www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.29560/title.hip-hop-album-sales-week-ending-06-29-2014 Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 06/29/2014by Andres Tardio posted July 02, 2014 at 11:00AM EST G-Eazy's "These Things Happen" takes the top spot in the Hip Hop and R&B category, while Ab-Soul's "These Days..." debuts outside of the Top 10. This week on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, G-Eazy arrives at #3 with These Things Happen. Meanwhile Linkin Park's The Hunting Party falls to #9 and Ab-Soul's These Days... arrives just outside of the Top 10. G-Eazy's These Things Happen Arrives At #3 G-Eazy, a rapper who was raised in Oakland, California and moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, is #3 on the chart with These Things Happen. The album sold 46,091 units in its first week of availability, placing it just behind new albums by Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith. Earlier this year, G-Eazy spoke with The Source about the These Things Happen. "It was really a reaction to this crazy lifestyle we are living right now," he said. "Being on the road almost all year and every night you sell out a show its kind of a mind f**k in itself. It’s like You work for something for so long so when it finally starts to happen your reaction is kinda crazy. You know, we would have these wild nights on tour then you would wake up the next morning like, 'f**k, these things happen.'" Linkin Park's The Hunting Party Remains In Top 10 Linkin Park's The Hunting Party fell to #9 this week, following its #3 placement last week. In its second week of availability, The Hunting Party has sold 28,815 units, a 74 percent decrease from its first week sales. Overall, the album has moved 139,414 units. During an interview with HipHopDX this year, Linkin Park rapper, singer and producer Mike Shinoda explained how collaborator Rakim influenced the band. "He’s an artist whose respected but not mentioned really in Pop culture even though he is the Godfather of a lot of things in Hip Hop," Shinoda said of Rakim. "He’s kind of a bar by which lyricists are measured, but the times have changed. He’s not gonna make a Pop music song for people to dance to and s**t. He refuses to do it, and that’s how we felt on this record. We didn’t wanna play by the rules and make a Pop record, we don’t have it in us. I think it was what we connected on immediately and why he came all the way from New York to record with us." Ab-Soul's These Days... Lands At #11 Ab-Soul's These Days... sold 21,812 units in its first week of availability, allowing the TDE emcee to fall into #11. These Days..., which is available for streaming via HipHopDX, has been critically acclaimed. The project recently earned a 4 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "If TDE has an unheralded trait left it’s an almost universally thoughtful approach to song sequencing," HipHopDX says of the effort. "These Days… feels complete by the end as another properly dosed project. Somewhere on the album, Soul projects his own self-worth: 'enlightenment from a low life that’s more than likely high.' He’s let the high filter out more of the revelation, and it sounds like a more accessible piece of entertainment than his last. It’s not the call to arms some expected, but Ab-Soul is as convincingly conspicuous as he’s ever been." Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 06/29/2014 #3. www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6143242/ed-sheerans-x-debuts-at-no-1-on-billboard-200-albums-chartEd Sheeran's 'X' Debuts At No. 1 On Billboard 200 Albums Chart By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | July 02, 2014 British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran earns his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, as "x" opens with 210,000 sold in the week ending June 29, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The set is Sheeran's second full-length effort, and was released June 23 through Atlantic Records. Sheeran logs his best sales week, the largest debut for a pop album this year and the fourth-biggest opening overall in 2014. He trails only the arrivals of Coldplay's "Ghost Stories" (383,000), Eric Church's "The Outsiders" (288,000) and Brantley Gilbert's "Just As I Am" (211,000). Among pop sets, the last to open bigger was One Direction's "Midnight Memories," with 546,000 sold in the week ending Dec. 1, 2013. Sheeran also claims the largest sales week for a British male artist in nearly 10 years. The last time such an artist earned a bigger week was when Rod Stewart's "Stardust … The Great American Songbook Vol. III" debuted at No. 1 with 240,000 sold in the week ending Oct. 24, 2004. Sheeran's "x" follows