www.billboard.com/articles/news/5915773/frozen-earns-most-weeks-at-no-1-for-a-soundtrack-since-titanic'Frozen' Earns Most Weeks At No. 1 For A Soundtrack Since 'Titanic' By Keith Caulfield, L.A. | February 26, 2014 Meanwhile, Pharrell's "Happy" continues to rule the Digital Songs chart. Disney's unstoppable soundtrack to "Frozen" returns to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, collecting its fifth nonconsecutive week atop the list. "Frozen" has now earned the most weeks at No. 1 for a soundtrack since "Titanic" racked up 16 straight weeks at No. 1 in 1998. It ruled the list on the charts dated Jan. 24 through May 9 that year. This week's Billboard 200 reflects the tracking week ending Feb. 23, where the "Frozen" album sold 89,000 copies (down 11%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. A week ago, it was No. 2 with 100,000. Last week's No. 1 album, Eric Church's "The Outsiders," falls to No. 2 in its second week with 74,000 (down 74%). Since the Billboard 200 began using SoundScan sales data on May 25, 1991, only five soundtracks have spent at least five weeks at No. 1: "Frozen," "Titanic," "Waiting to Exhale" (five weeks in 1996), "The Lion King" (10 weeks in 1994 and 1995) and "The Bodyguard" (20 weeks in 1992 and 1993). (The last film soundtrack to net four weeks at No. 1 was "Bad Boys II" in 2003.) The all-time champ for the most weeks at No. 1 for a soundtrack in the history of the Billboard 200 is "West Side Story," with 54 weeks at No. 1 in 1962 and 1963. (It also owns the record for the most weeks at No. 1 for any album.) The "Frozen" soundtrack is currently in its 13th week on the Billboard 200, and has spent the last eight straight weeks lodged in one of the top two positions. The last album to spend more time within the top two rungs was Taylor Swift's "Red," which notched 10 weeks in the region between Nov. 10, 2012, and Jan. 12, 2013. Country singer Cole Swindell owns this week's highest new entry on the Billboard 200. His self-titled debut album bows at No. 3 with 63,000. On the Top Country Albums chart, it starts at No. 2, behind Church's "The Outsiders." Swindell's current single, "Chillin' It," hit No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart a week ago. Over on the Country Airplay chart, it rises 3-2 this week. The "Now 49" compilation dips 3-4 on the Billboard 200 with 45,000 (down 41%), Beyonce's self-titled album falls 4-5 with 35,000 (down 27%), and Lorde's "Pure Heroine" rises 7-6 with 30,000 (down 21%). Katy Perry's "PRISM" is up 9-7 with 26,000 (down 17%), while Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" descends 5-8 with 23,000 (down 51%). Rock band Issues nabs a No. 9 entry with its self-titled debut album, as it starts with 22,000 sold. It follows the group's EP, "Black Diamonds," which has sold 41,000 copies since its release in 2012. Issues, which is signed to the rock-focused record label Rise Records, tallies the third top 10 set for Rise. It follows Of Mice & Men's "Restoring Force" (No. 4 on the Feb. 15 chart) and Sleeping With Sirens' "Feel" (No. 3 on the June 22, 2013, chart). Toni Braxton and Babyface close out the top 10 this week, as the duo's "Love, Marriage & Divorce" slides 8-10 with 21,000 (down 37%). After only three weeks in release, the album's sales stand at 121,000 -- not much less than the cumulative sales of Braxton's last studio release, 2010's Pulse (156,000). Over on the Digital Songs chart, Pharrell's "Happy" continues to rule at No. 1 for a second week, selling 402,000 downloads (up 22%). It's the biggest sales week for a song outside of the Christmas season since last September, when Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" flew to No. 1 with 477,000 (week ending Sept. 15). That was the week Cyrus' controversial video for "Wrecking Ball" debuted, hitting YouTube and Vevo on Sept. 9. Katy Perry's "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J, holds at No. 2 this week with 251,000 (down 9%). In fact, all of the top five songs this week are stationary. Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty," featuring 2 Chainz, is No. 3 (247,000; down 7%); John Legend's "All of Me" holds at No. 4 (203,000; though up by 23%); and Bastille's "Pompeii" is steady at No. 5 (142,000; down 3%). Aloe Blacc's "The Man" rises 8-6 with 133,000 (up 3%), Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" climbs 9-7 with 125,000 (though it’s down 2%), and a Great Big World & Christina Aguilera's "Say Something" falls 6-8 with 119,000 (down 18%). Pitbull's "Timber," featuring Ke$ha, rises 10-9 with 112,000 (down 9%), and Lorde's "Team" returns to the top 10, ascending 11-10 with 111,000 (down 6%). Overall album sales during this past chart week (ending Feb. 23) totaled 4.8 million units, down 11% compared with the sum last week (5.4 million) and down 12% compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5.5 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 37.7 million, down 15% compared with the same total at this point last year (44.6 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 24.4 million downloads, down 4% compared with last week (25.4 million) and down 9% stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (26.9 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 201.1 million, down 12% compared with the same total at this point last year (227.3 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" rose to No. 1 for the first time, selling 95,000 copies (up 96%). The chart's highest debut was Atoms for Peace's "Amok," at No. 2, with 50,000.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/chart-watch-low-american-idol-180603971.htmlChart Watch: A New Low For “American Idol” By Paul Grein, Yahoo MusicCandice Glover’s "Music Speaks" sold just 19K copies in its first week. That's the lowest first-week sales tally for the debut album by an "American Idol" winner in the show's 12-year history. The old record was set in 2010 when Lee DeWyze's "Live It Up" sold 39K copies in its first week. "Music Speaks" enters The Billboard 200 at #14. That's a bit higher than "Live It Up," which debuted and peaked at #19. "Idol's" post-DeWyze revival with Scotty McCreery and Phillip Phillips, both of whose debut albums started strongly and sold well over time, appears to have stalled. A technical glitch in the iTunes store may have cost Glover some sales. According to Hits Magazine, 11K pre-orders of the album were marked as fulfilled in November, even though the album hadn't been delivered. If any of those 11K customers still wanted the album three months later, they would have had to place the order again. That's not an insurmountable hurdle if you really want something, but it gives a customer an easy out if their interest has waned. It also didn't help that the Idol bosses waited so long to release Glover's album. Glover was named the Season 12 winner on May 16. This nine-month wait between Glover's coronation and the release of her debut album is the longest in "Idol" history. It tops the eight-month lag between Kelly Clarkson's coronation as the first Idol and the release of her first album, "Thankful." Since then, the lag has more typically been in the six month range. "Idol's" TV ratings have been trending down for several years. "The Voice" has eclipsed "Idol" in buzz. The NBC show won an Emmy last year for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program—an award that "Idol" never won in its heyday (and now probably never will). Here are the first-week sales tallies of the first post-coronation albums by each of the "Idol" winners. They're shown from the biggest first week on down: Ruben Studdard's "Soulful" (417K), Carrie Underwood's "Some Hearts" (315K), Taylor Hicks' "Taylor Hicks" (298K), Kelly Clarkson's "Thankful" (297K), David Cook's "David Cook" (280K), Fantasia's "Free Yourself" (240K), Scotty McCreery's "Clear As Day" (197K), Phillip Phillips' "World From The Side Of The Moon" (169K), Jordin Sparks' "Jordin Sparks" (119K), Kris Allen's "Kris Allen" (80K), Lee DeWyze's "Live It Up" (39K), Candice Glover's "Music Speaks" (19K). Here's the stats from elsewhere on the chart: The "Frozen" soundtrack returns to #1 for a fifth week on top. That's the longest run by any soundtrack since "Titanic" logged 16 weeks on top in 1998. (Something "frozen" also played a part in that movie, as I recall.) "Frozen" is #1 on Top Soundtracks for the 13th week. The movie was in the top 10 at the box-office for the 13th weekend. "Frozen" is now the fourth highest-grossing animated movie since 1982, when boxofficemojo.com starting tracking box-office data. Among animated non-sequels, it's second only to "The Lion King." Eric Church's "The Outsiders" dips from #1 to #2. It's #1 on Top Country Albums for the second week. Country singer Cole Swindell'seponymous debut album is the week's top new entry at #3. The album sold 42K digital copies, which puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums. Swindell's big hit, "Chillin' It," reached #1 on Hot Country Songs last week. Lorde's "Pure Heroine" inches up from #7 to #6. The album tops the 1 million mark in U.S. sales this