After holding a dance format (Evolution) for almost a year, 101.7 FM in Boston has switched formats again and is now a Country Hits station 101.7 The Bull). The station is running commercial free through the entire summer, but its signal is weak and inconsistent, and many listeners are frustrated by it. Now, Boston already has a country station (102.5), so I am unclear why another country station was brought into the mix. Nonetheless, 102.5 has felt the competition and reacted.
102.5 prided itself as being the 'variety' country station and played all new hits but threw in some of the older hits by Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, and Shania Twain into their playlist. The station also hosted an oldies country show on Sunday mornings, playing classics by Merle Haggard, Tanya Tucker, etc. But now, all that is changed. 2 weeks ago, the station dropped the Sunday oldies show (after being on for 20 years). The tag lines are also changed - Country 102.5 is now claiming to be the station with 'the most new hit country', dropping anything to do with variety. Since the change, I haven't heard those classic Garth and Reba songs anymore.
Let's see what will happen and if the Boston market can support 2 country stations.

Is country not very popular in Boston? I'm curious because we have 3 country stations in Kansas City so having two in a market as big as Boston doesn't seem all that odd to me.