his first album, "+," which debuted and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, selling 42,000 in its first week. It has sold 841,000 total. Holding at No. 2 for a second week is fellow British artist Sam Smith's "In the Lonely Hour," with 67,000 — down a moderate 60 percent in its second frame. It has sold 233,000 in its two weeks on sale. With Sheeran and Smith at Nos. 1 and 2, the Billboard 200's top two rungs are occupied by British soloists for the first time in more than 20 years. That last happened on the March 27, 1993 chart, when Eric Clapton's "Unplugged" and Sting's "Ten Summoner's Tales" were Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. (The last time the chart had two British acts in the top two — solo or otherwise — was on the Oct. 20, 2012 chart. That week, Mumford & Sons' "Babel" and Muse's "The 2nd Law" led the list. Rapper G-Eazy arrives in the No. 3 position on the new chart with "These Things Happen," selling 46,000 — his best sales week yet. He also leads Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Rap Albums and Independent Albums. The new album is the artist's first to reach the Billboard 200, though he visited the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums tally previously with 2012's "Must Be Nice." "These Things Happen" nets the second-largest debut for an independently distributed rap effort this year, behind 50 Cent's "Animal Ambition: An Untamed Desire to Win" (47,000). G-Eazy is also the first act to hit No. 1 on Rap Albums this year without having ever charted a single on the Rap Airplay chart. Meanwhile, last week's new No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Lana Del Rey's "Ultraviolence," falls to No. 4 with 44,000 in its second week (down 76 percent). After two weeks, the album has moved 227,000. (So even though Smith's "In the Lonely Hour" missed out on the No. 1 slot, it has now sold more than the album that beat it to the top.) The "Frozen" soundtrack spends its 28th straight week in the top five, as the album slips 4-5 with 38,000 (down 11 percent). Rock band Mastodon nets its highest-charting album ever, as "Once More 'Round the Sun" debuts at No. 6 with 34,000. (However, it's not the group's biggest sales week — that belongs to the 41,000 debut frame of 2009's "Crack the Sky.") The act had previously topped out at No. 10 with 2011's "The Hunter" in its opening week. Another rock act, Phish, nets its highest-charting album since 1996, as "Fuego" bows at No. 7 with 32,000. That ties with 1996's "Billy Breathes" as the band's highest-charting set. "Fuego" is Phish's 32nd charting effort, it’s first top 10 since1998's "The Story of the Ghost" (No. 8 peak) and the first studio release since 2009's "Joy" (which debuted and peaked at No. 13). Miranda Lambert's "Platinum" dips 6-8 with 29,000 (down 15 percent), Linkin Park's "The Hunting Party" falls 3-9 with nearly 29,000 (down 74 percent), and the "Now 50" compilation rises 11-10 with 22,000 (down 15 percent). Over on the Digital Songs chart, Sam Smith jumps three rungs to No. 1 with "Stay With Me." It sold 211,000 downloads in the week ending June 29, a gain of 42 percent. (The song's sales slide last week was owed to iTunes customers who opted to "complete" their purchase of Smith's album by upgrading their earlier purchases of "Stay" to the entire album. Effectively, consumers who completed the set were returning the song, thus translating to its sales slip.) Magic's "Rude" slips 1-2 with 210,000 (up less than 1 percent); Iggy Azalea's "Fancy," featuring Charli XCX, drops 2-3 with 178,000 (down 9 percent); and Ariana Grande's "Problem," featuring Azalea, descends 3-4 with 153,000 (down 6 percent). Newcomer Shawn Mendes arrives at No. 5 with his debut single, "Life of the Party," selling 148,000. A social network star (with 2.7 million followers on Vine and 1.2 million followers on Twitter), the 15-year-old singer signed to Island Records less than two months ago. Mendes earns the largest opening week for an act's debut single since the week ending May 27, 2012 when Phillip Phillips' "Home" bowed at No. 2 with 278,000. That was also the same week that Phillips won the 11th season of "American Idol" — he was crowned May 23. Nico & Vinz's "Am I Wrong" slides 5-6 with 147,000 (up 5 percent); Jason Derulo's "Wiggle," featuring Snoop Dogg, rises 8-7 with 120,000 (down 7 percent); and Maroon 5's "Maps" falls 6-8 with 104,000 (down 25 percent in its second week). Disclosure's "Latch," featuring Smith, climbs into the top 10 for the first time, rising 12-9 with 101,000 (up 10 percent). Charli XCX's "Boom Clap" closes out the region, holding at No. 10 with 99,000 (up 3 percent). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending June 29) totaled 4.3 million units, down 6 percent compared with the sum last week (4.6 million) and down 14 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 120.9 million, down 15 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (142 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 21.5 million downloads, up 2 percent compared with last week (21 million) and down 15 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (25.2 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 593.4 million, down 13 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (682.2 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: J. Cole's "Born Sinner" rose to No. 1, selling 58,000 (down 32 percent), while Wale's "The Gifted" fell from the top slot to No. 2 with 50,000 (down 68 percent). The top debut was Joe's "Doubleback: Evolution of R&B," which started at No. 6 with 31,000.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-ed-sheerans-transatlantic-1-202342797.htmlChart Watch: Ed Sheeran's Transatlantic #1 By Paul Grein, Yahoo! Chart Watch Ed Sheeran's sophomore album, x, debuts at #1 in both the U.S. and the U.K. this week. Sheeran is the first British male solo artist to send an album to #1 in both the U.S. and the U.K. in more than 20 years. The last to do it was Eric Clapton, who scored with From The Cradle in September 1994 (when Sheeran was just three years old). Seven other British male solo artists have sent albums to #1 in both the U.S. and the U.K. Elton John (with whom Sheeran performed “The A Team” at the Grammys in February 2013) has done it with four different albums, more than anyone else. He scored in 1973-1974 with Don’t Shoot Me—I’m Only The Piano Player, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Caribou and Greatest Hits. John Lennon and Phil Collins have each had two transatlantic #1 albums. George Harrison, Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney and George Michael have each had one. (McCartney had two more with his group, Wings. Michael had one more with his duo, Wham!). x is the fourth album to reach #1 in both the U.S. and the U.K. in 2014. It follows Bruce Springsteen's High Hopes, Coldplay's Ghost Stories and Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolence. x sold 209K copies this week, a total topped by only four albums so far this year: Coldplay's Ghost Stories (383K), Eric Church's The Outsiders (288K), the Frozen soundtrack (259K) and Brantley Gilbert's Just As I Am (211K). This is the largest sales tally for an album by a British male solo artist since Rod Stewart’s Stardust…The Great American Songbook Vol. III sold 240K in its first week in October 2004. That was a collection of standards. Smith’s album consists of new material, including at least one song that may become a standard, “Stay With Me.” Fun with Numbers: x sold nearly as many copies in its first week in the U.K. (182K) as it did in the U.S. (209K), even though the U.S. has about five times as many people as the U.K. (about 315M vs. 63M). x had the biggest sales week so far this year in the U.K. (surpassing Coldplay’s album by 14K). Xx (pronounced multiply) sold 162K digital copies, which puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums. Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour holds down the #2 spot in both the U.S. and the U.K. this week. This marks the first time that British male solo artists have locked up the top two spots in the U.S. since March 1993, when Clapton’s Unplugged and Sting's Ten Summoner’s Tales achieved the feat. G-Eazy's third studio album, These Things Happen, debuts at #3. G-Eazy is the hottest white rapper since Macklemore, whose The Heist (with Ryan Lewis) debuted at #2 in October 2012. The Frozen soundtrack, which dips from #4 to #5, tops the 3M sales mark this week. It’s the first soundtrack to a theatrically-released movie to hit 3M since 8 Mile, which has sold 4,922,000 copies since its release in 2002. It’s the first soundtrack to an animated movie to hit 3M since The Lion King, which has sold 7,879,000 copies since its release in 1994. All three of these soundtracks spawned Oscar-winning songs: “Let It Go,” “Lose Yourself,” and “Can You Feel The Love Tonight,” respectively. Frozen is #1 on Top Soundtracks for the 31st week. Mastodon's sixth studio album, Once More ‘Round The Sun, debuts at #6. It’s the band’s highest-charting album, and its second top 10 album in a row. The Hunter hit #10 in September 2011. Phish's 16th studio album, Fuego, debuts at #7. This puts it in a tie with 1996’s Billy Breathes as the band’s highest-charting album to date. It’s the band’s third top 10 album; its first since The Story Of The Ghost (#8 in 1998). Phish has been releasing albums since 1986. Miranda