 million views with all video versions combined 4. Hero - 275 million views Based on this metric only, "We Belong Together" is clearly her biggest song after "AIWFCIY." |

I’d say after AIWFCIY, We Belong Together is her signature song. I think that matters because of where it came in her career. It came a little later that I think a younger set of fans got introduced to her through that song. She hadn’t had a big hit like that since the Rainbow era (sorry I’m not counting Loverboy as a big hit) and 6 years can be a long time when it comes to young fans aging into music and artists they like. That definitely helped her with younger millennials who maybe were too young when she was huge in the 90s. So older music fans that knew her in the 90s loved that song and know it. But also younger fans are familiar with it since it came out in 2005. After that I’d argue Always Be My Baby and Hero are essentially tied.

As a lamb, I cannot objectively contribute to this signature song analysis. There's too much bias, and I've been around all her eras that I've seen how her songs have impacted. I think because there's so many generations she spans, and countries involved, it really does make it difficult to decide on just one. Competition shows don't highlight many Mariah songs because NOBODY dares try to hit some of her more known songs - Emotions, Vision of Love, etc., or that whistle. Mariah's legacy will be her overall #1's record (which includes AIWFCIY), her whistle register, and her diva persona.
