music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/chart-watch-pharrell-happy-despite-oscar-loss-020930488.htmlChart Watch: Pharrell “Happy” Despite Oscar Loss By Paul Grein 1 hour ago Yahoo Music Pharrell Williams's "Happy" tops the Hot 100 for the second straight week. The song sold 413K copies, up from 402K last week. It's the first song to sell at least 400K copies two weeks running since Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" (which featured Williams, along with T.I.). That smash topped 400K for three consecutive weeks (and four weeks overall) last summer. Remarkably, sales for "Happy" have increased every single week since the week ending Dec. 8. That's 12 consecutive week-over-week sales increases. Will it top itself again next week—which will be the first full week following Pharrell's terrific Oscar night performance? Place your bets. "Happy" tops the 2 million mark in U.S. sales this week. The song also reaches #1 on Radio Songs (which measures only radio airplay) in its sixth week on that chart. Only two other songs since January 2010 have shot to #1 on that chart in just six weeks: Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" and "The Monster" by Eminem featuring Rihanna. "Happy" logs its fourth week at #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. The big mystery about "Happy" is why such an infectious and irresistable song took so long to break big. The song just sat there for six months before it started to take off. "Happy" was released in June, two weeks before the release of the animated movie "Despicable Me 2," in which it was featured. But the song didn't crack 10K in weekly sales until the week ending Dec. 22. Part of the explanation is that the two megahits on which Williams was featured last year—"Blurred Lines" and Daft Punk's "Get Lucky"—first had to subside. And that took a very long time. Another oddity: The "Despicable Me 2" soundtrack (which contains "Happy") has done poorly (given that it has spawned such a massive hit). The soundtrack has sold only 41K copies as of this week. Williams' own album, "GIRL," (which also contains "Happy") is set to enter The Billboard 200 next week at #2 or #3 with sales of about 85K. (I expected much more given Pharrell's red-hot status.) "Happy" was entered in the Grammy process last year in the category of Best Song Written for Visual Media. It wasn't even nominated. That wasn't really a surprise, given its minimal impact at the time. (Luckily, it wasn't entered for Record or Song of the Year or Best Pop Solo Performance, so it will be eligible for those prizes next year.) "Happy" also returns to #1 on the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart. The song has had three separate runs at #1 in the U.K. It's the first song to achieve that feat since Guy Mitchell's "Singing The Blues" in 1957. Here's a little more U.K. trivia. "Happy" is Williams' third million-seller in the U.K., following "Get Lucky" and "Blurred Lines." Only two other acts in U.K. history have had three or more million-sellers. The Beatles lead with six. (In addition, Paul McCartney and John Lennon each had one more post-Beatles million-seller). Rihanna has also had three. Bastille's "Pompeii" finally cracks the top five in its 29th week. It jumps from #6 to #5. (Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" holds the record for the longest slog to finally crack the top five—42 weeks.) "Pompeii" tops the 2 million mark in U.S. sales this week. Lorde's "Team" jumps from #7 to #6. And her new "Glory And Gore" leaps from #88 to #68 in its second week. The History Channel is featuring the latter song in promos for its "Vikings" series, which began its second season on Feb. 27. "Drunk In Love" by Beyonce featuring Jay Z drops from #5 to #7. The song tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. Here's a recap of this week's top 10 songs. The Top Five: Pharrell Williams's "Happy" holds at #1 for the second week in its ninth week on the chart. This is its fifth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (413K) … "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J holds at #2 for the second week its 24th week on the chart. This is its ninth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #3 (212K) … "Talk Dirty" by Jason Derulo featuring 2 Chainz holds at #3 for the fourth week in its 11th week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #2 (217K) … John Legend's "All Of Me" holds at #4 for the second week in its 21st week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #4 (198K) … Bastille's "Pompeii" jumps from #6 to #5 in its 29th week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #6 (128K). The Second Five: Lorde's "Team" jumps from #7 to #6 in its 23rd week on the chart. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #9 (101K) …. "Drunk In Love" by Beyonce featuring Jay Z drops from #5 to #7 in its 11th week on the chart. This is its fifth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #11 (94K) … OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" rebounds from #9 to #8 in its 37th week on the chart. This is its 19th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #13 (76K) …. "Say Something" by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera dips from #8 to #9 in its 17th week on the chart. This is its 14th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #8 (110K) … "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha holds at #10 for the second week in its 21st week on the chart. This is its 16th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #10 (95K). Aloe Blacc's "The Man," which ranked #13 last week, is expected to move up this week. Digital sales rank: #7 (120K). The song samples Elton John's "Your Song," which peaked at #8 in 1971. So there's a good chance that Blacc's record will surpass the peak of Elton's. Stay tuned. Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" jumps from #18 to #17 in its 14th week. The song won an Oscar as Original Song. Will it crack the top 10 next week? Place your bets. Digital sales rank: #5 (130K). The Chainsmokers's "#Selfie" is the week's top new entry at #55. (That is what you call a timely title.) The Chainsmokers are a New York City-based DJ/producer duo consisting of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall. Justin Timberlake's "Not A Bad Thing" debuts at #65. It's vying to become the third top 40 hit from "The 20/20 Experience (2 of 2)." Timberlake performed the song on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on Feb. 21. Two songs reach the 5 million mark in U.S. digital sales this week. This brings the number of 5 million-sellers to an even 50. The first is Phillip Phillips's "Home." It's the best-selling song by any contestant in "American Idol" history. The second is fun.'s "Some Nights." It's fun.'s second song to reach this plateau, following "We Are Young" (featuring Janelle Monae). fun. is just the fourth group or duo to land two 5 million-sellers. The New York trio follows the Black Eyed Peas, LMFAO and Maroon 5. Eminem's "Rap God" tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. The song reached #7 on the Hot 100. To My Readers: I'll have a separate Chart Watch report on this week's key movers and debuts on the Hot 100 later today. I won't recap the top 10 in that second report. It will be fresh material.

