I've been listening to that live performance of Absence of Affection and I have to say I really like that song too. I can't wait for the recorded version of "The Great Unknown" and "Heaven Help Me".

Hey guys, miss me! I've been out of town for a few days. Anyway, loving ITWFGT. Definitely one of Rob's best recorded songs. I like the acoustic version he played at some early shows but for this song I much prefer the album version with all the production to give some meat to the sound. I just checked out the acoustic version posted above and I have to say that the song played that way sounds a lot like Disease. So how this song can be miles apart from songs Rob has already written is crazy. I just can't get over people saying these new songs aren't Rob. LOL!
Anyway, 11 days away and maybe just 4 for streaming. I think I'll only listen to the first 6 songs on streaming. That will give me the recorded version of Wind Me Up and The Great Unknown. I'll save the rest for next week. :)

I actually went ahead and ordered a copy from Target tonight. Free shipping on all purchases this week only! I don't have any Targets nearby so this was a great opportunity to buy the album with the two bonus tracks.

I need the early stream, I'm really excited to hear this album.
I managed to get tickets to see him in Charlotte so I'm also really excited for that. I've only seen him once before which was when he was in Charlotte with Matchbox in 2013.

I'm hopeful that means that we get a stream of this a week ahead too.

I've looked into it and haven't seen any recently, the last one I remember using was in March. Wishful thinking though

What's up everyone, I'm new to this board.
I'm not sure if they do iTunes streams for new albums anymore but, pandora uses a similar process called pandora premieres.
So, here's to hoping that's what we get on Friday!

First, welcome to the new poster. I look forward to you posts. Second, oh my goodness, 30 second clip of The Great Unknown. Lot's and lot's of production but I love it. I just knew it would have some 80s Phil Collins vibe going on and I think that may be the case. Once again, this is NOT an acoustic album so people that liked the acoustic version of this may be in for a shocker. Can't wait to hear the whole thing. www.amazon.com/Great-Rob-Thomas/dp/B0101H5038/ref=tmm_msc_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1438549055&sr=1-1

The production on that song is fantastic and it brings and atmosphere along with it that I wasn't expecting.

The whole song is available on amazon but not iTunes yet...maybe in the morning. :| So I've only heard the clip so far.
Rob said the album was very diverse. I believe him. Definitely shaping up to be his strongest solo album yet.
Did you listen to the entire song?

It reminds of the first time I heard parade from matchbox because I'm having a similar reaction now. I knew that matchbox was capable of making great songs but I never expected that type of a great song from them. Same situation right here with Rob. A song I didn't know he could make and it's awesome. I hope the people who were expecting an acoustic alt-country style aren't dissapointed. It's not bubblegum pop by any means so I think they'll still enjoy it. Such a great atmosphere.

From the acoustic version, I think many people were expecting an alt-country feel like you said but I think that will be Matchbox Twenty's next album whenever that is and I don't expect that to be any time soon if Kyle has any success with his solo/duo albums.
However, the lyrics do lend themselves to a moody song...how does the song end, "now you just want to get out alive." Rob says this song is also about his wife but I would have never have thought that. I think her health problems have been a downer for a long time.

I didn't know it was about his wife. I've been trying to figure out what the song means but it could have multiple meanings. I was thinking that he was taking us back to the paranoia stage like with unwell. Someone who's worried so much about their surroundings and doesn't want to put themself out there.

Yeah, I wouldn't have thought this song was about his wife at all but I think I got that from one of the few interviews he has done for the album. What's your favorite song? The Great Unknown. What's Mari's favorite song? Again, The Great Unknown....it's about her. However, I agree with you. I think this may have very universal appeal at least in the lyrics for anyone who hasn't had an easy life or has overcome a difficult situation.

I'm getting serious chills listening to that clip of "The Great Unknown". Might be up there in the top 3 favorite songs from him. I'm so tempted to buy it even though I've already purchased the Bonus Track CD from Target.

Lol I already went ahead and purchased it, but if you want to do it for others go ahead! The production on The Great Unknown is certainly thicker and heavier than I expected, but I guess that Rob was serious when he said this would be a pop album. I was hoping for a "Hand Me Down" type sound, instrumentation wise, for The Great Unknown. But this is good too! Just happy to have the studio version.

Now I'm really interested how "Heaven Help Me" is going to sound after hearing the major differences in the acoustic and studio versions of these songs. Tried uploading it, video was blocked worldwide. Oh well I tried.

I completely agree with the comparison to Parade by Matchbox. I remember the first time I heard that song I got crazy chills, it's one of my favorites by them. I had the same experience with this song. Best thing is we only have hear about a third of the album (including the bonus tracks).
And I never thought about the whole thing if Kyle's solo goes well. Personally his music isn't my cup of tea (it's not bad or anything, it's just I'm not a huge fan of country) but I'll be interesting if any of his solo or duo matieral takes off.

Most music critics have been hating on Rob Thomas/Matchbox 20 for a long time. I basically ignore reviews these days. I will be curious what Allmusic.com has to say about it, though.

Yeah, I only read a couple of reviews for North. I saw the word "impersonal" in the title of this one and stopped there. I guarantee Rolling Stone will hate it if they even review it along with some music critic called Ann Powers (maybe some LA paper). Anyway, with Trust You not doing great and probably less than favorable reviews I don't see this album selling much which I hate for Rob as he is very talented and is a great live performer. But hey, that's the way the cookie crumbles. I think I'm going to like this album about as much as I can from Rob at this point in my life. There are two songs that are shaping up to my absolute favorites and if you can get that from any album you are doing good. :) I loved YOSLY back in the day but that was then. I haven't actually listened to that album in years so I'm not the fan that wants Rob to recreate all those songs. We are all here for different reasons. Rob went this direction and we could see him to something totally different the next time....in fact, he may not even be with Atlantic at that time. North didn't sell well and if this one struggles I could maybe see them parting ways. May be for the best anyway. If radio moves on from an artist and your label can't get you performance slots (or any slot) on the TV award shows, I really don't know why a veteran artist needs a major label in today's market anyway. Rob can surely finance his own albums and theater-casino tours at this stage of his career.
I also see something very similar from Kyle. I like Kyle and I think he is a very good guitar player but it's obvious that his love is also songwriting over playing a guitar. So we all know the band has been trying all this collaboration writing with some good and some only fair results so I don't know how that will play out on down the road. If Kyle can get something going where he can actually put together a tour with a backing band I just think that may appeal to him more than going back to a band where there's three people who want to be the primary writer. Just kind of hard all the way around....I'm actually surprised they have managed to do it this long. And for the people who are loving Kyle's music but think Rob's is trash (delicate word versus what I've actually heard), they may prefer that Kyle stay on his own anyway. Again, I can see a round of club dates in October next year for the 20th year thing but no new music this time around. Just my guess....I love speculating! I'm sure everyone in the band will be just fine whatever happens in the next few years.

It is a shame this will go out to so many media outlets. Can't Atlantic buy Rob a good review from at least one publication. Spread that $$$$ around. I'm kidding (well mostly anyway - we all know it happens). Anyway, the fact that Kayne West has been a critic darling for so long just tells me my taste any music isn't any where near what they like.
