www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6214496/guardians-of-the-galaxy-soundtrack-no-1-billboard-200'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Soundtrack Hits No. 1 On Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield | August 13, 2014 11:05 AM EDT Also, Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" hits No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart. The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack rises to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, becoming the second chart-topping soundtrack of 2014. The blockbuster film's set, subtitled Awesome Mix Vol. 1, sold 109,000 copies in the week ending Aug. 10 (up 83 percent), according to Nielsen SoundScan. It debuted a week ago at No. 3 with 60,000. The 12-song multi-artist collection follows Frozen as the second soundtrack to top the chartthis year. Both albums were released by the Disney Music Group. (The company's Hollywood Records issued Guardians of the Galaxy while Walt Disney Records released Frozen.) 2014 is the first year since 2009 where multiple theatrical film soundtracks reached No. 1. Three movie sets topped the list in 2009: Hannah Montana: The Movie, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Michael Jackson's This Is It Why a '70s Mixtape Propels the Plot of 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Guardians of the Galaxy is an especially notable No. 1 album because it is the first No. 1 soundtrack where the whole album is composed of previously released songs. All of its tunes were released between the late 1960s and late 1970s, and most were chart hits on the Billboard Hot 100. The album and its music play an important role in the movie: They are all on a mixtape in the main character's Walkman, which was given to him by his late mother. (All but one of the soundtrack album's dozen songs are heard in the film, too.) As for the rest of the top 10, the Now 51 compilation enters at No. 2 with 94,000, giving the long-running Now That's What I Call Music! franchise its 57th top 10 album. All 51 of the titles in the main series have hit the top 10, while an additional six Now-branded titles (like Now That's What I Call Christmas! ) have reached the top 10. Godsmack starts at No. 3 with its newest album, 1000HP, selling 58,000. It's the band’s first full-length studio album to not enter at No. 1 since 2000's Awake debuted and peaked at No. 5. Following that project, the act notched three straight chart-toppers with the studio efforts Faceless (2003), IV (2006) and The Oracle (2010). The band also nabbed a top 10 EP in that span of time with The Other Side (No. 5) in 2004. Another rock band, Spoon, rounds out the new arrivals in the top four, as its latest, They Want My Soul, bows at No. 4 with 39,000. It's the third top 10 for the group, which previously visited the region with 2010's Transference (No. 4) and 2007's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (No. 10). Last week's No. 1 album, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' Hypnotic Eye, falls to No. 6 in its second week with 34,000 (down 74 percent). It's right behind 5 Seconds of Summer's self-titled set, which falls 4-5 with 36,000 (down 35 percent). Eric Clapton & Friends' all-star tribute album, The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale, descends 2-7 with 29,000 (down 52 percent). The Frozen soundtrack shifts 6-8 (28,000, down 15 percent), and Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour moves 7-9 (27,000, down 10 percent). New U.K. pop band The Vamps arrive at No. 10 with debut EP Somebody to You. The quartet's effort sells 20,000 and is the fifth EP to debut in the top 10 this year. A year ago at this point, no EPs had arrived in the top 10. Just last week Shawn Mendes' self-titled EP arrived at No. 5. It falls to No. 32 in its second week. Over on the Digital Songs chart, a new No. 1 is crowned, as Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" rises 2-1 with 197,000 downloads sold (up 17 percent). Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj's "Bang Bang" drops 1-2 in its second week, selling 141,000 (down 39 percent). Minaj makes a second appearance in the top three, as her new solo single, "Anaconda," bows at No. 3 with 141,000. She is the first lead act to have two concurrent songs in the top three of the chart since the Sept. 22, 2012 list. That week, Taylor Swift led with "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" at No. 1 and "Ronan" at No. 2. Smith's "Stay With Me" remains at No. 4 on the new Digital Songs chart with 123,000 (down 11 percent), Magic's "Rude" is also steady at No. 5 with 122,000 (down 8 percent), and Jason Aldean's "Burnin' It Down" is another stationary track, sitting at No. 6 for another week (107,000; down 7 percent). Iggy Azalea's "Black Widow," featuring Rita Ora, climbs 8-7 with 106,000 (up 6 percent), and Azalea's "Fancy," featuring Charli XCX, slips 7-8 with 98,000 (down 8 percent). Maroon 5's "Maps" tumbles 3-9 with 97,000 (down 31 percent), and Sia's "Chandelier" moves 9-10 with 91,000 (down 7 percent). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Aug. 10) totaled 4.27 million units, down 1 percent compared with the sum last week (4.33 million) and down 9 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (4.7 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 146.4 million, down 14 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (171 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 20.2 million downloads, down 1 percent compared with last week (20.4 million) and down 8 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (22.1 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 715.6 million, down 13 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (820.2 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: Luke Bryan's Crash My Party debuted at No. 1, selling 528,000 in its first week. K. Michelle's Rebellious Soul arrived in the runner-up spot, selling 72,000.

