Who has been the mastermind behind some of your favorite songs? here are a couple of mine to get started: Brandy Clark- This lady has been on fire recently crafting some great songs. She released her critically acclaimed debut album in 2013. My personal favorites that shes written/had a hand in writing for other artists are: 1.Thats How I'll Remember You/Burnin Bed by David Nail 2.Better Dig Two(#1) by The Band Perry 3.We'll Come Back Around- Craig Morgan 4.Two Rings Shy-Miranda Lambert
Another one that comes to mind is Kyle Jacobs. A lot of the songs hes written for other artists are usually some of if not my favorite songs of theirs. For me hes really only had one BIG miss(hint:DONKEY) but heres my list of favs from him 1.Nashville Without You/Still-my all time favorite Tim Mcgraw songs 2.Dust-Eli Young Band(definently in my top 3 for them) 3.When The Credits Roll-George Strait(Randy Montana was on this one as well :) ) 4.I Can't Outrun You-Trace Adkins/Thompson Square(just so haunting...) I'll post more later

Will list some songs of theirs that I love when I'm not on mobile, but Tom Shapiro, Hillary Lindsey, and even though she's departed from the genre, Taylor Swift. What? No Dallas Davidson anyone? ;) Ah, how could I forget about the modern day Shakespeare?

The references to Dallas Davidson got me thinking and I went through his songwriting credits and was surprised by the songs he's wrote that I liked. Not my favorite songwriter, but still.
"I Don't Dance" by Lee Brice "The One That Got Away" by Jake Owen “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away” by Justin Moore “Tell Me You Get Lonely” by Frankie Ballard “Back In The Day” by Brantley Gilbert “Back To God” by Randy Houser "Footprints On The Moon" by Tracy Lawrence "Dirt Road Diary" by Luke Bryan "Granddaddy's Gun" by Aaron Lewis “I Won’t Go Crazy” by Josh Thompson “Little Sundress” by Chris Cagle “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” by Josh Gracin
I mean there's the bro-country movement he's had a large hand in, but still, there's some real quality material in his catalog. Not a defense, just saying!
I'll think of some others later. I do especially like material artists record that they have written themselves like, Trent Tomlinson, Brantley Gilbert, and Kevin Denney are a few of the modern guys that I like.

^ Jim Lauderdale also co-wrote "Tough All Over" on Gary Allan's stellar album of the same name.
Another writer who I enjoy, who had a cut on that particular album was Kostas who wrote "Ring" for Gary's Tough All Over album. Some of his other credits include:
"Timber, I'm Falling In Love" - Patty Loveless "The Night's Too Long" - Patty Loveless "Blame It On Your Heart" - Patty Loveless "On Down The Line" - Patty Loveless "Ain't That Lonely Yet" - Dwight Yoakam "What A Crying Shame" - The Mavericks "Slave To The Habit" - Shane Minor "Life #9" - Martina McBride "I Can Love You Better" - Dixie Chicks

I wanted to add that Mary Chapin Carpenter is likely one of the most talented female songwriters of our generation. She writes and composes most if not all of the material for her albums. She has such an interesting way of framing the words that give you a complete 360 view of the entire song. If you have missed some of her material since she became less mainstream I suggest checking out Between Here and Gone and The Age of Miracles.

Just recently discovered Travis Meadows. He hasn't written a lot for other artists but what he has written is pretty much gold. My favs from him that he had in cowriting are: Jake Owen- "What We Ain't Got" Dierks Bentley-"Riser"(title track from his latest album) Eric Church- "Dark Side"(one of the best from his latest album) Aside from that he helped write "Cherry On Top" for Jake Owen and "Don't You Wanna Fall" for Frankie Ballard

Who are your favorite songwriters? Here are mine:
1. Hugh Prestwood ("The Song Remembers When," Trisha Yearwood, "Ghost in This House," Alison Krauss/Shenandoah, "Bing Bang Boom," Highway 101)
2. Paul Overstreet ("Long Line of Love," Michael M Murphey, "She Thinks My Tractor is Sexy," Kenny Chesney, "Love Can Build a Bridge" The Judds)
3. Richard Leigh ("Greatest Man I Never Knew" Reba, "Somewhere in My Broken Heart," Randy Travis/Billy Dean, "Voices Singing," Ricky Skaggs/Billy Dean)
4. Dennis Linde ("Ten Pound Hammer" Barbara Mandrell/Aaron Tippin, "Goodbye Earl," Dixie Chicks, "When I Say Forever," Chris LeDoux)
5. Beth Nielsen Chapman ("Five Minutes" Lorrie Morgan, "This Kiss" Faith Hill, "Strong Enough to Bend" Tanya Tucker, "Here We Are" Alabama)
6. Matraca Berg ("Lying to the Moon," Trisha/Matraca, "The Last One to Know," Reba, "Strawberry Wine," Deana Carter)
Sadly one is dead, and the rest don't write as frequently these days. Overstreet still does, not sure about the others.

Pretty much anything he touches is gold. Right now "West Texas Rain" by Wade Bowen is my favorite Meadows co-write, but I go back and forth. He's also recorded a couple solo albums that are really solid.

I would also include Hank Cochran , Tommy Collins & Whitey Shaffer & Billy Joe Shaver but for every writer I start I think of two more.
I'm skipping Tom T. Hall ,Alan Jackson , Vern Gosdin, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson & Dolly Pardon. All had wonderful and huge catalogs but Id be here all day if I included singer-songwriters.
