August Alsina entered the chart this week in the #2 position with his Testimony album. The project sold 67,171 in its first week of availability. Overall, Pharrell has sold 304,376 copies of G I R L. In March, P spoke with HipHopDX about his work as a musician and as a collaborator. "I would say I’ve had a lot of really, really, really good help," he said at the time. "And I’m just thankful that people have seen something in me, and I was smart enough to allow them to guide me in the right direction. That’s the closest to that term I could ever come to. I’m smart enough to listen to other people, but nowhere near genius." As part of this week, HipHopDX reviewed Nas' album sales from Illmatic to Life Is Good, discussed the collection's importance after 20 years of life in retailers, shared lesser-known facts about the 1994 effort, interviewed AZ about his contribution to the project, spoke with Large Professor about his work on the set, and shed light on the album's influence by interviewing a slew of rappers, including Nino Bless, Fashawn, Dana Dane, Rapsody, Wreckonize and Fred The Godson. www.billboard.com/articles/news/6062884/frozen-scores-biggest-sales-week-yet-no-1-for-an-11th-week'Frozen' Scores Biggest Sales Week Yet, No. 1 For An 11th Week By Keith Caulfield, L.A. | April 23, 2014 Meanwhile, August Alsina, NEEDTOBREATHE, Jason Derulo & Ingrid Michaelson all invade the Top 5. The soundtrack to Disney's "Frozen," fueled by Easter shopping, earns its biggest sales week yet and 11th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The album sold 259,000 copies in the week ending April 20, according to Nielsen SoundScan. (The Easter holiday was April 20.) That's up 94% compared with the previous week, when the album shifted 133,000 at No. 1. This is also the fifth consecutive week that frozen sold more than 100,000 copies. To date, "Frozen" has sold 2.3 million copies. As the weeks tick by, "Frozen" continues to rack up impressive chart feats. Since SoundScan's point-of-sale data began powering the Billboard 200's rankings on May 25, 1991, "Frozen" is just the ninth album — and third soundtrack — to spend at least 11 weeks at No. 1. Going back even farther: Since the Billboard 200 started publishing on a regular, weekly basis in 1956, "Frozen" is one of only 15 soundtracks to spend at least 11 weeks at No. 1. "Frozen" also surpasses "The Lion King" (with 10 weeks at No. 1) as the longest-running No. 1 soundtrack by an animated film. Sales for "Frozen" in the week ending April 20 were powered by Easter shopping, which tends to lift sales of music that appeals to families and children. Thus, there are a number of titles on thechart that reap the benefits of Easter-related purchases. One Direction's "Midnight Memories," for example, climbs 55-38 (9,000; up 68 percent), and the child-friendly "Kidz Bop 25" album rises 42-20 (15,000 — up 126 percent). Speaking of One Direction, "Frozen" is the first album since "Midnight Memories" to score five straight weeks of sales that exceed 100,000. The first five sales frames for "Midnight Memories" all surpassed that threshold, ending with the week ending Dec. 29. In this week's episode, we break down Weekend 1 of Coachella, including Outkast's comeback, Lana Del Rey's star-making showcase & more. Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes HERE. But, what makes "Frozen" stand apart from "Midnight Memories" — and most other No. 1 albums, for that matter — is that the soundtrack has achieved such a hot sales streak so long after its release. The album was released on Nov. 26, 2013, and sold 44,000 copies in its first week (ending Dec. 1). It didn't begin its current five-in-a-row streak of 100,000-plus sales frames until the week ending March 23. "Frozen" is over 190,000 copies ahead of the No. 2 set this week, the debuting "Testimony" from August Alsina. It's the singer's first album, which also starts at No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. In fact, all of the titles between Nos. 2 and 5 are debuts. Rock band NEEDTOBREATHE launches at No. 3 with its highest-charting album ever, "Rivers In the Wasteland" (49,000), followed by Jason Derulo's first top 10 effort, "Talk Dirty," at No. 4 (44,000). Ingrid Michaelson closes out the