Quite good 2nd week for Clapton & co and 5SOS should hold on nicely if Amnesia takes off.

I hope MJ can go gold this year. It will definitely get there, just a question of when.

I'd think the combo of sales and shipments may get Xscape to gold-eligible before year's end.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-back-to-the-70s-with-guardians-201323717.htmlChart Watch: Back To The '70s With 'Guardians' SoundtrackBy Paul Grein, Yahoo! Chart Watch It’s too bad that radio legend Casey Kasem died two months ago. I’ve got a feeling he would have loved the soundtrack to Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix, Vol. 1, which jumps from #3 to #1 in its second week on The Billboard 200. After all, he introduced seven of the 12 songs on his weekly American Top 40 countdown. The Five Stairsteps' “O-o-h Child” was on the very first AT40 countdown in July 1970. Rupert Holmes's “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” hit #1 in December 1979, when the show was in its 10th year. The soundtrack also includes three pop hits that predated the launch of AT40 (Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's “Ain't No Mountain High Enough,” the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” and Norman Greenbaum's “Spirit In The Sky”) and two rock classics that didn't fit the show's hit-based formula (David Bowie's “Moonage Daydream” and the Runaways's “Cherry Bomb”). Billboard's Keith Caulfield notes that Guardians Of The Galaxy is the first soundtrack to reach #1 where the entire album consists of previously released material. All 12 songs on the album were released between 1967 and 1979. Nine of them made the top 10 on the Hot 100. Three made #1: the Jackson 5's “I Want You Back,” Blue Swede's “Hooked On A Feeling” and Rupert Holmes's “Escape (The Pina Colada Song).” James Gunn, who directed and co-wrote Guardians Of the Galaxy, spearheaded the use of oldies in the movie. The movie ranked #2 at the box-office after ranking #1 last weekend. The album, which sold 109K copies this week, is the second soundtrack to reach #1 in 2014, following Frozen, which logged 13 weeks on top. This marks the first time that two or more soundtracks to theatrically-released movies have reached #1 during a calendar year since 2009, when the soundtracks to Hannah Montana: The Movie, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Michael Jackson’s This Is It all reached the top spot. With soundtracks having led the chart for 14 weeks so far this year, this is the biggest year for soundtracks since 1998, when Titanic, City Of Angels and Armageddon led the chart for a combined 21 weeks during the year. Guardians Of The Galaxy is also #1 on Top Soundtracks for the second week. Here’s a little background on the three songs on the album that weren’t top 10 hits. Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's original version of “Ain't No Mountain High Enough” reached #19 on the Hot 100 in July 1967. Three years later, Diana Ross took the song to #1. David Bowie's “Moonage Daydream” was a track on his 1972 album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars. The Runaways's “Cherry Bomb” “bubbled under” the Hot 100 (at #106) in August 1976. Now 51, another compilation of hits (albeit much more recent hits),debuts at #2 (94K). All but two of these 51 regular Now volumes have debuted in the top five. All but six have debuted in the top three. Godsmack's sixth studio album 1000hp debuts at #3 (58K). It’s the band’s fifth studio album in a row to make the top five. Even so, it breaks a string of three consecutive #1 albums. (Consolation prize: It’s this week’s #1 album of new music.) The album arrives just four weeks after Sia's similarly-titled 1000 Forms Of Fear debuted at #1. Spoon's eighth studio album, They Want My Soul, debuts at #4 (39K). It’s the band’s second top five album in a row. Transference debuted and peaked at #4 in January 2010. The Vamps's Somebody To You debuts at #10 (20K). This is the fifth EP to hit the top 10 this year, following EPs by 5 Seconds Of Summer, Luke Bryan, Austin Mahone and Shawn Mendes. The British band’s current single, “Can We Dance,” has the fizzy sound of such pop hits as Hot Chelle Rae's 2011 smash “Tonight Tonight.” The song reached #2 on The U.K.'s Official Singles Chart 10 months ago. Ed Sheeran's x holds at #11 for the second week. The album is #1 on The U.K.’s Official Albums Chart for the seventh week. That’s the longest run on top for an album by a British male solo artist since James Blunt's Back To Bedlam spent 10 weeks on top in 2005-2006. Luke Bryan's Crash My Party rebounds from #21 to #12 in its 52nd week. The album logs its 12th week at #1 on Top Country Albums. That’s the longest run for an album by a male solo artist since Jason Aldean’s My Kinda Party had 12 weeks on top in 2011. Boston's Greatest Hits leaps from #159 to #48 in its 24th week. The album jumps to #1 on Top Catalog Albums, displacing Journey's Greatest Hits. Boston’s album has sold 2,234,000 copies since its release in 1997. Coming Attractions:Look for The Gaslight Anthem's Get Hurt, SOJA’s Amid The Noise And Haste and Caleb Johnson's Testify to rank among next week’s top new entries. Johnson was the Season 13 winner on American Idol. (Remember when Idol winners were instant household names? Those days are gone.)