Chart Watch: The Perfectly Timed “Selfie” By Paul Grein, Yahoo Music
The Chainsmokers' "#Selfie" is the top new entry on this week's Hot 100 at #55. The song debuts just days after Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres engineered the most star-studded selfie of all time on the Academy Awards. The Chainsmokers are a New York City-based DJ/producer duo consisting of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall.
"#Selfie" sold 53K digital copies this week, which represents a 114% increase over last week's total of 25K. The song’s official video has scored more than 4 million YouTube views.
Hits Magazine describes the track as "a send-up of self-obsessed club kids that’s reminiscent of Frank and Moon Zappa’s ’80s hit 'Valley Girl.'" That song reached #32 in September 1982.
For sheer speediness in getting on top of a cresting cultural phenomenon, "#Selfie" rivals Ray Stevens' 1974 hit "The Streak," which was climbing to #1 as that fad was spreading across the country. (You may recall that that phenomenon also made it to that year's Oscar telecast, as a streaker interrupted the proceedings.)
This week's big chart news is Pharrell Williams's "Happy" reaching a new sales peak (413K). This is the 12th consecutive week that the sales of "Happy" have increased over the week before. I covered this, and the rest of the top 10 action, in a Chart Watch blog that we posted Wednesday. If you missed it, here's a link. This blog is a look at key movers and debuts below the top 10.
Aloe Blacc's "The Man" holds at #13 for the second week in its 10th week. Digital sales rank: #7 (120K). The song samples Elton John's "Your Song," which peaked at #8 in 1971 … "Show Me" by Kid Ink featuring Chris Brown jumps from #16 to #14 in its 17th week … Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" jumps from #18 to #17 in its 14th week. Digital sales rank: #5 (130K). The song won an Oscar as Original Song. Will it crack the top 10 next week? Place your bets.
"My Hitta" by YG featuring Jeezy & Rich Homie Quan jumps from #22 to #19 in its 22nd week, matching its highest ranking to date … Beyonce's "Partition" vaults from #97 to #23 in its eighth week. This is the second top 30 hit from the best-selling "Beyonce" album … "Paranoid" by Ty Dolla $ign featuring B.o.B jumps from #33 to #29 in its 11th week … Martin Garrix's instrumental hit "Animals" jumps from #36 to #31 in its 24th week. .
Brantley Gilbert's "Bottoms Up" jumps from #34 to #32 in its 11th week. The song jumps to #1 on Hot Country Songs, displacing Cole Swindell's "Chillin' It." It's Gilbert's third #1 country hit, following "Country Must Be Country Wide" and "You Don't Know Her Like I Do" … Dierks Bentley lands his seventh top 40 hit on the Hot 100 as "I Hold On" jumps from #53 to #40 in its 11th week. It's from Bentley's album "Riser," which enters The Billboard 200 at #6 this week … Christina Perri's "Human" jumps from #67 to #51 in its fourth week … "This Is How We Roll" by Florida Georgia Line featuring Luke Bryan jumps from #68 to #56 in its fourth week.
ScHoolboy Q's "Man Of The Year" leaps from #81 to #62 in its third week. The rapper's earlier hit "Collard Greens" (featuring Kendrick Lamar) re-enters the chart at #94. It has climbed as high as #92. Both songs are from ScHoolboy Q's "Oxymoron," which enters The Billboard 200 at #1 this week with sales of 139K. That's the third-best one-week sales tally so far this year.
Justin Timberlake's "Not A Bad Thing" is the week's second highest new entry at #65. It's vying to become the third top 40 hit from "The 20/20 Experience (2 of 2)." Timberlake performed the song on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on Feb. 21 … Lorde's "Glory And Gore" leaps from #88 to #68 in its second week. The History Channel is featuring the song in promos for its "Vikings" series, which began its second season on Feb. 27 … Rico Love's "They Don't Know" jumps from #87 to #73 in its sixth week.
Brett Eldredge's "Beat Of The Music" jumps from #89 to #80 in its fourth week … Hillsong United's "Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)" jumps from #92 to #83 in its sixth week … "La La La" by Naughty Boy featuring Sam Smith jumps from #98 to #85 in its second week.
"Wild Wild Love" by Pitbull featuring G.R.L. debuts at #89. It's the fifth "Wild Wild" song to make the Hot 100. Talking Heads' "Wild Wild Life" reached #25 in 1986. Escape Club's "Wild, Wild West" hit #1 in 1988. Kool Moe Dee's "Wild, Wild West" hit #62 in 1988. "Wild Wild West" by Will Smith featuring Dru Hill & Kool Moe Dee (which borrows from Kool Moe Dee's 1988 song) hit #1 in 1999.
Fitz & the Tantrums' "The Walker" debuts at #93. It's from the group's second studio album "More Than Just A Dream," which is due May 7.
Paramore's "Ain't It Fun" debuts at #96. It's the second Hot 100 single from the group's fourth studio album, "Paramore" … Miranda Lambert's "Automatic" re-enters the chart at #97. It debuted at #63 two weeks ago … Neon Trees' "Sleeping With A Friend" debuts at #100. It's from the group's upcoming third studio album, "Pop Psychology."

