Yesssssssssss. I really never expected that I would become a fan of theirs but I think I am even more into them than ZAYN. Is that even possible?!  I know it's balladesque but they should REALLY release Right Now next. If not, Happily? I'm pissed that they didn't release Through The Dark early to continue riding that Mumford wave but I think that ship has sailed for them. Anyway, back to this song. GREAT song and a really cool, artsy video. I like the way it was shot. I still have a hard time distinguishing who is singing without watching them. Well, except for Zayn and his poor excuse for high notes. Someone needs to tell that boy that you don't have to sound like your balls are in a vice to hit high notes. They are so weak and unsupported. That's my only gripe with the group. Liam should just sing everything, basically. Harry is not bad, but Louis is a serious weak link and Niall doesn't exist. Whenever he sings, he sounds so...uncommitted, like he can barely get the words out before retreating back into the shadows where he belongs. |

The biggest mistake they've ever made is not making "Summer Love" (with a radio edit removing louis verse) a single. Although that is one of their MANY mistakes, Rock Me was an obvious smash that should have been released, and imo is their BIGGEST mistake by FAR! |

Or, with this album, "You & I" being better than "Happily." I honestly think the label is trying too hard to get them to appeal to an older market by releasing slower songs as singles. While I understand why they're doing this, and I do think it's necessary, it really is leaving behind a lot of potential smashes that could be much more successful and probably generate an even larger fan base for 1D. I would argue a good chunk of Midnight Memories is single material...Diana, DFWYB, Strong, Happily, TTD, SG, LWL, and BTW all could be singles in my opinion. I would say the same for their second album with CC, LFK, HA, RM, IW, BFY, and TDKAU. I would also say a number of these songs would appeal to an older market much better than "Little Things", "Midnight Memories" or even "You and I" do. Another problem they have, as I've pointed out, is they release albums so frequently (which I hate to complain about, but whatever) that their albums don't really get a chance to shine. If they want to be around 10 years from now, they need to have some long-lasting hits. WMYB was definitely a hit but it wasn't THAT successful and it's also really their only one thus far. (I do think SOML will eventually become a bigger hit than WMYB but I'm reserving judgement on that one until we see how it holds up with recurrent play.) They are quite capable, if they release the right material, of having 4-5 top 10 singles per album. Instead a good portion of their songs are struggling to maintain a top 20 position. Part of this is because there's a stigma about 1D still that they really need to get out of, and they absolutely have the quality material to justify their place in the music industry. They just don't release these songs to radio. It's frustrating as a fan because we see the good quality material they are giving us but their teams are choosing to release (generally) weaker songs as singles for the GP to hear and discuss. And quite frankly their singles (in general) are not a good representation of who they are as artists, and none of the songs they've released as singles are near the top of my list for their best songs. (Disclaimer: I love their singles as well, and am in no way trying to imply that their singles are not good quality material. However, IMO they have numerous album tracks that would perform better than some of the singles they've released.) |

I like the fact that they come out with albums every year. Their sales for all 3 albums are pretty close so it doesn't hurt that. I think their management cares more about sales than single placement on radio charts. The formula seems to be working for them so far. Personally I don't listen to the radio hardly at all so I love getting new music more often. I actually find it annoying how most artists take 2 or more years between albums. As long as it is not hurting their bottom line, which clearly it isn't, they should keep doing what they're doing.
This album is so good that nearly any song could have been a single. It's pretty much throwing a dart at the track list at this point. I still say this song will break the top 10.