week. Lorde's Grammy-winning breakthrough smash, "Royals," has sold 5,234,000 copies. Her follow-up, "Team," is up to 1,550,000. Pharrell Williams's "Happy" sold 402K copies, which puts it at #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the second week. That's the highest weekly sales tally so far this year; the highest outside of Christmas week (when sales traditionally swell) since September, when Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" blew up (477K). Will "Happy" move up to #1 on the Hot 100, or will "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J grab a fifth week on top? You'll find out later today when we post my Songs blogs. Country album sales this week: www.roughstock.com/blog/country-album-chart-news-the-week-of-february-26-2014-cole-swindell-s-big-debut-eric-church-still-1-info-on-scotty-hunter-carrie-taylor-s-latest-albumsCountry Album Chart News: The Week of February 26, 2014: Cole Swindell's Big Debut, Eric Church Still #1; Info on Scotty, Hunter, Carrie & Taylor's Latest Albums By: Matt Bjorke Last Updated: February 26, 2014 Eric Church Holds onto #1 for a second week but newcomer Cole Swindell sets bar for debut releases in 2014 with his self-titled Warner Bros. Nashville album. Eric Church managed to maintain the pole position this week with a late push (to 74k sold) to keep newcomer Cole Swindell (“Chillin’ It”) from the #1 position. Still, 63k albums sold in his first week out with only one hit to his credit is a remarkable debut for Cole Swindell, and his self-titled album, in any year of this post-digital music revolution. It’s indeed the biggest debut album launch for a country artist since Florida Georgia Line in 2012 (who also moved 63k albums their first week of release). In fact, these numbers are tied for the best debut #s since Scotty McCreery’s Clear As Day dropped with 197,000 albums sold in its first week in the fall of 2011. Cole’s buddy Luke Bryan sits at #3 with sales of 15k bringing the album to 1.668 million sold, just ahead of Florida Georgia Line’s Here’s To The Good Times (which has a deluxe edition titled “This Is How We Roll” that features a single featuring Luke Bryan and was co-written by Cole Swindell). Rounding out the Top 5 is Jennifer Nettles with That Girl. The album has now sold 120k in 6 weeks and gives Georgia natives 4 of the Top 5 Country album slots. Vocal Group Home Free’s “Crazy Life” saw its physical release impact the chart giving the group a second week on our Top 10 chart. Jason Aldean returns to #6 after sliding down the chart last week. His Night Train album has sold nearly 1.6 million copies to date while Kasey Musgraves sits at #7 with Same Trailer Different Park has moved 367k to date. #8’s placeholder is Blake Shelton’s Based On A True Story, with 1.16 million albums sold to date (48 weeks). Home Free’s Crazy Life sits at #9 and “The Sing-Off” winners have enjoyed two weeks on this chart with 16k total in the 4 weeks on this chart. The group’s physical CD release of the album is the reason for their resurgence on the chart this week (they only sold 663 downloads last week). Rounding out the Top 10 is Johnny Cash’s Legend of Johnny Cash, a long-time top-seller which has now moved 3.116 million copies and features tracks from his time with American Recordings (I.E. his late-career and last recordings). Hunter Hayes, Carrie Underwood, Scotty McCreery, Cassadee Pope, and Danielle Bradbery lead the notable albums this week. Hunter Hayes and Taylor Swift make return appearances in our notables chart rundown this week with his Platinum self-titled/Encore album and her 4x Platinum RED, respectively. Scotty McCreery’s 205k-plus selling See You Tonight continues to find fans while Eric Paslay has now sold 17,000 copies of his debut in 3 weeks on this chart (Lead single “Friday Night” hit #1 and is close to GOLD on the Digital single sales chart). Meanwhile Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away returns to this chart with sales now nearly 1.65 million. Note: We should have info on Danielle Bradbery and Cassadee Pope later today. 