This one's doing pretty nice for Darius thus far. Up to #16 on both MB and Billboard this week. It hasn't had any rough patches and is the prototype for a steady chart climb. Darius has already been passed by FGL on Billboard and will get passed by them on MB next week but he should leap Chase Bryant on the next MB chart. Reaching the top 15 in his 18th chart week is a good accomplishment and while I expected this to become a hit, I would have guessed a little slower march up the charts than this.
As for the song - I've decided I enjoy everything about this one except for the "Honey, honey, honey. You're so money, money, money" line. The production is fine and I've always been a fan of Darius' vocals. I just wish this song didn't have that repetitiveness in the chorus.

I haven't liked anything from him since "Wagon Wheel" (and it took me forever to get into that one) but I really like Darius, and this one isn't bad! I could see it growing on me.

I hope this one continues to do well. It's definitely one of my favorite Darius Rucker singles and I absolutely love that guitar riff that opens the song. Really though the whole melody to this is just so incredibly strong and makes it one of the catchiest things on radio right now by far.

I've loved nearly everything Darius has released, but "Homegrown Honey" is a huge miss for me. Personally, I just find this to be so far below Darius' talents. And I actually think the lyrics are pretty cringe-worthy, especially the "did your momma teach you how to do that thing you do?" line.
The only other single of his that I don't like is "Come Back Song". HH is only a little bit better than that one for me, and CBS is an instant station-changer.
I loved, loved, LOVED "Wagon Wheel", but "Homegrown Honey" is at the complete opposite end of the spectrum compared to WW. I'm just amazed how Darius can go from a great song like WW to one like this.

I agree, the lyrics in "Homegrown Honey" are just so bad. Darius is really hit or miss for me. I like his voice a lot, but outside of a handful of songs, I haven't really liked his output since he switched to country. I think his hits with Hootie and the Blowfish are, for the most part, much better songs than the ones that he has released to country radio.

Its just Darius's attempt to cash in on the "bro-country" scene. I feel like "Miss You" wasn't actually a true 'bomb' or 'flop'...rather, I feel that its disappointing chart run was the result of it simply not being cost-effective for Capitol Nashville to promote the song to radio. Even "Radio" (the song) struggled a lot--it got up to #3 fairly easily, but its sales were incredibly dismal, and the label probably didn't make much or any money off of that one. So when "Miss You" came out it had a few things working against it...namely, the album wasn't selling at all, the previous single hadn't sold at all, and if radio wanted to play any Darius Rucker material, all they had to do was slot "Wagon Wheel" occasionally into their playlists, since it was already a proven smash hit. Thus, "Miss You" never really stood a chance, and the label pulled it only a few weeks into its chart run, rather than allowing it to limp into the 30's (kinda like Jana Kramer's "Love" just did). Basically, I think if "Homegrown Honey" had been on his last album and had been released in place of "Miss You", HH would have seen the same fate that "Miss You" did. The lyrics of this one are somewhat 'bro-ish' but I think the main reason it's done fairly well is simply because it's a lead single, and that's always a pretty good way for an established artist to grab some momentum again.

This is EASILY my least favorite single of Darius's ever, even more than "True Believers" which I also found to be less than tolerable. I was one of the few that seemed to really enjoy "Miss You" but after "Radio" seemed to underperform (although it really didn't, but it sure felt like it) I understand why MY didn't do well. But "Homegrown Honey" is such an underwhelming effort from the man that brought us "Wagon Wheel" two years ago, "This" a few years prior, and the 4 fantastic singles from his debut album before that. I love Darius's voice, but it can't save this song from being a pain for my eardrums.

I agree that this is his worst song. However, I didn't like History in the Making much either, in part because I found the lyrics underwhelming, and it's the only time I've heard Frank Rogers overproduce something. HITM is almost Frank Liddell levels of brickwalling.