Lambert’s Platinum drops from #6 to #8. It returns to #1 on Top Country Albums, displacing Willie Nelson's Band Of Brothers. This is its third week on top. It’s the first album by a female artist to top the country chart for three or more weeks since Taylor Swift's Red logged 16 weeks on top in late 2012 and early 2013. Sam Smith's”Stay With Me” jumps from #4 to #1 on Hot Digital Songs (211K), dislodging MAGIC!’s “Rude,” which slips to #2 (210K). Will either of these songs knock “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX from the #1 spot on the Hot 100? You’ll find out later today when we post the first of two Chart Watch Songs blogs. Here’s a recap of this week’s top 10 albums. The Top Five: Ed Sheeran's x debuts at #1 (209K). It’s his second top 10 album … Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour holds at #2 in its second week (67K) … G-Eazy's These Things Happen debuts at #3 (46K). It’s his first top 10 album … Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolence drops from #1 to #4 in its second week (44K) … The Frozen soundtrack dips from #4 to #5 in its 31st week (38K). This is its 29th week in the top 10. The Second Five: Mastodon's Once More ‘Round The Sun debuts at #6 (34K). It’s the band’s second top 10 album … Phish's Fuego debuts at #7 (32K). It’s the band’s third top 10 album … Miranda Lambert’s Platinum drops from #6 to #8 in its fourth week (29K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time … Linkin Park's The Hunting Party drops from #3 to #9 in its second week (29K) … Now 50 rebounds from #11 to #10 in its eighth week (22K). This is its seventh week in the top 10. Five albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Willie Nelson’s Band Of Brothers drops from #5 to #23. Jack White's Lazaretto drops from #7 to #13. Jennifer Lopez's A.K.A. drops from #8 to #31. Deadmau5's while (1<2) drops from #9 to #26. Brantley Gilbert's Just As I Am drops from #10 to #12. Ab-Soul's third studio album, These Days…, debuts at #11. It’s his highest-charting album to date. It tops Control System, which reached #91 in 2012. The Jersey Boys soundtrack debuts at #15. The Broadway cast album to the Tony-winning show has sold 1,387,000 copies since its release in November 2005. Jersey Boys is one of two cast albums to jukebox musicals to have sold 1 million or more copies. The other is Mamma Mia!, which has sold 1,694,000 copies since its release in October 2000. For fans who prefer the originals, two 4 Seasons compilations have sold more than 500K copies. One of them, The Very Best Of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, jumps from #41 to #35 this week. The album, which was first released in 2005, moves up to #1 on Top Catalog Albums, displacing Led Zeppelin's 1969 debut album, which spent the past three weeks on top. The 4 Seasons and Led Zeppelin have something in common. Both were Grammy nominees for Best New Artist. Neither won. Zeppelin lost the 1969 award to Crosby, Stills & Nash, another legendary act that was simply more in tune with Grammy tastes. The 4 Seasons lost the 1962 award to JFK impersonator Vaughn Meader, whose The First Family album was a phenomenal hit. Joe's 11th studio album, Bridges, debuts at #17. It’s his eighth top 20 album … Owl City's Ultraviolet debuts at #30. The title’s similarity to Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolence is just coincidental. Transformers: Age Of Distinction was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. There is no soundtrack yet. Beyonce's Beyonce tops the 2 million sales mark this week. It has far outsold Beyonce’s fourth album, 4, which has sold 1,410,000 copies, though it has a long way to go to match the 3M+ sales of B’s first three studio albums. Coming Attractions: Look for Trey Songz'sTrigga to debut at #1 next week, with first-week sales in the 85K range. Three other albums will probably open in the top 10: Seether's Isolate & Medicate (35K), MAGIC!'s Don’t Kill The Magic! (27K) and Robin Thicke's Paula (20K). Also due: the Begin Again soundtrack, the late Jenni Rivera's 1969-Siempre, En Vivo Desde Monterrey, Parte 2 and Old Crow Medicine Show's Remedy.

Thanks for posting. Fifty-two catalog titles on the BB 200 this week. Yes. There's been over 50 Catalog albums on the BB200 for 6 weeks now. Is it due to a light release schedule or falling album sales? June was busy with new albums. July and August look to be kind of quiet.

The year's release schedule has been very light. Big names either dropped albums in the end of 2013 or will drop albums at the end of 2014. I think this is going to be the new normal going forward. Sales are down except they're less down at Christmas, so if you want to move units, you have to release it in Q4.

