wonder if this will come out of the gate speeding because of name or not do anything at all because of name Who the hell is Fences and why do they have name value? Song is repetitive as s**t, although this does remind me of a pop hit from 2008? or so. Might be one of Akon's proteges - Karnidal, Colby O Donis, etc. Or "American Boys" by Kanye West. And "Feel So Close" by Calvin Harris. This screams Pop summer smash tbh.

I don't see this doing well on Alt, but it could probably be successful on Pop.

Well his past songs were not. Yeah I freaked out one night earlier this year when "Thrift Shop" was on a Austin alt station on Iheart. And I heard that ballad last year as well but to me he is more urban/hip-hop.

He's the rare case of Alternative playing a rapper, although I guess they only played him because "Thrift Shop" supports the DIY punk ethic and "Same Love" is about gays, which the Alternative scene has embraced both.

I like this. I could see this being a multiformat hit. Who the hell is Fences and why do they have name value? meant macklemore There has been some backlash after they won so many Grammy awards earlier this year, but I think they will be okay.

I don't think I was listening to Alternative radio stations then. I started listening to Tune-In early last year around May and before that I was listening to WJRR and in early 2012 I was listening to Dish's Music Channels and would listen to Alternative some but they were not out then. I never heard "Thrift Shop" on any alt station on Tune-In(Got radio, The Blitz, 100 FMZ) since first listening to it. But heard it one time on Iheart.

I could see this song doing very well all because of Macklemore's past success. I think it's catchy enough for people that aren't hop-hop fans to tolerate.

I don't really think this is the type of song that Pop would pick up, maybe some stations. Macklemore has sort of struggled since "Thrift Shop" and "Can't Hold Us" were so massive. "Same Love" barely hit #5 (deserved #1 imo) and "White Walls" couldn't even break Top 10. I hope they do try a push at Pop though and prove me wrong. This is a really good song.

"Same Love" only peaked at #5 because it was pretty much the ceiling for that song. A song about gay marrige would not stick on every station on the panel because I decent amount of those stations are probably located in areas where gay marriage is still frowned upon. It did quite well on the chart considering this. "White Walls" just suffered being a fourth single. It did very well digitally (was in the Top 20 on US iTunes for a while), and had airplay to match it. I think it had a pretty normal run so that was that. As for this song, I think it could go either way. It might not do anything significant at all on all formats, or do significantly well on all possible formats (ultimately becoming the most successful on CHR/Pop). If the latter is the case, then I see "Fences" peaking in the lower teens on Alt.

Is Maclemore alternative? He's not. I think the reason alternative stations play him is because he's not signed to a major record label, and I think alternative stations like to support independent artists.

Idk, I think he borders on qualifying as alternative rapAlso, alternative radio has always been known to play some hip hop, even well-known major-label acts like Eminem or the Beastie Boys