debut party, as her "Lights Out" bows at No. 5 (37,000). For NEEDTOBREATHE, "Rivers" logs the band's best sales week yet, surpassing the No. 6 debut and peak of 2011's "The Reckoning." It entered with a handful of copies less than that logged by "Rivers." "Rivers" also debuts at No. 1 on the Rock Albums and Christian Albums charts. Derulo's "Talk Dirty" scores the pop singer's best sales week as well, exceeding the 42,000 copies of his self-titled debut that he sold in its first week in 2010. The latter album also tallied his previous high-water mark, when it debuted and peaked at No. 11.Derulo's new album — his third full-length effort — is powered by its title track, which hit No. 1 on the Pop Songs airplay chart dated April 26. Michaelson's "Lights Out" is the singer-songwriter's second top 10 effort, and follows 2012's "Human Again," which also debuted and peaked at No. 5. It started slightly stronger than "Lights Out," selling 40,000 in its first week. As for the rest of the top 10, Luke Bryan's "Crash My Party" rises 8-6 (33,000; up 77 percent), Pharrell's "G I R L" dips 2-7 (just under 33,000; up 12 percent), and Lorde's "Pure Heroine" rises 12-8 (26,000; up 62 percent). 5 Seconds of Summer's "She Looks So Perfect" falls 3-9 (just under 26,000; up less than 1 percent), and the "Now 49" compilation climbs 13-10 (22,000; up 45 percent). The "Frozen" party continues outside the top 10, as "Disney's Karaoke Series: Frozen" debuts at No. 17 with 15,000 sold. The set tallies the largest sales week for a karaoke album in a little over six years. The last time a karaoke title sold more was in theweek ending Dec. 23, 2007, when two more “Disney Karaoke Series” sets shifted a larger amount. That week, the companion karaoke albums to "Hannah Montana" and "High School Musical 2" sold 22,000 and 16,000, respectively. Over on the Digital Songs chart, Pharrell's "Happy" nets a 10th week at No. 1 (274,000 downloads; up 7 percent) —the longest run at No. 1 since Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" wrapped a 10-week No. 1 reign on the chart dated Aug. 24, 2013. ("Blurred" also featured Pharrell.) John Legend's "All of Me" is stationary at No. 2 (214,000; up 9 percent), as is Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty," featuring 2 Chainz, at No. 3 (198,000; up 22 percent) and Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" at No. 4 (158,000; up 4 percent). DJ Snake & Lil Jon's "Turn Down for What" ascends 8-5 with 120,000 (up 28 percent). Lana Del Rey scores her best debut sales week yet with the arrival of "West Coast." It enters at No. 6 with 118,000 sold. It's the first single from her upcoming album "Ultraviolence," which is due later this year. Katy Perry's "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J, falls 6-7 (113,000; up 2 percent), Ed Sheeran's "Sing" falls 5-8 in its second week (106,000; down 14 percent), and Luke Bryan's "Play It Again" drops 7-9 (105,000; down 3 percent). Aloe Blacc's "The Man" rounds out the top 10, down one spot to No. 10 (91,000; up 2 percent). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending April 20) totaled 5.3 million units, up 23 percent compared with the sum last week (4.3 million) and down 2 percent compared with the comparablesales week of 2013 (5.4 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 76.2 million, down 16 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (90.5 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 24million downloads, up 11 percent compared with last week (21.7 million) and up 1 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (23.7 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 379 million, down 13 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (434 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: Michael Buble's "To Be Loved" debuted at No. 1 with 195,000 and Fantasia's "Side Effects of You" started at No. 2 with 91,000.