www.cnbc.com/id/101931041 Interesting at the three finalists - Coldplay, RiRi, and Katy. Glad they are all rejecting NFL's proposition

This article seems to be missing something. Like, who really thought this would be a good idea? I could maybe see the artist's label shouldering some of the excess production cost if NFL put a cap on things like that, but having the performer pay really makes no sense.

I think Rihanna can pull it off. (Better Than Beyonce).

If you follow the NFL, they are a money-focused machine and because the ratings have gotten huge for regular season games - it's DVR proof - so it can command big $$$. They figure that can get some act to pay for it. I'm glad all three of these have balked - all are mega-successful and certainly don't need SB. However, after lame Bruno Mars - halftime show needs a megastar after Madonna/Beyonce.

Ugh, I don't have a WSJ subscription, so I can't read the whole thing. If someone has one, could you please tell us if that summary is leaving something out, cause it really seems like it is.
I don't get why they thought that Coldplay, Rihanna, and Katy Perry would agree with this. They don't need this publicity or boost, especially Coldplay. They can sell out pretty much any stadium around the world, what would this give them beyond bragging rights? It's not like the other two are facing a music career with 0% bankability right now as well. This would be helpful for an act trying to reach that next level, but this is such a colossal event that it's the biggest acts that have historically played it so it's somewhat counterintuitive.
Then again, it's awesome if you could say that you played the Superbowl, so it might be only a while until somebody bites, but this just seems dumb overall.

The NFL reportedly asked Katy Perry, Rihanna and Coldplay, their top choices to play the 2015 Super Bowl Halftime Show, if they would be willing to pay the league in order to secure one of the biggest gigs in the world, according to The Wall Street Journal. When reaching out to artists, league representatives asked some acts if they would exchange a headlining slot for a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour earnings, or make another type of financial contribution to the NFL. Sources told the Journal that the suggestion, perhaps unsurprisingly, "got a chilly reception from the candidates' representatives." While the NFL doesn't typically pay artists who perform during the Super Bowl Halftime Show, they do tend to cover travel and production expenses, which can be upwards of a million dollars. Considering the Halftime Show has only grown more popular in recent years — this year's performance with Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers drew 115.3 million viewers, compared to the 112.2 million who watched the game — it makes sense they'd want a piece of the pie. The artists themselves do tend to capitalize on the exposure of such a performance as well: Beyoncé announced her "Mrs. Carter Show" world tour right after her performance in 2013, while tickets to Mars' "Moonshine Jungle" tour went on sale the Monday after his Super Bowl set. But quantifying Super Bowl exposure, specifically in the form of ticket sales, is tricky, especially for established artists like Rihanna, Perry and Coldplay who have been grossing millions on the road for years. No decisions have been made about this year's Super Bowl Halftime performer, and as NFL spokeswoman Joanna Hunter noted, the league's contracts with artists are confidential. Super Bowl XLIX will take place outside of Phoenix on February 1st, 2015. Read more: www.rollingstone.com/music/news/nfl-super-bowl-rihanna-coldplay-katy-perry-20140819#ixzz3AtGpNhYE

This still doesn't sound smart. Are they trying to say that Beyonce and Bruno Mars would have had trouble selling tickets for venues that they booked prior to the Superbowl? I highly highly doubt that would have been the case. Aside from press, I still can't see what a big artist would gain from this that they don't already have.

If the NFL is having trouble meeting the expenses of these big acts maybe they should just have a marching band perform for the halftime show. It's gotten to a point now where the expectations for anyone who performs at the SB is so high that everyone comes from it disappointed anyways. They should just pick a popular local band from the area and be done with it.

I didn't really have an issue with them saying they wouldn't pay for the expenses of the halftime show until I read this
That is absurd

I don't know what's worse. Having to pay to play or the thought of Katy Perry being asked to do the halftime show...

That was the part that was missing and it is just absurd. I agree with the above poster that if the NFL is going to get this silly, just bring out a marching band and do away with the half time show. They want their cake and eat it too.

I don't know what's worse. Having to pay to play or the thought of Katy Perry being asked to do the halftime show... I would say that maybe they targeted the people they thought would be either dumb or desperate enough to pay for the exposure (which could be the logic behind targeting younger pop stars who are seemingly about all the exposure they can get), but that doesn't really explain making that request of Coldplay. The whole idea is absurd and unnecessarily greedy - I hardly think the NFL is hurting for anything. I miss the Carrie Underwood rumor already.

The NFL makes so much money from the Superbowl I don't think they should be complaining about paying for the Halftime show. The Halftime show is a selling point for the Superbowl so the NFL should pay for their biggest even of the year. I think if there's a reasonable budget for the show and an artist goes way over it the artist/label should pitch in. I don't think the artist should have to pay for the whole show though. Aren't the ad rates alone 500 thousand- 1mill per spot????

I stan for Katy, but that is an honor she does not deserve at this point in her career. Neither does Rihanna. Coldplay is really the only one of the three that does and even then, they're towards the bottom of the list, IMO. But then again, they got Bruno Mars last year, so... And the fact that they have to pay is absolutely absurd.

And the fact that they have to pay is absolutely absurd. It is rather ridiculous. I understand them not paying the acts to perform because they are getting an incredible amount of exposure, but who is going to pay to perform? I can't see anyone actually agreeing to pay.

Well, if Leona does enough private gigs... ;)