Spoon's album- while not selling Jack-White-like numbers, did 7,000 in vinyl sales- not bad. It had an "unusual" vinyl promotion, per Billboard.

The week previous, it bowed at No. 3 with 60,000 sold. Of course, aside from Guardians of the Galaxy there was -- as usual -- lots of chart action. Let's take a closer look at the rest of the chart: -- "Weird" Al Yankovic, Mandatory Fun - No. 18 - With 167,000 sold, Mandatory Fun has outsold Yankovic's previous release (2011's Alpocalypse, 139,000). The new set is also the biggest-selling comedy album of 2014, and of any year, since 2011 (The Lonely Island's Turtleneck & Chain, with 215,000). -- Various Artists, Now Party Anthems - No. 20 – Two new Now That's What I Call Music! albums arrive on the chart this week, bringing the franchise's total number of charting albums to 97. The latest efforts albums are Now 51 (No. 2) and Now Party Anthems 2 (No. 20). The bow of Now 51 extends Now That's What I Call Music!'s hot streak in the top 10 (57 Now-branded albums have reached the top 10, including all 51 of the numbered titles). -- Al Jarreau, My Old Friend: Celebrating George Duke – No. 69 - Jarreau's tribute to the late Duke (who died in 2013) arrives at No. 69 on the Billboard 200 and at No. 1 on Contemporary Jazz Albums. It's Jarreau's third chart-topper on the latter list, and his first since 2006's Givin' It Up. -- Bruno Mars, Unorthodox Jukebox - No. 70 – The album's up 40 percent after sale pricing at Amazon MP3 and Google Play ($3.99). Its cumulative sales inch closer to surpassing those of his debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2.30 million vs. 2.31 million). -- Eminem, The Marshall Mathers LP - No. 134 - Eminem's album (up 36 percent), along with Nirvana's Nevermind (No. 139; up 44 percent) and Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More (No. 129; up 36 percent) all gain following deep discounting ($1.99) at Amazon MP3 and Google Play. -- Various Artists, Monstercat018 - No. 146 - The EDM series gets its first chart entry on the Billboard 200, selling 2,000 (its best sales week, too). The series has sold just under 100,000 copies since its debut in 2011, but none of the titles have sold more than 10,000. -- Soundtrack, God's Not Dead - No. 147 - The movie's release to home video on Aug. 5 encourages the soundtrack's 145 percent gain. Newsboys, who appear in the film, see their own God's Not Dead album zip 168-64 with a 108 percent rise. -- Billy Joe Shaver, Long in the Tooth - No. 157 - The 74-year old singer/songwriter makes his first appearance on both the Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums (No. 19) with his new album, thanks in part to coverage on NPR's Morning Edition (Aug. 5).