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-frozen-gets-hotter-185851775.htmlChart Watch: “Frozen” Gets HotterBy Paul Grein, Yahoo! Chart Watch You'd think the "Frozen" soundtrack would be slowing down by now, but it just keeps, well, snowballing. The album sold 259K copies this week, which constitutes its biggest sales week to date. This is the biggest one-week tally for a soundtrack since "Michael Jackson's This Is It" sold 373K copies in its first week in November 2009. "Frozen" logs its 11th week at #1 on The Billboard 200, which is a record only two albums have equaled in this century. Adele's "21" is out front since January 2000 with 24 weeks on top. Taylor Swift's "Fearless" had 11 weeks on top in 2008-2009. Three factors spurred this week's increase. "Frozen" is now stocked in Starbucks locations. The album made a nifty Easter gift. And Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" has become a pop smash. The song is due to spend its fifth week in the top five on the Hot 100 this week. "Frozen" has sold 2,335,000 copies, which makes it the best-selling soundtrack since "Twilight." That album has sold 2,807,000 copies since its release in October 2008. This is the 17th week in the top five for "Frozen". That's the longest run in the top five for a soundtrack from a theatrically-released movie since "Titanic" logged 18 weeks in the top five from January to May 1998. "Frozen" sold 58K digital copies this week, which puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums for the eighth week. It's only the second album to top this chart for eight or more weeks. It follows "21," which was the nation's best-selling digital album for 16 weeks. (Coldplay's "X&Y" and Eminem's "Recovery" are next in line. Each had seven weeks at #1.) "Frozen" is #1 on Top Soundtracks for the 21st week. The movie was in the top 30 at the box-office for the 22nd weekend. A spin-off, "Frozen Karaoke," debuts at #17. The album sold 15K copies, the highest tally for a karaoke album since a karaoke edition of the "High School Musical 2" soundtrack sold 16K in one week in December 2007. August Alsina's first studio album, "Testimony," debuts at #2. The album includes "I Luv This Shit" (featuring Trinidad James), which reached #48 on the Hot 100 in 2013 and #13 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and "Ghetto" (featuring Rich Homie Quan or Yo Gotti), which bubbled under the Hot 100 and cracked the top 40 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Alsina, 21, was born in New Orleans. NEEDTOBREATHE's fifth studio album, "Rivers In The Wasteland," debuts at #3. It's the group's highest-charting album to date, eclipsing "The Reckoning" (#6 in 2011). Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty" debuts at #4. It's his first top 10 album. Even so, the album's sales tally (44K) is underwhelming, considering that the title track (featuring 2 Chainz) is one of the year's biggest hits. The song has ranked in the top five on the Hot 100 for 12 consecutive weeks. It tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week. Like such peers as Flo Rida and Pitbull, Derulo is a singles artist. "Talk Dirty" is his fourth song to sell 3 million or more copies, but his albums don't sell in big numbers. His 2010 debut, "Jason Derulo," has sold 331K copies. His 2011 sophomore album, "Future History," has sold 80K copies. Ingrid Michaelson's sixth studio album, "Lights Out," debuts at #5. It's her second top five album in a row. "Human Again" reached #5 in 2012. Luke Bryan's "Crash My Party" rebounds from #8 to #6. The album returns to #1 on Top Country Albums, displacing Martina McBride's "Everlasting." This is the ninth week on top for "Crash My Party." That's the longest run at #1 for an album by a male solo artist since Jason Aldean's "My Kinda Party" topped the chart for 12 weeks in 2011. (So if you're a guy and you want to have a big country album, you know what word to put in the title.) Lorde's "Pure Heroine" rebounds from #12 to #8 in its 29th week. It becomes the fourth album to top the 500K mark in 2014 sales. It follows "Frozen," Beyonce's "Beyonce" and Eric Church's "The Outsiders." "Pure Heroine" has sold 512K copies in 2014, on top of the 687K copies it sold in the last 13 weeks of 2013. Pharrell Williams's "Happy" is #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the 10th consecutive week, with sales of 274K. It's the first song to log 10 consecutive weeks at #1 on this chart since "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz early last year. Will "Happy" log its ninth week at #1 on the