Bill AndersonWhen A Man Cant Get A Woman Off His Mind Saginaw, Michigan The Tips Of My Fingers I May Never Get to Heaven I Never Once Stopped Loving You Give It way Country One Small Mircle Once A Day The Lord Knows I'm Drinking Which Bridge to Cross (Which Bridge to Burn) I Don't Love You Anymore Cold Coffee Morning Whiskey Lullaby Bill also co-wrote "I'll Wait For You" with the late Harley Allen. I still think it's Joe Nichols' best single, although it was pretty overplayed by the end of its chart run in 2007.

Paul Overstreet (his solo stuff is stellar too): "Forever and Ever, Amen", "Love Can Build a Bridge", "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy", "Some Beach", "A Long Line of Love", "On The Other Hand" , "When You Say Nothing At All".
Bob McDill : "Amanda" , "Another Place, Another Time" , "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On", "Don't Close Your Eyes", "Everything That Glitters Is Not Gold", "Gone Country" , "Good Ole Boys Like Me", "It Must Be Love", "Louisiana Saturday Night", "Rednecks, White Socks and Blue Ribbon Beer", "Song of the South", and the list goes on an on
Hank Cochran: "Make The World Go Away", "The Chair", "Ocean Front Property", "It's Not Love But It's Not Bad", "A-11", and alot of other classics
Don Cook: "Brand New Man", "Even The Man In The Moon Is Cryin", "Hopelessly Yours", "It's Getting Better All The Time", "Julia", "Lady Lay Down" , "Lost and Found", "My Next Broken Heart", "Only In America", "What I Meant To Say", "Who's Lonely Now". Frequent collaborator of Brooks & Dunn and Keith Whitley
I would definately have to agree with Dean Dillon for all the King George songs, also Willie Nelson, Chris Stapleton, Dolly Parton (very underrated as a songwriter), Merle Haggard, Chick Rains, Sanger D. Shafer and Bill Anderson.

Do people also buy CDs of songwriters? Years ago, Jill Colucci (Travis Tritt "Anymore," Michelle Wright "He Would be 16"), Jon Vezner (Kathy Mattea "Where Have You Been") and Kostas (Patty Loveless "Blame it on My Heart") each released solo albums for Capitol Records. I only got the Jill album, don't own the other two. Now, they are deleted! Man, I m living in regret now.

Since we've been talking about Harley Allen, it's also worth noting that he wrote "Everything I Love" and "Between the Devil and Me" off Alan Jackson's Everything I Love album. Both great songs.

I'm glad someone mentioned Bill Anderson's "The Tips of My Fingers" which was covered by a number of artists, including Steve Wariner, which was the version I first heard. Love that song. Also, Richard Leigh's best known song was probably "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue", sung by Crystal Gayle.

One of my personal favorites is Wendell Mobley: Alabama-We can't love like this anymore Kenny Chesney-There Goes My Life, How Forever Feels Randy Houser-How Country Feels Rascal Flatts-I Melt Reba-Strange
And the most catchy and annoying commercial jingle ever "NAPA KNOW HOW"

Great informative post, Uncle Lumpy. I confess the names Tony Layne and Wayne Kemp were new to me. I was unaware of how many of my favorite songs they'd written!

Great informative post, Uncle Lumpy. I confess the names Tony Layne and Wayne Kemp were new to me. I was unaware of how many of my favorite songs they'd written! Thanks. I really can't emphasize just how great Tony is. For awhile there , I was going to the Broken Spoke twice a week and patiently waiting for his set(s). Wayne wasI a decent singer in his own right and one Hell of a guitar player to boot. He was in George Jones' band in the 60s. Weird / funny story concerning one of Wayne's songs. My dad was a struggling singer songwriter and would always walk around singing when I was a kid... Or Hell , even today. A lot of the songs he would sing and hum were his own songs which are ingrained in me. I remember buying the George Strait album in the mid 80s when I was a teenager with "Haven't You Heard" on it. And I was CRUSHED as I inocently assumed that it was one of my dads songs. He would later explain it was just one of his favorite songs.

I'm trying to stick to songwriters who are better known for their writing than their singing (so Mary Chapin Carpenter wouldn't count, but Lori McKenna would)
Lori McKenna Gretchen Peters Matraca Berg Liz Hengber Tommy Lee James Mark D. Sanders Luke Laird Shane McAnally

I would have to say that some of my favorites are writers who have written some of the classics of my era (80s and 90s). Three of my favorites are Dean Dillon, Skip Ewing, and Tony Arata.

sabre14, have you heard any of the material Tim recorded in Turner Nichols? "Moonlight Drive In" and "She Loves to Hear Me Rock" were quite strong songs, and I think they could've broken out had they had a chance.

Did not know Tim was in a duo. Tim did co-write "She Cranks My Tractor" though...

I'd be lying if I said I ever heard Blaze Foley sing, but he's written some damn good tunes other artists have recorded/covered:
John Prine - Clay Pigeons Lyle Lovett - Election Day Merle Haggard - If I Could Only Fly