Happy is coming for Lose Yourself's 12 weeks at #1 wig (the difference is that LS won the oscar, right? I don't remember ). Yes, and I believe it was the first (and probably only) rap song to win it. Oh you missed this perfection in 2005:

Only on pulse can people be so unhappy about a song titled "Happy."

"Happy" is going to be #1 for awhile. The song that is in the top 10 I wish would go number #1 is Beyonce's "Drunk In Love". It only peaked at #2 after the amazing Grammy performance.

The Hot 100 is posted here: acharts.us/us_singles_top_100Notes for this week 1. We will see Happy on top for a long time. 2. The top 10 hasn't changed for 2-3 weeks. 3. Future top 10 hits: The Man, Let It Go, Best Day Of My Life. 4. Partition makes a huge jump from 97 - 23. 5. Radioactive will never die 5.5. Sail will never die. 6. Animals is still climbing. 7. Chris Brown is approaching his next top 40 hit, and will probably wait untill 2015 to announce that his album comes out in 2016 when all of the songs have already been released. 8. #selfie officaly becomes Pulse's most hated track of 2014. 9. Justin Timberlake's "new" song is kinda floping along with pitbull's, and he will probably yet again, re-release Global Warning. 10. Lorde's new single is going to hit the top 40 soon. 11. Imagine Dragons have had a song on every weekly chart from mid 2012 to probably mid 2015, when On Top of the World gets off the chart. 12. La La La will become a hit in the U.S. 13. After Fitz and The Tantrums failed to get on the hot 100 with Out of My League (even with the album title being lyerics from that song). They hit it fairly easy with "The Walker". 14. Paramore and Neon Tress enter. 15. I don't like about 50% of these songs.

I think it's too early to say if they're flopping or not, because they only just got release. Especially Pitbull, since he doesn't seem to have a very big fanbase, and I'm sure some of his big hits started out low in the past.

I enjoy #selfie.

where are these singles purchased on the singles sales charts... I know Wal-mart has Hunter Hayes, One Direction, Adele, and Avril Lavigne...but no ther stores that carry CDs or vinyl seem to have the rest. I have even checked on Amazon for availability and some I find as Imports but those dont get counted on Billboard sales charts. Anyone have a site they know where to find new physical singles for sale.

weird to see Katy Perry in the 70's - 80's region w/ a song under 20 weeks and falling out.

I believe that Billboard counts the sales of digital EP's/remix bundles on the Singles Sales chart, so some of the stuff that you see there isn't actually available in any physical format in the US.
