I've brought this up a couple times before, but rather than it getting lost in the shuffle in the News/Non-Singles Compilation Thread, I thought I'd spin it out into its own thread. The Country Club with Dee Jay Silver is a syndicated radio show programmed by, you guessed it, Dee Jay Silver. As far as I can tell he doesn't do much from a hosting aspect, because the local DJ's are still on through the show. Silver just remixes country songs with dance beats. KMLE here in Phoenix has been playing it since late last year. They play it every Friday and Saturday night. So, when I was out driving around tonight, and it came on KMLE, I naturally switched to Clear Channel's KNIX to avoid it...only to discover that KNIX has now picked up the show as well. That must've happened within the last couple of weeks. And it's scary, because that probably means that it's been a hit in the ratings with KMLE (the main competitor, owned by CBS), resulting in KNIX's decision to air it as well. Country music is hardly country anymore, and this show just makes it worse. Silver often speeds up songs, and he adds tons of shuffling drum beats, back-beats, and a lot of bass to every song. And I can't even believe some of the songs he remixes. Obviously remixes of songs like "This Is How We Roll" and "Drink To That All Night" aren't surprising, but tonight I heard some strange ones. I listened out of curiosity just to see how bad it would be. I heard remixes of "Invisible", "Slow Me Down", "I Got A Car", "Clockwork", "Cop Car", "Night Train", "(Kissed You) Good Night", "Tornado", "Who I Am With You", and even a couple older songs like "When The Sun Goes Down" and "I Love This Bar". He even had a remix for "Somethin' Bad" already. He is absolutely ruining these songs. Are anybody else's ears subject to this torment?

^ No (thank God)
Here in Buffalo WYRK already has a awful syndicated show at night (Taste Of Country Nights). But I have heard it. The remixes are basically just drum loops and dance club mix-ups to the songs. The "Angel Eyes" remix he made was unrecognizable to the original and the "Bottoms Up" one was not even remotely close to being acceptable on country radio to my ears. Silver seems like a nice individual but this syndicated show is the worst I've ever heard and its pretty sad that many stations are hopping aboard. Like you said, many if these songs weren't that country to begin with, but he certainly put them over that boundary into full fledge pop club music.

The Rochester station WBEE that I sometimes listen to online (better playlist and it's still pretty local), I guess have added DJ Silver's show on Saturday nights. "Helluva Life" is playing and is just plain awful. The song has an added drum beat with these annoying hip/hop style background singers yelling the word "yep" every 5 seconds. I also heard "Royals" by Craig Campbell which Silver claims he remixed, and I'm sure he did cause I don't remember Craig's remake sounding that bad. "Beer Money" didn't sound too bad I guess, or maybe the others were so awful it held up pretty good in comparison. This must be relatively new cause I don't remember hearing this on their station before. Ironic that this thread was started just yesterday too... Edit: I just heard his remixed version of "Eight Second Ride" by Jake Owen. All I can say is There's this added rap (and I mean actual rap) verse from a unknown rap artist. Easily the worst song I've heard on this show. Good God I've only been listening to this for 20 minutes.