Hot 100? You'll find out later today when we post my first of two Chart Watch Songs blogs. Here's a recap of this week's top 10 albums. MercyMe's "Welcome To The New" drops from #4 to #21. Black Label Society's "Catacombs Of The Black Vatican" dives from #5 to #46. SoMo's "SoMo" plummets from #6 to #67. Martina McBride's "Everlasting" dives from #7 to #47 (that's a surprise). Shakira's "Shakira" drops from #9 to #11. Florida Georgia Line's "Here's To The Real World" drops from #10 to #14. Nas's 1994 debut album, "Illmatic," re-enters the chart at #18, thanks to the release of a 20th anniversary edition dubbed "Illmatic XX." "Illmatic" debuted and peaked at #12 in April 1994. It has sold 1,686,000 copies. The album vaults from #112 to #1 on Top Catalog Albums. A 10th anniversary edition, "Illmatic 10th Anniversary," topped the catalog chart 10 years ago. Will a 30th anniversary edition reach #1 10 years from now? Place your bets. Sevendust's 10th studio album, "Time Travelers & Bonfires," debuts at #19. It's their eighth album to crack the top 20…Breathe Carolina's fourth studio album, "Savages," debuts at #22. It's the group's first album to crack the top 40 ... Jessie James Decker's "Comin' Home" EP debuts at #28. Decker was known as Jessie James in 2009 when her eponymous debut album reached #23. Last June she married football star Eric Decker, who is now a starting wide receiver for the New York Jets. Maroon 5's 2002 debut album, "Songs About Jane," tops the 5 million mark. Matt Wallace produced the album (with an assist from Mark Endert on "This Love"). The album spawned four top 40 hits on the Hot 100. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" was #1 at the box-office for the third straight weekend. The soundtrack, featuring a score by Henry Jackman, sold 1K copies, too few to make The Billboard 200. Metallica's "Through The Never" is #1 on Top Music Videos for the eighth week. That's the longest run on top for a video by a rock band since Rush's "Beyond The Lighted Stage" had 10 weeks on top in 2010-2011. The DVD has sold 72K copies in 13 weeks. Coming Attractions: Look for Iggy Azalea's "The New Classic" to debut at #2 next week (behind "Frozen"), with sales in the 50K range. Future's "Honest" is expected to debut at #3 (45K) Also due: Neon Trees's "Pop Psychology" (17K) and Francesca Battistelli's "If We're Honest."

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/6069804/record-store-day-chart-recap-vinyl-album-sales-reach-historic-highRecord Store Day Chart Recap: Vinyl Album Sales Reach Historic High By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | April 24, 2014 Record Store Day (RSD) shakes up Billboard's charts, as a bevy of albums and singles released for the indie retail event on April 19 overwhelm our lists. On the 25-position Tastemakers chart -- which tracks the top-selling albums at independent and small chain stores -- only three albums weren't specifically tied to RSD festivities. The chart (excerpted below) is led by Green Day's 18-track "Demolicious" album, which was released exclusively to indie retailers on CD, vinyl and cassette. (Yes, cassette.) It sold nearly 4,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Of that sum, 42 percent were CD, 42 percent were vinyl LPs and 16 percent were cassettes. "Demolicious" will become available to digital retailers on May 19, but its physical configurations will remain exclusive to indie sellers for the time being. INDIE RULES: Independent stores represented 19.4 percent of all physical albums sold in the week ending April 20 (605,000 of 5.3 million) -- likely the highest share of physical albums for the indie sector since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991. Billboard's Tastemakers Albums (chart dated May 3, reflecting sales in the week ending April 20) 1. Green Day, "Demolicious" (Reprise/Warner Bros.) 2. Beck, "Morning Phase" (Fonograf Records/Capitol) 3. Childish Gambino, "Because the Internet" (Glassnote) 4. The Afghan Whigs, "Do To the Beast" (Sub Pop) 5. Notorious B.I.G., "Life After Death" (Bad Boy/Rhino) 6. Various Artists, "The Space Project" (Lefse/Fat Possum) 7. Bruce Springsteen, "American Beauty" (EP) (Columbia) 8. Grateful Dead, "Hampton Coliseum: Friday May 4, 1979" (Grateful