With Celine Dion scoring another AC hit with a collaboration, let's look back 15 years ago this week when she had 2 collaborations on the chart:
15 years ago, AC land was the home of the movie soundtrack hits. As you see, there are 8 on this week's chart with 3 of them landing in the top 4. Sarah McLachlan was at her peak as "Angel" ruled the land. In an era where AC wasn't the the top 40 retirement home, 3 of the top 10 songs failed to hit the top 40 chart, all of which were by acts who have had at 20 years in the business or more. Elton John (with help from LeAnn Rimes), Rod Stewart and Phil Collins.
Boy boy boy, remember loving (or hating) the Backstreet Boys? They had 3 songs in this week's top 20, although none of them were in the top 10. But fear not, as more were soon to come!
2 pianists also had hits this week. Jim Brickman was charting with a non-Christmas song, "Love of My Life" with Christian artist Michael W. Smith. John Tesh was also charting with "Forever More," his second collaborating with James Ingram.
Celine Dion had 2 superstar collaborations on the chart, both from her Christmas album. At #6 is her #1 hit "I'm Your Angel," with R. Kelly, and at #22 is "The Prayer" with Andrea Bocelli. Both Dion and Bocelli recorded solo versions of the song for the movie "Quest for Camelot" but the song was re-recorded for Dion's "These Are Special Times" album and the song was also getting a small surge after being performed at the 1999 Academy Awards.
In the AC-wannabe department, we have Marilyn Scott who was charting with "The Last Day." Her only success prior to AC was in 1978 reaching #61 on the Hot 100 with a cover of "God Only Knows." She has scored 3 hits on the AC chart, the most recent being "Don't Let Love Get Away" in 2002. Since then, she has had 2 albums reach the top 20 on the jazz chart.
At the bottom of the chart is actress Crystal Bernard, also in the AC-wannabe category. Crystal starred in the TV Series "It's a Living" and "Wings." In 1995 she first charted pairing up with Peter Cetera on "(I Wanna Take) Forever Tonight." The song only reached the top 25, but got to #6 on R&R's AC chart (since R&R had already split AC and Hot AC by then). "Don't Touch Me There" is her most recent AC appearance. The song is from her 2nd country album.
