This is a really good interview. She talks about the Vegas show, what went down with her last few albums at Def Jam (sort of), and her future career plans (new album, acting, Vegas & Beacon residencies): www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/posts/la-et-ms-mariah-carey-next-chapter-las-vegas-20150512-story.htmlWhy do I have the feeling she was hinting at Beyoncé and the surprise release as the concept that was stolen from her? Anyway, I hope L.A. Reid and her kind of have snapped out of whatever they were on when they went with "Infinity" to lead off this project; actually, I hope L.A. Reid pairs her up with some good collaborators for the next record. Hopefully "Infinity" was just a one-off and that her next album won't have any of that shit, especially after the glorious Chanteuse.

The Vegas air is known for not being kind to a singer's vocals. Hopefully, she takes care of herself and recovers soon.

I have a feeling it was the Beyonce thing, too. But how could the concept have been "lifted"? If it was a secret, how could anyone have known enough about it to steal the idea?

Fans loved the last two projects but they didn’t perform as well as you’ve been used to.Well “Memoirs” at least [Island Def Jam] got one hit out of it. They did OK. But even with my Christmas album [2010’s “Merry Christmas II You], they didn’t do what they should have done with it. But I don’t want to sit here and rag on them. That experience must have frustrated you.You can’t succeed without the company. The company has to be behind you on every level and if it’s not coming from the top it’s just not going to happen. Especially for an artist that requires … to move me from A to B is a lot, you know what I mean? It requires a plan, this and that. I didn’t have proper management in place, or any of those things. I had a great contract, but nobody was implementing those things. And the company wasn’t where I belonged anymore, unfortunately. It’s like you put everything into something and you put it into someone else’s hands and you can’t help it. It’s upsetting. Ugh, lame. She even threw MCIIY in there? That thing was promoted wonderfully. A label can't be expected to keep the same amount of promo in place each time an album is delayed; they lost money on every delay. That part is on Mariah, and she needs to own it. She also can't blame the label for her not having proper management.

I doubt it was the Beyonce thing Mariah claims was stolen; Mariah isn't a big enough name in this current musical climate to pull off that type of release. Plus, what "visuals" did Beyonce take from Mariah?

Really great interview and YAS at the "Can't Let Go" shout out. She rarely does that any more but its CLEAR fans want it. I'm also interested at her doing "intimate" shows for the album cuts. I'd DIE to hear "The Wind", "And You Don't Remember", and "All I Ever Wanted" (lol) live. I know a dream.
And finally YAS at her doing the same thing we ALL do is binge watch her vids on YouTube. A lot of artists do not do that.

Mariah loves Beyoncé, and dropping a surprise visual record does not sound like something she'd do. Aside from the Fabtasy-esque XO video, which seemed like an homage more than anything, none of the videos seemed like something Mariah would attempt.
I'm wondering who it could be about, but can't put my finger on it.

My first guess was that she is still harping on the J Lo thing but I am pretty sure they have kissed and made up. I remember Mariah bopping to J. Lo's performance back when she was a guest judge and she looked genuinely pleased to see her on stage. Plus, to my knowledge, it wasn't actually J. Lo who stole the Firecracker sample and nothing else was stolen, besides the sample and the idea to have a rapper on the track.

I need this "lifting" of the concept etc to get into the press so we can get more ideas. I think it's something far more recent than 2013 - I'm talking it's been released, or about to be released, this year.

The reason I think she's hinting at Beyoncé is because of the way she phrased her comment. It sounds like she's talking about something fairly recent, plus she was careful not reveal anything about this because that would be "too big a scandal" (we know the J.Lo/Tommy-"Loverboy" mess happened over 15 years ago and practically everyone is aware of it by now; it wouldn't be surprising or a "scandal"). Notice how she used the word "visual," as well... that was almost a dead giveaway IMO. Plus, Mariah says that person jacked the entire concept, visual and name of the project (we've known she had a self-titled concept for the title in mind for a while and she sort of stuck with that title eventually: Me. I Am Mariah).

Not sure it is Beyoncé. I was kinda thinking Katy Perry because she ripped of Thirsty with that Black Widow song she "wrote" for Rita Ora. But then I don't know how the "visual" plays into it. But what could it be? The biggest project that fit the description is Beyoncé's project.

She is probably talking about Ariana Grande and all the mess associated with comparisons. That is the only person I can think that makes sense in the current climate.

It is not Beyoncé. And here's why....on top of them being friends, the whole Beyoncé visual concept is NOT Mariah's style in the slightest, and also Beyoncé wished Mariah happy birthday last year, 3 months AFTER Bey had already released her album. To which Mariah replied: "Thank you Beyonce, even though I don't have birthdays, only anniversaries (lol!), still you're always so generous! Your talent is massive as the beauty of your heart." She would've never wrote that even less replied to Beyoncé if it is Bey who she's referring to. Case closed....urrr well atleast on the Beyoncé speculation. Ok, next potential victim! We can't rest until we figure this out...I'll take first shift.

Re-reading it now, it does sound like she's talking about JLo. I think she said it would be too big a scandal just because she doesn't want to rehash an argument over a song that has been going for almost 15 years.

The LA Reid challenge for the next album will be getting songs from her that sound like Mariah, but also sound different. That to me is a big part of why #Beautiful worked so well and remains her biggest hit since Obsessed. Those songs worked because they don't really resemble any sound in her catalog.
I think that is the only way she is going to have a shot at getting played on radio is thinking outside the box. I think people are tired of similar leaning songs.

It's not J. Lo! I think this is something that has happened since MIAM has been released, like as she's working on a follow up. Notice she gives that answer when asked about NEW material - this is not a 2014 thing. And if it is, it's from the end of the year.
What are the major releases this year so far, and slated for the near future?

We can't rest until we figure this out...I'll take first shift. I'll take the graveyard shift, as the resident night owl. #midnightsniper Seriously, the way she stated it, I think it is clear we're dealing with something more recent than J. Lo. Mariah said this person literally stole the whole idea; as Ivy Leegue™ pointed out, J. Lo only jacked the sample idea and the use of Ja Rule. Mariah still used the same intended title and lyrics for "Loverboy." For all reasons stated, plus a few more, Bey is not it...it has to be someone who would have access either because of working with the same people Mariah has worked with or because of being on the same label and being able to snatch things via a shared label contact. And it likely happened after LA Reid left, which might be a reason why Mariah felt IDJ wasn't 'behind' her completely anymore. (note, this is not speaking in terms of promotion/lack thereof, of which Mariah herself must take on some of the blame; but I think if this swagger jacking happened because of someone at IDJ, it's another reason why Mariah shifts the blame onto them.) ---------------- On another note, about a year or so ago someone posted...I think it was a Rolling Stone article? From when Mariah had first come out. The writer was talking about how Sony was clearly investing so much in her, but even back then, toward the end of the interview she was hinting she and the label were at odds in terms of production. She was rehearsing one of her songs and the writer pointed out that despite her acknowledging that the label was making the decisions it thought would sell the most, she still kept trying to perfect that song with an arrangement that was different from the one on record. I want to say it was Someday, but it might have been Vision of Love. Does anyone recall what I'm talking about?