Dead/Rhino) 9. Nas, "Illmatic" (Columbia/Legacy) 10. Jake Bugg, "Live at Silver Platters: Seattle WA, January 20, 2014" (EP) (Virgin/EMI/Jake Bugg/Island) (The week's top-selling albums based on an influential panel of stores comprised of independent retailer coalitions and smaller regional chains. Titles are ranked by sales data as compiled by Nielsen SoundScan. Full chart viewable at billboard.biz.) VITAL VINYL: Overall vinyl album sales also hit a SoundScan-era high in the week ending April 20, as 369,000 LPs were sold. That easily beats the previous record, logged with 295,000 LPs in the week ending Dec. 22, 2013. (A year ago, RSD helped yield 244,000 vinyl LPs sold in the week ending April 20, 2013.) Billboard's Vinyl Albums (chart dated May 3, reflecting sales in the week ending April 20) 1. Childish Gambino, "Because the Internet" (Glassnote) 2. The Afghan Whigs, "Do To the Beast" (Sub Pop) 3. Notorious B.I.G., "Life After Death" (Bad Boy/Rhino) 4. Bruce Springsteen, "American Beauty" (EP) (Columbia) 5. The Jimi Hendrix Experience, "Live At Monterey" (Experience Hendrix/Legacy) 6. Grateful Dead, "Hampton Coliseum: Friday May 4, 1979" (Grateful Dead/Rhino) 7. Tame Impala, "Live Versions" (Modular/Interscope/IGA) 8. Joy Division, "An Ideal For Living" (EP) (Warner UK/Rhino) 9. The Flaming Lips, "7 Skies H3" (Lovely Sorts Of Death/Warner Bros.) 10. The Ramones, "Meltdown With the Ramones EP" (Sire/Rhino) (The week's top-selling vinyl albums, ranked by sales data as compiled by Nielsen SoundScan. Full chart viewable at billboard.biz.)

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/chart-alert/6069837/chart-moves-nas-illmatic-returns-marley-family-claims-latestChart Moves: Nas' 'Illmatic' Returns, Marley Family Claims Latest No. 1, 'Madison County' Debuts By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | April 25, 2014 Outside the top 10, there were a number of movers and shakers -- let's take a closer look at some of them: -- Nas, "Illmatic" - No. 18 - The 20th anniversary reissue of Nas' debut album returns to the chart (up 844 percent, selling 15,000 for the week). It also jumps back onto the Top Catalog Albums chart at No. 1, marking its first week atop the list in 10 years. It was last No. 1 following a 10th anniversary reissue in 2004. -- OneRepublic, "Native" - No. 26 - The album gains by 159 percent (rising 69-26; with 12,000 sold) courtesy of its reissue on April 15 with three new bonus tracks. "Native" was first released on March 26, 2013, and sold 571,000 before its reissue. -- The Afghan Whigs, "Do To the Beast" - No. 32 - The group's first all-new album in 16 years is also the act's highest-charting set ever, debuting at No. 32. It enters with 11,000 sold -- with 22 percent of that sum from vinyl LP sales. The band had visited the chart twice previously, going as high as No. 79 with Black Love in 1996. -- Various Artists, "Arrivederci Italy" - No. 52 - This Starbucks compilation of Italian tunes, which enters at No. 1 on World Albums, features contributions from Academy Award winner Sophia Loren ("Che M'e 'Mparato a Fa'") and Ennio Morricone ("Watch Chimes"). -- Ziggy Marley, "Fly Rasta" - No. 129 - With this album's No. 1 debut on the Reggae Albums chart, it gives the Marley family name its 26th chart-topper on the list. Amazingly, of the 140 No. 1s in the chart's 20-year history, 19 percent of them are from a Marley. In addition to Ziggy, the Marleys with No. 1s are Bob, Damian, Stephen and Ky-Mani. -- The Notorious B.I.G., "Life After Death" - No. 135 - Of the album's 3,000 sold for the week, a three-LP clear vinyl reissue (released for Record Store Day) accounts for 66 percent of its sales. It re-enters at No. 135. Overall, this is the album's best sales frame since the week ending Aug. 12, 2012. -- Original Broadway Cast Recording, "The Bridges of Madison County" - No. 184 - With nearly 3,000 sold (and a debut at No. 184), it earns the biggest debut for a cast recording in almost a year. The last larger entries came in the week ending June 9, 2013, when the new Broadway cast recording of "Pippin" (5,000) and the Broadway cast of "Motown: the Musical" (4,000) launched. "The Bridges of Madison County" also concurrently debuts at No. 1 on the Cast Albums chart.