3/8 Billboard 200: www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/5923000/chart-moves-metallicas-best-selling-black-album-approaches-16-million-inChart Moves: Metallica's Best-Selling Black Album Approaches 16 Million in Sales By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | February 28, 2014 This week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, the soundtrack to "Frozen" returned to No. 1 for a fifth nonconsecutive week, marking the longest run at No. 1 for a soundtrack since 1998. The highest debut this week was owned by Cole Swindell's self-titled album, tallying him the highest debut for a new male country artist since Scotty McCreery in 2011. Let's take a look at some of movers and shakers outside the top 10 of the chart this week… -- Lake Street Dive, "Bad Self Portraits" (No. 18): Two weeks after appearing in our weekly Bubbling Under feature, the rock quartet collects its best week yet with the arrival of its new album (15,000 sold). The debut nearly bests the to-date sum of its most successful release, the "Fun Machine" EP, with 18,000 sold. -- We Are the In Crowd, "Weird Kids" (No. 29): The rock band nabs its best week ever on the Billboard 200, selling 10,000 copies in its first week of its second album. The group's first full-length, "Best Intentions" in 2011, topped out at No. 122, with a weekly high of 3,000 (its debut frame). -- Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, "Lent At Ephesus" (No. 67): In its second week on the chart, "Lent At Ephesus" slips 49-67 with 5,000 sold, bringing its total to 13,000. It's the third No. 1 album on the Traditional Classical Albums chart for the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles -- their entire output of releases. Last year's "Angels and Saints at Ephesus" spent 13 weeks at No. 1, and was the year's second biggest selling traditional classical set. -- AC/DC, "Back In Black" (No. 123): Absent from the list since the Aug. 31, 2013-dated chart, the band's best-selling album returns to the list (up by 49%). First released on Atlantic Records in 1980, it was reissued on Columbia Records in 2003. The combined SoundScan-era (1991-present) sales of the two sets stand at 7.1 million. -- Metallica, "Metallica" (No. 146): At its current rate of sales (about 2,000 to 3,000 per week), this album -- first released in 1991 -- should surpass 16 million in about three or four months. The set (often referred to as "The Black Album") is already the best-selling album of the SoundScan era, and has been since the week ending Dec. 20, 2009. -- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, "Greatest Hits" (No. 170): Released in 1993, the set is the fifth-largest selling greatest hits album of the SoundScan era, with 8.2 million sold. 4/5 of the top five biggest hits sets are all by rock acts, with Bob Marley's "Legend" (No. 2) the only outlier.

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/5922991/lordes-pure-heroine-hits-1-million-in-salesLorde's 'Pure Heroine' Hits 1 Million in Sales By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | February 28, 2014 Lorde's "Pure Heroine" album crosses the 1 million sales mark, becoming the first debut set to do so since last October. The set rises 7-6 on the Billboard 200 chart this week, selling another 30,000 copies in the week ending Feb. 23, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its total sales stand at 1.01 million. Hunter Hayes' self-titled album was the last debut set to reach a million, crossing the threshold in the week ending Oct. 27, 2013. Further, Lorde is the first woman to have her debut album hit a million in sales since April 2011, when Adele's "19" cleared 1 million (week ending April 3). "Pure Heroine" is the second album by a woman this year to reach 1 million, following Katy Perry's "PRISM" (week ending Jan. 5). In 2013, there were just 13 albums that sold a million copies, and only one by a woman: Beyonce's self-titled album. "Beyonce" arrived Dec. 13, which means that had Beyonce not released her surprise album, 2013 wouldn't have had a million-seller by a female artist. As for "Pure Heroine," the album has yet to leave the top 20 of the Billboard 200 since its debut on the chart dated Oct. 19, 2013. It has resided in the top 10 for 16 non-consecutive weeks, including the last nine in a row. The album's current radio single, "Team," rises to a new peak (climbing 9-7) on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. It follows her No. 1 smash "Royals," which spent nine weeks at No. 1 in 2013. The next single from "Pure Heroine" will be "Glory and Gore," which debuts at No. 88 on the Hot 100 this week. Billboard first reported that "Tennis Court" would be the third single, per Republic Records, but the label has since switched its plan to "Glory and Gore." (Additional reporting by Gary Trust)

There were so many people ready to dismiss Lorde as a one hit wonder but she's proving them wrong. Funny how I think she can sound very similar to Lana Del Rey but Lana wasn't able to break out in the same way.
