www.billboard.com/articles/news/6229430/wiz-khalifa-number-1-billboard-200-taylor-swift-shake-it-offWiz Khalifa Earns First No. 1 Album On Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield, L.A. | August 27, 2014 Meanwhile, Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" blasts in at No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart with a massive debut. Hip-hop star Wiz Khalifa earns his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, as his new Blacc Hollywood set arrives atop the list. The album, which was released Aug. 19, sold 90,000 copies in the week ending Aug. 24, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Blacc Hollywood follows two No. 2-peaking albums from Khalifa: Rolling Papers and O.N.I.F.C., which were released in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Khalifa also bounds in at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and the Rap Albums chart. Last week's No. 1, the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, falls to No. 2 with 64,000 (down 30 percent). Country singer Chase Rice owns the second-highest new entry, as his Ignite the Night steps in at No. 3 with 44,000. It also opens at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart. The album's current single, "Ready Set Roll," spends a second week at No. 12 (its peak) on the Hot Country Airplay chart. The album was released through Dack Janiels Records and distributed through Red Distribution (Sony Music's independent distribution arm). Rice first gained fame as a contestant on the CBS TV series "Survivor: Nicaragua" in 2010. He later co-wrote Florida Georgia Line's massive single "Cruise" (No. 1 for a record 24 weeks on Hot Country Songs). Back on the new Billboard 200, the Now 51 compilation dips 2-4 with 33,000 (down 36 percent). The star-studded country compilation Nashville Outlaws: A Tribute to Motley Crue kickstarts at No. 5 with 31,000 and also drives in at No. 2 on Top Country Albums. Released on Big Machine Records, the set includes reworkings of Motley Crue tunes by acts like Rascal Flatts ("Kickstart My Heart"), Brantley Gilbert ("Girls, Girls, Girls") and Justin Moore ("Home Sweet Home," featuring Motley Crue's Vince Neil). The Frozen soundtrack slides 3-6 with 29,000 (down 33 percent), Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour holds at No. 7 with a little more than 24,000 (down 6 percent), and 5 Seconds of Summer's self-titled set decends 6-8 with 24,000 (down 12 percent). Former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley nets his highest-charting album (and first top 10), as Space Invader debuts at No. 9 with 19,000 sold. It surpasses the No. 26 peak of his previous highest-charting album, his self-titled 1978 debut, released at the height of Kiss mania. Space Invader is Frehley's first album since 2009's Anamoly debuted and peaked at No. 27 with a 17,000 sales start. Ed Sheeran's x rounds out the top 10, returning to the region (12-10) with 16,000 (down 12 percent). Over on the Digital Songs chart, Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" blasts in at No. 1, selling 544,000 downloads in its first week — the biggest sales week of 2014 and the fourth-largest debut week ever. The only starts that were larger were logged by Flo Rida's "Right Round" (636,000 in 2009), Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" (623,000 in 2012) and Katy Perry's "Roar" (557,000 in 2013). "Shake It Off" is the first single from Swift's upcoming fifth studio album, 1989, which is due to be released Oct. 27. The song was released commercially on Monday, Aug. 18. Last week's Digital Songs No. 1, Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass," falls to No. 2, despite a sales gain. It sold 283,000 downloads (up 18 percent). Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj's "Bang Bang" is also pushed back even though it makes a gain, as the diva team-up slips 2-3 with 159,000 (up 21 percent). Like many of the songs in the top 10, this track benefits from a performance on the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, which were broadcast Aug. 24, the final day of the latest sales tracking week. "Bang Bang" was one of the three songs that opened the awards show, as Grande also performed her own "Break Free" and Minaj did her single "Anaconda." The latter track slithers 24-6 with 120,000 (up 132 percent) following the double-whammy of the VMAs performance and the Aug. 20 premiere of its music video. Iggy Azalea's "Black Widow," featuring Rita Ora, moves 3-4 with 142,000 (up 14 percent), and Smith's "Stay With Me" holds at No. 5 with 122,000. Both were also performed on the VMAs. Clean Bandit's "Rather Be," featuring Jess Glynne, climbs 8-7 with 104,000 (up 9 percent). Charli XCX's "Boom Clap" steps 12-8 with 97,000 (up 22 percent) after it was performed on the VMA’s pre-show. Sia's "Chandelier," which was nominated for a number of VMAs -— including video of the year — rises 10-9 with 96,000 (up 3 percent). It wasn’t performed on the show, but did take home a non-televised category: best choreography. Magic's "Rude" closes out the top 10, descending 7-10 with 88,000 (down 15 percent). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Aug. 24) totaled 3.97 million units, down 3 percent compared with the sum last week (4.11 million) and down 19 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (4.9 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 154.5 million, down 15 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (181 million). This week's 3.97 million total is the smallest weekly sum for album sales since SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. It's also the first time weekly sales have fallen below 4 million in that time span. Digital track sales this past week totaled 19.2 million downloads, down 2 percent compared with last week (19.6 million) and down 13 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (22.1 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 754.4 million, down 13 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (865.4 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: Avenged Sevenfold's Hail to the King debuted at No. 1 with 159,000, while the previous week's leader, Luke Bryan's Crash My Party, fell to No. 2 with 92,000 (down 42 percent).

By far his worst-selling album since he got big. His first number one.
The music industry in 2014, ladies and gentlemen.

Wow, I did not expect that to happen in 2014, but it did, first time below 4 million... The sales total for the no.10 album has to be a historic low as well, right?

Sales should perk up a tad next week, at least.

^Yes, Sept/Oct will be busy.
I knew this would happen.
It happened last August as well.

Does that mean three years until weekly sales fall below 1m?
I don't buy CDs regularly as I used to, and I'm not big on digital albums. I haven't purchased an individual track in some time, and i don't pay for a music service.

