Here is another article from Collin Raye once again speaking out about the state of Country Music. He really gives it hell in this one and points out some interesting things. I really wish a bunch of other artists would speak up so something will change. www.foxnews.com/opinion/2014/05/15/is-country-music-dead/

This needs to be publishing in Billboard, Aircheck, and emailed to every person in the Country industry...artists, writers, producers, executives, radio, etc! Collin speaks the truth more in this interview than anyone else has had the balls to do!

Ronnie Dunn re-posted Colin's thoughts to his Facebook page as well. I think I'm going to move the Colin Raye "country music dead" posts into their own thread because I think it's a big enough topic for its own discussion.

Wow. Pulitzer Prize? Truer words have never been spoken. Bravo to Collin raye. All opinions aside, that was very well written. If only people in Nashville would get on board...

Of all people to name drop in that article, it is Miranda Lambert. More undeserved praise. As much as I feel the industry has given her far to many awards, she has been one of the most consistent mainstream artists, at least in my opinion.

Collin pretty much nails it. I'm sure scores of artists feel the same way as Collin, and I wish more had the courage to speak out.

Wow, this is so incredibly well-written and accurate.
I've only been a Country fan for a little over a decade, but I miss the great stuff that drew me into the genre more than ever.
I know artists have been "selling out" for years now, but the whole epidemic of beer/trucks/cars and increasingly bad Pop\Rock production being put on every single song, there's a much bigger issue here. Why is it that so many artists start out as promising artists, and then suddenly start making vanilla music once they're on the "A List?" (I'm looking at you, Chris Young).
There are so many incredible songwriters in Nashville; I'm not willing to excuse the countless mediocre efforts as of late, because I simply expect more than we are receiving. Making bad music to make a buck will keep radio and the buying public happy, which degrades the talent and credibility of all involved. Reading Raye's standpoint reminded me of when Jason Aldean went on that childish, ridiculous tirade defending Luke Bryan. The only thing worse than knowing that the genre's top artists are willing participants in this game is knowing that they'll defend it because they think being millionaires off their "art" automatically qualifies them to call themselves great.
I love Miranda Lambert, and although I agree she is overpraised and over awarded, she is an absolutely incredible songwriter, a consistent album artist, and someone who isn't afraid to take risks. (All Kinds Of Kinds, Fine Tune, and her covers of artists outside the mainstream that she pays homage to on each album).
Sure, she's more mainstream, but I think she balances that element with quality and a quirky artistic individuality..you just have to go beyond the singles to find that.
If anybody is a great example for what Country should be right now, my vote goes to Kacey Musgraves over Lambert, though.
Lastly, I gotta give Raye a shoutout for being refreshingly honest without being arrogant. Great read.

To me the final nail in the coffin was radios rejection of Chris Stapleton's "What Are You Listening to" last year that if we weren't living in Bro' Country hell, it would had been an easy top 10 debut single like so many of the great neo-traditionalists artists Pre mid-2000s. Another one was the rejection of the great Bradley Gaskin "Mr. Bartendar" that Garth Brooks or Tracy Lawrence or Alan could had taken to #1 within weeks back in the day.
Miranda I do give credit for doing her own thing. I believe Carrie does her own thing too. They both need awarded equally for it. But radio doesn't expect women to sing beer-truck songs, or they would still be playing Gretchen Wilson. Radio sure isn't showing any interest in Kacey despite the album awards she is getting.
I've given up on radio. Like I've said other threads I just prefer now to make my own playlists or play CDs by artists I support. To me, radio doesn't even exist anymore. The only time I even turn it on is when I hit traffic in the morning or evening commute and need to find out where the accident is, then when I know that, my music goes back on and radio back off.