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/chart-alert/6150230/chart-moves-beyonce-hits-2-million-in-sales-purple-rains-30thChart Moves: 'Beyonce' Hits 2 Million in Sales, 'Purple Rain's 30th Anniversary on the Charts and a 5 Seconds of Summer Sales UpdateBy Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | July 03, 2014 This week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, Ed Sheeran's "x" notched the largest debut week for a pop album in 2014, as it arrived at No. 1 on the chart with 210,000 sold in the week ending June 29 -- according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the first chart-topper for Sheeran, who previously reached No. 5 with 2012's "+." Sheeran wasn't the only news on the chart, though, so let's take a look at some of the list's other movers and shakers outside the top 10: -- Soundtrack, "Jersey Boys: Music From the Motion Picture and Broadway Musical" - No. 15 - The compilation -- which contains music both from the new movie and the original Broadway cast recording -- debuts at No. 15 with 18,000 sold. Meanwhile, the original Broadway cast album of "Jersey Boys" rises 149-125 with 3,000 (up 10 percent). The group that the stories of both the film and musical are based on -- the 4 Seasons -- has two albums on the chart: "The Very Best Of" jumps 41-35 with 8,000 (up 28 percent) and "The Definitive Pop Collection" bows at No. 159 with 2,000 sold. -- 5 Seconds of Summer, "She Looks So Perfect" (EP) - No. 49 - Here's something that may be surprising: despite the band's youth-driven popularity (and thus, big sales through digital retailers), the EP's physical sales are quite formidable. The CD version of the set has sold 122,000 copies -- while the digital version has sold 148,000. And, strikingly, in the album's 13 weeks in release, its weekly physical sales have exceeded its digital sales in every frame but its debut week. The album's total sales now stand at 270,000. -- August Alsina, "Testimony" - No. 67 - August Alsina's "Testimony" collects one of the largest percentage sales gains on the chart -- it's up by 41 percent -- following his performance and wins on the BET Awards (June 29). The R&B and hip-hop star won the best new artist trophy (beating Ariana Grande, Mack Wilds, Rich Homie Quan and Schoolboy Q), the Coca-Cola sponsored viewer's choice award, and later performed with Trey Songz and Chris Brown. -- Beyonce, "Beyonce" - No. 72 - The diva's most recent release crosses the 2 million sales mark, as "Beyonce" sold another 4,000 copies in the week ending June 29 (bringing its to-date total to 2,003,000). It's her fourth album to sell 2 million copies, following her "Dangerously In Love" debut (2003; 4.9 million), "B'Day" (2006; 3.4 million) and "I Am… Sasha Fierce" (2008; 3.1 million). Her only studio set to sell less than 2 million is 2011's "4," which has shifted 1.4 million. -- Prince and the Revolution, "Purple Rain" - No. 193 - The blockbuster album marks its 30th anniversary on the chart, as it re-enters at No. 193 on the list (dated July 12, 2014) -- three decades after it debuted on the July 14, 1984 chart. The set, which doubled as the soundtrack to the film of the same name starring Prince, entered at No. 11, and then shot to No. 3 the following week. A week later it was No. 2, and then, the following week, it jumped to No. 1 (Aug. 4, 1984). The album spent 24 consecutive weeks atop the list -- the longest run at No. 1 for a soundtrack in the 1980s. No album spent as many weeks at No. 1 following "Purple Rain" until 2012, when Adele's "21" spent its 24th (and final) nonconsecutive week at No. 1 (June 23). "Purple Rain" is due to be reissued later this year in a deluxe remastered package, following Prince's return to the label that released the album -- Warner Bros. Records. "Purple Rain" -- like the rest of Prince's catalog -- has remained essentially untouched since its initial release. Certainly, famously strained relations between Warner Bros. and Prince had likely made any sort of conversation about a catalog overhaul a non-starter. Now, with Prince and Warner Bros. back together, the path has been cleared for what could be a well-received reissue of "Purple Rain." "Purple Rain" has sold 13 million copies in the U.S. according to the Recording Industry Association of America, making it not only Prince’s best-selling album, but the third-largest selling soundtrack ever.

Beyoncé's album started so well that it's quite interesting that there have been no proper hits since DIL and the album won't probably pass 2.5m. Of course it's still a huge success but the whole project sort of came and went in 4 months.

Of course it's still a huge success but the whole project sort of came and went in 4 months. It doesn't matter, it did more than it needed to do and is considered a giant success. They have a giant tour, countless Urban radio hits, millions of YouTube views, and a 2 million selling album in 2014. Albums are lucky to even hit 500,000 in 2014. If she did promote it, sure it would do a little better, but why waste energy and time on that when she didn't need to and still achive insane results?

With her Pepsi deal, last year's tour, all the sales for "Beyonce" over Christmas and now her summer tour with Jay Z, she has made all her money.