Lol, Frank Liddell is like the best (or at least close to it) in the business; David Nail, Miranda Lambert, Kellie Pickler, and LAW's The Way I'm Livin' all come to mind as having some of the best produced recent albums off the top of my head.

I find that a lot of his stuff is really noisy and cluttered, such as the chorus to "Red Light", "Mama's Broken Heart", etc. Both of those songs have huge walls of hyper-compressed guitars. That said, he can be a very good producer too: "The House That Built Me" was excellently done, as was "Baggage Claim" just off the top of my head.

I thought Mama's Broken Heart and Red Light were well-produced songs, but to each his own.

I think there is a *marginal* amount that can be taken from the charts right now and it's interesting (if nothing else) that this one actually lost more spins over the freeze than Somewhere in My Car.
This was obviously Darius' attempt to get on the bro bandwagon, albeit a little too late. When will these artists learn?
Nonetheless, I love this tune. It's great musically and it's as soulful as you'll ever find a Darius song. The lyrics are just so anti-Darius it's jarring. I think he pulls it off, though. I could see this one getting to 8.

Obvious joke: He cut this piece of bro-country song because it's so money, money, money. As in, that's what he'll make by selling out.

Plus, I don't think this is a big departure for him anyway. Lyrically it's not one of its strongest and it kinda leans on those bro-country tropes, but musically there's nothing different between this and what he's already been doing for three albums. For me, it's a stretch to lump this in the same category that includes "That's My Kind of Night," "Boys 'Round Here," and FGL.

I think the instrumentation is a lot more pop-bro-leaning than anything he's put out before. The songs he did previously at least sounded country (well, except for the horrid brickwalling on "History in the Making").

Oh come on this is not Bro Country. Sure it might sound different but it is Country. Plus most Bro Country songs don't have fiddle and that's what this song has.

The instrumentation on this is very country and I'm not sure that's even disputable honestly. It's right in the same wheelhouse as "Radio" and "This" and many of his other hits.

I think it's a nice balance between his previous hits and current bro country.

The main guitar line doing that distorted chopped-up thing at the beginning is the main thing that doesn't sound "country" to me. I guess more of this song's pop feel is in the melody for me, and I'm just forgetting a lot of the specifics since I honestly can't remember how this song goes 20 minutes after I've heard it.

I think the most country sounding Darius Rucker you will ever get is his take on Wagon Wheel. I think he should look for more songs like that. I would love to see him sink his teeth in a country classic.

That's what I thought when I heard it originally, but I love that riff the guitar plays. After seeing the video, apparently it's dobro which is very much country (obviously). The main thing to me that makes this a Darius song is the soul of it. The lyrics are undeniably more poppy than we've come to expect from him, but when it comes down to it, the musical and vocal delivery is still his style. If I may join buffalocountry in assigning country percentages to each of the songs, I'd say "This" is closest to this (heh) and "Southern State of Mind" is closest to "Wagon Wheel."

Darius Rucker's songs have always been instrumentally quite organic and "country," and I still feel that same sound on this tune. Musically speaking, "I Got Nothin'" is probably his most traditional-sounding outside of "Wagon Wheel." The chorus is mostly steel guitar and there's plenty of fiddle throughout the song as well. Nothing he's put out since "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" has been anything but country through-and-through, and he's really kept a pretty consistent sound/style over the years, too, more so than many of his male contemporaries.

I would love to see him sink his teeth in a country classic. I thought his whole debut album was extremely country sounding, which is almost embarrassing for the genre seeing how he came from Top 40 radio of the 90's. But songs like Live To Learn, It Won't Be Like This For Long, and Don't Think I Don't Think About It are country in every way possible, from the countrified lyrics to the natural twang in his voice.

At the 1:22:00 mark, Rivers announces that he co-wrote Rucker's next single "Southern Style", they sing it and trade verses. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PClgVilVOMThe whole showcase is really good and has some cool stories behind some songs ("Give Me Back My Hometown") is one that's pretty interesting.
