I used to really like this song, but I can't handle it coming back from the dead and sticking around for three more months. Knowing Alternative, it'll probably be more like 6.

Why is Meg Meyers Alt but Lorde is not? (Though I've only heard "Desire" so this is a legitimate question) because she's edgier angrier vocals, darker tone, good instrumental section made up of guitars and drumz yah You don't necessarily need to be edgy to be alternative, though... I'd say some of Lorde's album cuts could be considered just as dark in tone, she just prefers to stick to more minimalist electronic production instead of the traditional guitar-driven route. If something like Garbage's "Milk" or Mono's "Life in Mono" had been released today by a new act I'm sure people would be unfairly calling them out for "not being alternative". If anything this era has been the most encouraging for female solo artists on alternative in well over a decade, and I'm a-OK with that

And this is not for nothing, but I've just never been able to get into anything by a solo female. I'd much rather females in actual bands get play on Alternative.

This topic is way better than the song it's for.
Yeah, 80's New Wave was the alternative to hair metal, but that's only scratching the surface. 60's rock 'n' roll was the alternative to Motown (though both were gigantic in their own way), 70's punk was the alternative to disco (and it outlasted disco because it actually developed into something). It wasn't until the 90's when people actually were calling it Alternative that it actually wasn't 'alternative' to anything because it was arguably bigger than any other movement that was taking place around that time. Then there's 2000's Alternative, while glorious in my opinion, was too fad-oriented to be considered an actual alternative to something.
Today's 'rock' music, and all its electronic elements, has more in common with today's pop music and all its electronic elements, really for the first time in the history of music. And that's exactly why we're seeing so much overlap within the two formats. It'll never be as much overlap as 2000's Alternative & Active, but it's still significant.
As for the "Cool Kids" song, I dislike it as much as any song that's hit the chart this year other than "Best Day of My Life" and "Skinny Love". That's not because it sounds like a pop song, but because it sounds like a Taylor Swift song. Not just that the vocals sound alike, but that the singer puts way too much artificial emotion into frivolous subject matter, which Taylor is notorious for.

aside from the somewhat vocal comparison of Taylor and Sidney: you couldn't be farthest from the truth. 1st. Taylor Swift no longer releases decent Country Pop songs, nor has she for a while now.. 2nd. Echosmith is still untainted by the joke music Pop has evolved into. If Echosmith sells out in the years to come, then maybe you can make that comparison, but as of now...Taylor Swift = Echosmith...Please don't insult the band that way.
