Pharrell where were you before last year??!but just when you became 40 you started f**king the charts.GL then BL then Happy and now Sing! What are you doing Pharrell???? I can't believe it... How did Pharrell not get a featuring credit here? I'm surprised he passed it up. Must've been paid a lot of dough to give sole credit to ES, even though they share writing and, obviously, PW produced. |

From a public perspective and a commercial standpoint, he vanished after 8 years of chart ubiquity. It is very rare in the history of recorded music to come back so hard after that. The majority of his current success has a retro feel to it (Marvin for Blurred Lines, Chic for Get Lucky, Mayfield for Happy); Did any of his 2000s work have those elements? They always felt fairly 'of the moment' to me. by Mary J Blige, Bridges and Let's Stay Together by Cee-Lo and My Life by Robin Thicke from the Despicable Me Soundtrack all had throwback elements. The whole retro revival phase didn't start until 2012 for him tho. And let's not forget the mini 60's revival from Amy Winehouse and Duffy many years back. |

The whole retro revival phase didn't start until 2012 for him tho. And let's not forget the mini 60's revival from Amy Winehouse and Duffy many years back. That had nothing to do with Pharrell. They were asking about his production style specifically. |

You know, that's interesting. Up until now I thought that last year's retro trend (Treasure, BL, GL, etc) started and was inspired by Suit & Tie, (or at the very outset Ceelo's "F You" from 2011, but maybe it does date back to the Duffy / Amy Winehouse era.

F*** You, Get Lucky and Happy demonstrate that more simple and catchy the song is, the bigger is the success. Those hits are nothing but retro in terms of pop music. But it's also a bit polarzing: an artist can get a huge hit with that kind of song but also fail miserably. It's a bit of a gamble I think. I'd say Suit and Tie would have never been a hit if it was sung by Trey Songz.

After Amy Winehouse's success we had lots of other female British soul singers get promoted heavily early 2008 (most notably Estelle, Adele and Duffy), all of who are quite down Pharrell's street musically. But that trend died down very quickly really, so I don't think it's connected to the retro trend we had in 2013-now, even if it's similar musically. In 2009 there were some retro-ish songs (Lady Gaga and Black Eyed Peas's music albums were both heavily influenced by the electronic dance music of past decades, so much that some of their songs directly ripped off older songs), but that was a different kind, so I don't think it was related to the Amy Winehouse stuff, and it was definitely not the kind that Pharrell does. I remember a Pharrell interview from early last year (I think it was around the time Get Lucky got released), and he said some quite interesting things about why he felt that was the right time to start working more in the music industry again (and this was before he had all his hits, so his feelings were clearly correct). Also, the songs he did do during his "break" were never going to be chosen as singles, by major artists. For example, he did a song on Usher's 2012 album called Twisted (which is extremely catchy and actually sounds very similar to Blurred Lines). But back in those days people like Usher would usually only release dance-pop songs as singles. Pharrell just didn't stand a chance at getting a hit when most major artists weren't even considering non-dance songs as singles. It took Macklemore, Justin Timberlake, etc. before the music industry became more "Pharrell friendly" imo. |

towerofshowers, the decision to release a song like "Treasure" had everything to do with the one two three punch of the "Get Lucky / Suit & Tie and Blurred Lines" retro fad of last summer. It extended beyond that, too - Chris Brown's "Fine China" and Justin's "Take Back the Night" were also deeply influenced by VERY early 80s r&b. (I have to believe that the neo-disco vibe of Katy Perry's "Birthday' - completely missing from any "Teenage Dream" single - was created during that influential period last Summer.) I know some people had done the retro vibe before, but I do think Suit & Tie was the turning point and the moment when many mainstream acts began following the trend.
That's funny, because to me Sexyback was also the turning point for the "electronic" trend that took over pop for a few years, and everybody started doing it after JT (BEF, Rihanna, you name it). I'm not saying he was the first to do any of these, but I do believe he kind of set the trends.

I think with the airplay going down people are going to find the song to listen to and that is what is holding up the streaming. Even All Of Me is losing in audience as of today... If it gets to #1 it will back into #1. The problem is the sales lead is so HUGE. While All Of Me has just barely caught up to airplay and is only leading by a bit in streaming...The sales gap is such that Happy will still be #1 overall. |

I hadn't realized "Let It Go" was that (relatively) high in airplay. If Hot 100 Airplay was still 75 positions, it actually may have cracked it.