The reviews are hilarious on iTunes! While some of the reviews are indeed pretty hilarious, I think it does show a strong disconnect and a severe identity crisis for country music. There were similar reviews for "Lookin' For That Girl" and I'm sure for many other modern "country" songs. A lot of younger music listeners like the stuff and don't care if it's called country music, because they didn't grow up on actual country music and therefore don't have an appreciation for it...in other words, if they like the song, they could care less what genre it's classified as. They're happy that 'new country' is hip and modern when really it's just another type of top 40 music and not country, and that's the way it is with so much stuff on today's country radio. I think the reason why is a change in the way people consume music. People use to listen to their radios at home, but now with the internet and ways to buy/steal music easily online, people have so many ways to get their hands on music. Most people only listen to their radio in the car anymore, and so radio stations have felt increasing pressure to keep their listeners. It's all about entertainment now, not about the music. It's passive listening and not active listening...the big radio corporations are under the assumption that they need to play happy feel-good music non-stop because it's the only type of music that will entertain listeners on their drive at 5. Country radio has become another top 40 format, just with different artists/songs...Cumulus CEO John Dickey said the exact same thing last week. I mean really, what separates country radio from pop radio? Not much. Country music used to have a strong country sound to it and the songs all told stories...they weren't crafted for the sole reason of "being a jam". Today's pop music is still more dance-oriented but lyrically and instrumentally, there aren't very many differences between the two formats anymore. Country radio has swapped the fiddles and steel guitars for drum loops, hip-hop beats, and snarling electric guitars. And that's why you see so many people arguing about "what's country and what isn't". The people who grew up on actual country music aren't happy with the direction of country radio so don't expect them to just sit by with a smile on their faces. The problem is that such a huge demographic has gotten replaced by young listeners who listen to as much pop and hip-hop as anything else.

The Country Club has been on for about a month now. Most of the re-mixes are pretty awful. They also have a top 25 countdown show on Sunday Nights 6-9pm called Powered by Fitz. Never have had a shot to listen to it. I'll stick listening to CT40 on Sunday mornings

So both of the Phoenix stations have dropped this now, but rather than going back to normal "country" music, they've simply replaced Silver's syndicated shows with their own locally-produced shows. KNIX has "Country House Party with Antman and Friends" (Antman is what the PD goes by) and KMLE (called "the camel") has "Club Camel". KMLE has a local deejay remix all the songs (just like Silver does it) but fortunately it's not nearly as noticeable. KNIX's Country House Party, however, is way, way worse than Dee Jay Silver's show. To kick off the show tonight, they took about a dozen songs and mish-mashed them together...they played only about 1 minute of each song and just segued from one to the other as if it was all one big song. Their 'theme' song is Sam Hunt's "House Party", and after that they move on to the rest of the 'show'. Tonight they mixed in approximately one minute each of Billy Currington's "Hey Girl", Blake Shelton's "Boys 'Round Here", Jake Owen's "Barefoot Blue Jean Night", Kenny Chesney's "American Kids", Little Big Town's "Day Drinking", Brett Eldredge's "Don't Ya", The Swon Brothers' "Later On", Cole Swindell's "Chillin' It", Brantley Gilbert's "Bottoms Up", Florida Georgia Line's "This Is How We Roll", and Dustin Lynch's "Where It's At". They mixed all of those songs together and cut them up so that several lines repeated over and over. They even mixed in "Teach Me How To Dougie" with "Boys 'Round Here" I wanted to record some of it and post just how bad it was, but my phone was dead. Anyway, after that weird mixing of the songs, they started to play other songs in full (even remixing songs like Tim's "Shotgun Rider", Garth's "People Loving People", and Maddie & Tae's "Girl In A Country Song", which came on immediately after Thomas Rhett's "Get Me Some Of That"...) They had the Swon Brothers in the studio for a while (probably pre-recorded), and later one of the deejays came on and said he just heard the term "bro-country" last week and he claimed to still not have a clue what it means. If he's that behind the times...I think he needs to be out of radio, like, now. Most of the commercial breaks were all filled with country gossip and tabloid rumors too...the whole show just sickened me. I cannot believe that this is what country radio has come to. KMLE is better now (than when they had Dee Jay Silver) but they still committed an unforgivable crime by adding a back beat to "Meanwhile Back At Mama's", "Like A Cowboy", "Talladega", and "Baby Be My Love Song" tonight...oh, and also, LBT's "Boondocks"! I can't believe they are going that far back and remixing older songs like that. KNIX's "mixes" are much worse though--they basically swallow up the whole songs with dance beats and techno sounds (and oh yeah, KNIX speeds up a lot of songs too), but KMLE is still bad enough. Listening to the radio on weekend nights here makes me want to rip my ears off.
