I hope this CD has a song or two that has a little country influence. Lyrics are my favorite part of country music so I hope she continues to have songs that have great lyrics - even if they're more pop oriented.

From Country Aircheck Today (08/22): ** Since "Shake It Off" was released (and again, note that it has ONLY been sent to Pop and AC, not to country), it's gotten a total of 39 curiosity spins at country stations monitored by Mediabase (most of those stations have only played it twice, but Nashville's WSIX has spun "Shake It Off" 10 times this week, and it's gotten 8 spins at KSCS in Dallas). www.allaccess.com/mediabase/q/report/starters/song/SWIFSIO+/format/C1I added up the audience and it came to 384k. Taylor would probably need between 500 and 600k to sneak into the Billboard top 60, so there is a slight chance that she could indeed sneak onto the bottom of the chart. That wouldn't really be a surprise though--even "I Knew You Were Trouble" briefly made the Billboard top 60 just based off curiosity spins.

NASH-FM(WDRQ)in Detroit just played Shake It Off, so looks like the curiosity spins are growing! I personally like Taylor Swift for her music, not because she was so called country. So I'm probably part of the problem lol. But I could easily see her having a pop album with crossovers to country(not so much Shake it Off)
Edit: And also noticed its the top song for the most downloads on the all access cool new music country chart. But I'm not sure if that means anything, since I do not know much about that chart

Though I would miss Taylor's country singles, I really appreciate her team fully declaring this is her POP album, not pretending it's a mixture or anything. I love Shake It Off and I enjoy it hearing on POP. I still wish some time she'll release a country single again, since All Too Well is still one of my most played songs right now.

According to Billboard Taylor Swift's: "Shake It Off" makes the Hot Country Airplay Chart (BDS/nielsen): #58 Billboard Chart Alert

I'm kind of surprised that country radio would touch it must less for it to chart and calling it country on top of it.

I seem to recall some stations gave "I Knew You Were Trouble." a few curiosity spins, so it getting a handful of plays doesn't shock me.

I seem to recall some stations gave "I Knew You Were Trouble." a few curiosity spins, so it getting a handful of plays doesn't shock me. To be honest, this was expected. However, this time around she even might be logging in a second week since audience impressions are counted. As you mentioned, it already happened with IKYWT, too, where she managed a solitary week at #55 (04/13/2013). "Shake It Off" is already moving down on the Mediabase rolling chart, though. The curiosity factor is already wearing off. drummerman2009NB: I do not recall anybody calling this "country" anywhere. :) If it is played on the big stations it will chart. Please refer to the Avicii's: "Hey Brother" derailment earlier this year

Considering the current state of Country radio, you're surprised this would get some airplay? It's not TOO far from what's currently played... I'm not surprised at all that SIO managed to scrape the bottom of the chart (I posted about it potentially debuting on Billboard here), but I don't agree that it's "not too far from what's currently played". This new song from Taylor is a completely different sound than any of the pop-country on today's country radio. "Shake It Off" is a straight-up pop song that would absolutely bomb if promoted to country radio (and I don't mean that as a slight to Taylor--I love the song, but I have seen dozens and dozens of country stations via social media say that they didn't like it and/or would not play it). If Taylor were to come back with a country single she would undoubtedly have success again at country radio, but she won't with a song like SIO, even if Big Machine went completely crazy and actually thought about promoting it to the country format (which they won't, of course...I'm just saying that if they did, it would not do well at all).

I'd be surprised if many (any?) country stations put this in rotation, but I'm not at all surprised that it's getting played in the earlier days. She has legions of fans, it's topical as something to chatter about on air and get listener feedback ...

I'm surprised that she went ahead and made the announcement that she's going full blown pop. Business wise, it would have been smarter to continue to walk the fine line between country and pop. I'm not really sure what she has to gain from announcing that this album isn't country, aside from eliminating some sales from her country audience that wouldn't buy a pop album. For that reason, I would guess that 1989 sells less than Red in the long run, but that obviously remains to be seen. To me, it would make more sense to try and keep both audiences interested, so I don't really know what her game plan is here. The only artist who has done anything similar to this is LeAnn Rimes, and we all saw how that turned out, so it will be interesting to see how things go for Taylor. She is bigger now than LeAnn was when she made her declaration, but pop radio doesn't seem to be as loyal as country, so she could be shooting herself in the foot. I certainly hope that she isn't nominated for any CMAs after her announcement, though I don't think was going to be anyway.
I'm not a Taylor 'hater' by any means (I have all of her previous albums and I will almost certainly buy 1989 as well). It's just that the way she is marketing this album seems quite odd to me so far, and at this point I can see it being detrimental in the long run.

