I can remember Clint being one of the first country artists that drew me to country music as a little boy in the 90's. I always seemed to get Clint's Killin' Time cassette for my birthdays back then (from parents of my friends who knew I liked country). I got the chance to see him live in 1992 right around the time that "We Tell Ourselves" was released. He was one of the hottest acts at the time and I can remember his set being really good.
I try not to stray out of the top 5 rule, but I found it hard to do with Clint:
Top: 1. Killin' Time 2. State of Mind 3. Nothing's News 4. Walkin' Away / Where Are You Now / Loving Blind (all three of these are great that I could never chose which one I like best) 4. The Shoes You're Wearing 5. When My Ship Comes In 6. Spend My Time 7. A Good Run of Bad Luck 8. Like the Rain 9. A Bad Goodbye (w/ Wynonna) 10. Still Holding On (w/ Martina)
I could easily keep going but I'll stop there (I enjoy "Desperado" and was also a fan of "Easy For Me to Say").
I don't really have a bottom list of songs, but I'd probably list the overplayed "When I Said I Do." I just like Clint's voice so much that I find myself enjoying most of his material that he puts out.

Rainbow in the Rain 6. When I Said I Do (although I dislike it a lot less than I did when it was new) This blew my mind. How is this possible I heard this song in the 90s almost more than any song I can remember. And I still hear it quite a bit as a recurrent.

This is going to sound like a weird question but it's actually important lol.
For those who don't like "When I Said I Do", why don't you like it?

For those who don't like "When I Said I Do", why don't you like it? Cliche, bland, boring, borderline corny lyrics that was massively overplayed and bring back not so fond memories of my childhood.

This is a typical 90s country love ballad made for radio. It was the type of "i-love-you-forever" ballads that the 90s country love ("I Swear," "How Do I Live,""Rope the Moon," "God Must Have Spent A Little More Time on You," "She's Every Women" and on and on). Some are quite good (e.g., Martina's "Valentine") but Clint's "When I Say I Do" is not too creative and very predictable, even the title is bland. I don't dislike it, but I don't adore it either.

Can't say I'm a big fan of When I Said I Do. However, it was the last of thirteen chart toppers for Clint Black. A chart where he was #1 (with his wife):
BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING DECEMBER 4, 1999: 1. WHEN I SAID I DO-CLINT BLACK AND LISA HARTMAN BLACK-RCA 2. Home To You-John Michael Montgomery-Atlantic 3. I Love You-Martina McBride-RCA 4. He Didn't Have To Be-Brad Paisley-Arista 5. Breathe-Faith Hill-Warner Bros. 6. Come On Over-Shania Twain-Mercury 7. Something Like That-Tim McGraw-Curb 8. All Things Considered-Yankee Grey-Monument 9. What Do You Say To That-George Strait-MCA 10. What Do You Say-Reba McEntire-MCA

I'll see if I can put together a top 5 or 10 sometime in the next day or so, but as far as songs you would play at a wedding, I much prefer "Something That We Do" (co-written with the great Skip Ewing) to "When I Said I Do". I just think it's a much more cleverly crafted song.

"Killing Time" has bee hailed by many as Clint's best album. What do people think of "Put Yourself in My Shoes"? I love this album, no bad track on it. From the next album on, Clint goes on a decline. "Loving Blind," "Where Are You Now," and the title track are my favorites. The album I don't quite like is "The Hard Way." If "We Tell Ourselves" were not associated with Black, it would have never been a #2 song!

While I certainly don't think "The Hard Way" was as strong as his first two, it still had some good songs on it. I have always loved "Burn One Down" and "When My Ship Comes In" and I really like "We Tell Ourselves" as well. I think there's a lot of wisdom in it, and there's a lot of great instrumental work in it.

The Hard Way was the first album Clint Black released after the lawsuit he filed against his manager, Bill Ham. We Tell Ourselves became the first #2 hit of Black's career. Here is a chart where Black was #2: BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING AUGUST 15, 1992: 1. Boot Scootin' Boogie-Brooks & Dunn-Arista 2. WE TELL OURSELVES-CLINT BLACK-RCA 3. Take A Little Trip-Alabama-RCA 4. I Feel Lucky-Mary Chapin Carpenter-Columbia 5. I'll Think Of Something-Mark Chesnutt-MCA 6. If You're Heart Ain't Busy Tonight-Tanya Tucker-Capitol 7. This One's Gonna Hurt You For A Long, Long Time-Marty Stuart and Travis Tritt-MCA 8. The River-Garth Brooks-Capitol 9. Runnin' Behind-Tracy Lawrence-Atlantic 10. Billy The Kid-Billy Dean-Capitol

^^ I like every artist mentioned above!!! Yeah that is one hell of a top ten count down! At the risk of derailing, I had to ask myself, what was the other member of the Class of 89, Alan Jackson, doing that week? Answer: he was at 24, on the way up with future #1 "Love's Got a Hold on You". Also, George Strait was right behind him with "So Much Like My Dad", which peaked at #3. I correct my earlier statement: this was one hell of a Top 30!

I actually quite like those two albums - it's probably around One Emotion where things started to go downhill for me. Admittedly I'm not the biggest expert on Clint's discography and it's been a while since I heard many of these albums, so it's possible I may be remembering things wrong. ^^ I love "So Much Like My Dad." Haven't heard this song in the longest while! Easily one of the best and most underrated Strait songs, IMO.
