PRA would have easily snagged #1 had it appeared on the chart earlier in 2011. Fancy has no chance to get #1 (I don't even think it will reach the top 5) unless it starts to sell Happy-like numbers or receive Harlem Shake streaming. Agreed, I wish there was a way for Billboard to do charts like Biggest Hits of 2011 instead of year-end charts. Timing is more important for year-end charts, Hot N Cold would definitely be so much higher in a ranking like that. The decade and all-time charts they release are not the same as the way they calculate year end charts, so it's not as accurate to pull the highest ranking hits of each year from the decade/all-time chart.

I agree, I don't see Katy getting #1... Pharrell has the 3rd biggest radio song of all time! He was #1 for over 10 weeks (right? I have awful memory...) and he's way ahead in digital sales... CALM DOWN!!!! But DH is clearly showing much better longevity having been on since the first week of the chart tear while Happy only debuted 6 weeks later and so DH currently has more YTD points than Happy and they're almost at the same level right now so even though Happy had a bigger instantaneous blow-up than DH... Yes, that is true, but Happy is still 1 million plus in digital sales compared to Dark Horse. Unless that extra airplay & streaming Dark Horse receives in those early weeks is pretty significant, I don't see Dark horse overtaking Happy. But who knows how strongly airplay and streaming will influence the year end chart.

So I guess Birthday is going to underperform even more than Unconditionally? Unconditionally reached top 10 in airplay, it looks like Birthday will peak at #13 in airplay. Not sure if it's sales were better than Unconditionally, but I wouldn't think so.

No I think Fancy might be streaming songs #1 because it seems like it will get quite a few weeks above 10 million streams. yea but Dark Horse has basically 6 months worth of being in the Top 5, and a good 10 weeks or so it was #1. Fancy has a lot of catching up to do. 8 weeks at #1. 10 weeks was On-Demand. And Fancy could quite easily match those. It already broke the record for the most weekly on-demands streams in these 2+ years that the chart has been out.

I like Lorde's "Tennis Court" but when the song finished the other day while driving. My friend and her 19 year old son looked at me and said WTF were we just listening too? They were laughing about the use of the word "Tennis Court". Maybe other's feel the same and that's why this isn't taking off on CHR like her previous two singles??? What's strange about a tennis court?

Look at those massive Spotify streaming numbers for Fancy! It will surely get more than 4 million on-demand streams this week (which hopefully Billboard will finally disclose so I can edit the Wikipedia page for On-Demand songs already with the higher record on-demand stream count for the song)!

Is "Stay With Me" going to be the new top ten entry this week on the Hot 100?

"Stay With Me" isn't Top 50 on Spotify....I wonder if this means the demographic buying it is a lot older than the other pop songs on the charts. Could mean big things for his album.

I would imagine the demographic who buys records is suburban. Downloads are the new CD. Streaming is what my people in harlem do. They were like I can pay $10/mo for everything I could want. It makes more financial sense to do that.

I imagine licenses on purchases can change again in the future.

Friday night* another round of shots. And you don't need lyrical diversity in order for a song to be catchy/enjoyable. Just saying. (Clearly all the other people that like this song, which there are clearly many such people, agree with me on that.)

Martin Garrix's "Animals" has even less lyrics.

You don't actually only the music that you buy on iTunes, you're buying a license to have it and listen to it until the time that the license expires. The same thing has happened with ebooks. You don't actually own an ebook, you have a license to read the content for as long as the publisher wishes to allow you use of it.

From my experience you get unlimted play, burning and usage for private non-commercial purposes They don't have an expiration date, but they are only good for as long as the label wants them to be. Once you have it downloaded onto your computer, they couldn't take it back necessarily, but they don't have to let you redownload it. I have had that happen before. My old computer died (this was several years ago, before I had an iphone or ipod), and I contacted Apple for iTunes support and they let me redownload some of my purchases, but not all because some of the licenses allowed for only a single download. So obviously my 99 cent license wasn't totally unlimited.

Do itunes purchases have an expiration date? From my experience you get unlimted play, burning and usage for private non-commercial purposes They don't have an expiration date, but they are only good for as long as the label wants them to be. Once you have it downloaded onto your computer, they couldn't take it back necessarily, but they don't have to let you redownload it. I have had that happen before. My old computer died (this was several years ago, before I had an iphone or ipod), and I contacted Apple for iTunes support and they let me redownload some of my purchases, but not all because some of the licenses allowed for only a single download. So obviously my 99 cent license wasn't totally unlimited. Unlimited - no expiration date - etc. That is what I was referring to. All itunes songs are like that now. Songs with DRM tags (which old itunes songs had as well) are limited. If you download a song with DRM on your computer hard drive and you try to play it, it will first check to see if the license is current and valid. Even with unlimited play, if the label or the digital service you bought it from no longer supports the purchase, it won't work. DRM free songs that are sold today are not that way. Your $1.29 buys you an unlimited right to use your downloaded song in any non-commercial way that you see fit for as long as you want. (you implicitly agree you will not sell, trade or distribute the song you bought with your $1.29 and it will only be used for your own private use)

Wait - are you kidding? Certain older iTunes songs - that I purchased with my own money - might not be playable in the future? That. is. not. good.