It's just that the way she is marketing this album seems quite odd to me so far, and at this point I can see it being detrimental in the long run. I disagree, actually. Although this move may hurt Taylor's visibility/sales initially, I don't think it 'll be as big of a blow in the long run. All of her massive crossover hits exploded because of Pop airplay, her massive sales have come from several areas, and she wasn't exactly in favor of most Country fans as of late. I really think she has more to gain than lose here. She has the sales, appeal and acclaim, and she'll be free to express her style without the "is she or isn't she" debate that raged between Country fans. If anything, the might earn her more respect from people who felt like she was simply riding Country's coattails for as long as she could. It always seemed telling to me that Taylor never viciously defended her stance as a Country artist, which made me wonder if that's where she wanted to be. Now we know the answer.

There is nothing wrong with Taylor doing a pop album. While I loved her work in the Country music scene and will miss seeing her at the country music award shows this year and for awhile. Taylor is just doing what she feels is right for her career. Her pop songs last era were the most memorable to the public with "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and "I Knew You Were Trouble.". Taylor is trying out another genre and there is nothing wrong with that. I'm sure Taylor will return to the country scene in the future,I don't think she would totally get rid of her roots.

According to this article by Roughstock ( link), she's not completely abandoning country music: Not surprised about this since I remember some of her old interviews saying when she writes a song, she doesn't think of the genre, she just writes what she wants. I don't know if I'll be a fan or not of this new album, but as I've said, I am still happy that it is fully declared as POP not something confusing for the two genres.

Not sure how much I buy any of that article since there isn't a single direct quote from Taylor Swift herself on the topic, so I'll wait and see.

There are a couple of additional factors probably going into decision to go full-fledged pop: 1) Following Red, this is her best chance to become a major international star; 2) Country radio's lack of slots for women; 3) She's young and wants to try new things - I applaud Taylor for not sticking to the status quo because it's "safe" or "easy."
However, if there was ever an artist who could pull off a Shania by releasing the same album with Pop and Country mixes, it is her. I just hope she continues projecting her self as a class-act, rather than stooping to Miley/Britney type of antics - both personally and showing off her flesh. She doesn't need to do it

I really enjoyed "Begin Again", and just wish that Taylor could put 1 or 2 solid country songs on the new album.
How about re-recording "All Too Well", and releasing it as a single? Okay, I'll stop dreaming now...

Apologies if it's against the rules to be bumping a thread this old, but I believe this interview from today on Tout Le Monde En Parle from Québec is the first time she has been asked in a live interview about leaving the country genre for 1989.

Props to Swift. I've never been a fan but I can respect her honesty. I never liked her at all for quite some time, but got to appreciate her more eventually. I take that quote as very explicit about her current album project/era. For me if you just go by what it says, she stops short of declaring her intent for all time. Time will tell, or a more complete interview ;)

This is projected to sell at least 1.2 million in its opening week, according to Hits. That's absolutely unreal. I thought that her announcement that she was leaving country would hurt her sales, at least initially, but I was obviously dead wrong. The fact that she's in striking distance of the biggest opening ever for a female artist in the current sales climate is absolutely incredible.

I think her leaving country only helps her sell more albums. It's not like country fans are buying albums in droves, at least looking at other releases lately.

Apparently it's for sale on a Microsoft app for only .99 cents too (and they now count again on Billboard because of how low sales are). As for the Country sales thing, I think fans are still buying enough albums. I also think that the whole system is in a downward trend (which will hopefully stabilize/go back up at some point).

I would actually say that country fans as a whole buy more albums than pop fans. There are definitely exceptions, and there's no doubt that album sales are declining, but I think that overall country fans buy more albums than pop fans do.