Country album sales this week: www.roughstock.com/blog/country-music-s-top-10-albums-the-week-of-april-23-2014Country Music's Top 10 Albums: The Week of April 23, 2014By: Alanna Conaway Last Updated: April 23, 2014 2:04 PM Easter Helps Luke Bryan and other Top Country Stars Dominate the Top 10 Thanks to the easter gift sales boost, Luke Bryan’s Crash My Party scored a remarkable jump of 77% to return to the pole position in a week the biggest debuting album hit #5. Florida Georgia Line’s Here’s To The Good Times returns to #2 while Eric Church’s Gold-selling The Outsiders gained 22% over last week. The album was also part of the indie Record Store Day promotion. Johnny Cash’s month-old Out Among The Stars surpasses 110k scanned while Jessie James Decker rides her E! Reality TV show with husband, NFL player Eric Decker, to score her biggest chart success to date with Comin’ Home, an album now promoted via 19 Entertainment. She sold 11k copies in the first week of release, most of those digitally. Dan+Shay, Martina McBride, The ZinePak, Cole Swindell, and Blake Shelton round out Top 10. Martina McBride’s Everlasting slides #1 to #6, just like Dan+Shay did last week. The singer’s latest has sold 29k in two weeks. Dan+Shay are at #7 with Where It All Began, The album’s first single “19, You+Me” peaked at #11 on the radio chart but has sold over 500,000 downloads to date. Blake Shelton sits at #8 for another week with his 1.2 million seller Based On A True Story. The album is Blake’s best-selling album to date. Right behind him at #9 is Cole Swindell with his self-titled album. It has sold nearly 150k and is the best-selling album from a new artist so far in 2014 (Dan+Shay are #2 with 45k, Jon Pardi is #3 with 43k). Finally the ACM Zine Pack spends its fifth week in the Top 10 with sales now at 44k for the limited-run magazine, two CD project that’s become an annual promo tie-in for Walmart and the ACM and Country Music. Notable albums include George Strait’s Love Is Everything, Jerrod Niemann’s High Noon and Justin Moore’s Off The Beaten Path while Darius Rucker’s “True Believers” has scanned Gold! We start our notable (non Top 10) albums rundown with Randy Rogers Band, who have left UMG Nashville -- where they scored critical acclaim and a few hits -- and created their own record label in partnership with Thirty Tigers. The Texas-based band’s latest is the two CD/1 DVD live project Homemade Tamales, a raw and real collection of songs from the band that wasn’t overdubbed or ‘fixed’ in the studio. Next, we have Sara Evans’ Slow Me Down which has moved 58k in 6 weeks. The album gained 15% in sales over last week. Another sales gainer is Jerrod Niemann’s month-old High Noon. The album has now sold over 30k for the “Drink To That All Night” singer. Ray Price’s Beauty Is… the final album of his life before he passed away earlier this year, moved 3k this week, not bad for a small indie label like AmereMonte Records. Taylor Swift’s RED is up 25% thanks to Easter while Scotty Mccreery’s See You Tonight is up 16% for the week as is Danielle Bradbery (actually 15%) and Cassadee Pope with 8%. In other news, The Secret Sisters debut with 3,700 of Put You Needle Down sold, Rodney Crowell debuts with 3k of Tarpaper Sky and The Oak Ridge boys debut with 1,200 copies of Boys Night Out. Steve Earle’s Townes: The Basics debuts with 1,100 and Sarah Davidson returns to the chart with ¼ of her album’s total 4k sales hitting customers hands this week. Finally, Brandy Clark moved 800 copies of 12 Stories to bring sales to 29k to date for the critically-acclaimed indie release.