Ed Sheeran's album is having a really great hold when you consider that it doesn't have a single high at radio right now. It'll be interesting to see what'll happen if Don't really takes off like callout scores might be suggesting.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-third-times-the-charm-for-wiz-khalifa-174047115.htmlChart Watch: Third Time's The Charm for Wiz KhalifaBy Paul Grein, Yahoo! Chart Watch The third time proved to be the charm for Wiz Khalifa, whose third solo studio album through a major label, Blacc Hollywood, enters The Billboard 200 at #1 this week (90K). Rolling Papers, his first album through a major label, debuted and peaked at #2 in April 2011. O.N.I.F.C., his second, debuted and peaked at #2 in December 2012. The current album has produced one Hot 100 single, “We Dem Boyz.” It has climbed as high as #43. The title of Wiz Khalifa’s album plays off of such past album titles as Henry Mancini's Our Man In Hollywood (#12 in 1963). Wiz Khalifa has some experience in Hollywood (if not at the same level as Mancini, a four-time Oscar-winner). Wiz and Snoop Dogg starred in and recorded the soundtrack for Mac & Devin Go To High School, a 2011 straight-to-DVD stoner comedy. Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix, Vol. 1 dips from #1 to #2 in its fourth week (64K). It’s #1 on Top Soundtracks for the fourth week. The movie returned to #1 at the box-office over the weekend, after falling behind Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the last two weekends. It’s the first movie to return to #1 (after being displaced) since Frozen scored in January. Is it just a coincidence that both of these movies spawned soundtracks that reached #1? No. The music was a big factor in keeping the movies up there. Chase Rice's third studio album, Ignite The Night, debuts at #3 (44K). It enters Top Country Albums at #1, displacing Luke Bryan's Crash My Party. Rice first came to prominence as a contestant on the CBS series Survivor: Nicaragua in 2010. His greatest claim to fame is that he co-wrote Florida Georgia Line's “Cruise,” the best-selling country hit in digital history. “Ready Set Roll” is currently bulleted at #66 on the Hot 100. Nashville Outlaws: A Tribute To Motley Crue debuts at #5 (31K). It also enters Top Country Albums at #2. We posted a separate Chart Watch blog on that earlier this morning. If you missed it, here’s a link. Ace Frehley's sixth solo studio album, Space Invader, debuts at #9 (19K). It’s his first top 10 album on his own. (His previous highest-charting album was his eponymous 1978 solo debut, which peaked at #26.) Frehley amassed five top 10 albums with KISS, from Alive! (#9 in 1975) to Psycho-Circus (#3 in 1998). (The band has notched four other top 10 albums without him.) Frehley is the first current or former member of that famous foursome to land a top 10 album on his own. Ed Sheeran's x rebounds from #12 to #10 in its ninth week (16K). The album dips to #2 on The U.K.’s Official Albums Chart, ending an eight-week run in the top spot. The new #1 there is by Britain’s Got Talent winners Collabro. Smokey Robinson's Smokey & Friends debuts at #12. The album features Robinson in duet versions of his past hits with such stars as Elton John, John Legend, Mary J. Blige and James Taylor. An album with a similar format and title, Alabama's Alabama & Friends, debuted and peaked at #8 in September 2013. Robinson first cracked the top 20 in January 1966 with Going To A Go-Go, which he recorded with the Miracles. He first cracked the top 20 on his own in February 1980 with Where There’s Smoke… Buckcherry's F*** debuts at #38. (They spell the word out; Yahoo doesn’t.) Van Halen reached #1 in July 1991 with an album titled For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. But now I guess there’s no need for clever word games. Incidentally, Buckcherry’s label is F-Bomb Records. Florida Georgia Line's debut album, Here’s To The Good Times, tops the 2 million sales mark this week. The album reached #4 on The Billboard 200 and logged 10 weeks at #1 on Top Country Albums. It includes the monster hit “Cruise,” which (as noted above) is the best-selling country hit in digital history. As of last week, it had sold 6,979,000 copies. Bad News: Overall album sales in the week ending Aug. 24 totaled 3.97 million units. That’s the smallest weekly sum since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking music sales in 1991. Boston's 1997 album Greatest Hits rebounds from #156 to #73 in its 26th week. It returns to #1 on Top Catalog Albums after being displaced last week by Robin Williams's Weapons Of Self Destruction. Coming Attractions: Ariana Grande's sophomore album My Everything is a lock to debut at #1 next week (150K). Three other albums are eyeing top 10 debuts: Brad Paisley's Moonshine In The Trunk (50K), KEM'sPromise To Love (35K) and Avenged Sevenfold's Waking The Fallen (20K).

I'm pretty sure this is the other way around. Massively popular movies are keeping the soundtracks up there...

Blacc Hollywood sold 90,000 copies in its first week (ending Aug. 24), according to Nielsen SoundScan. It was well ahead of the No. 2 title, the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, which fell from the top slot. Of course, there was lots of chart action elsewhere on the chart. Let's take a closer look: – Smokey Robinson, Smokey & Friends - No. 12 – The R&B icon, whose legendary chart career stretches back nearly 55 years, earns his highest debut ever on the Billboard 200 with his new Smokey & Friends collection. The all-star collaborations album debuts at No. 12 with 14,000 sold and is also his highest-charting release since 1981, when Being With You climbed to No. 10 on the chart dated June 6, 1981. Smokey & Friends features Robinson duetting with the likes of Elton John, Steven Tyler and Mary J. Blige on a dozen of Robinson's old hits. Robinson first appeared on a Billboard chart back on Oct. 5, 1959, as part of the R&B group The Miracles. That week, their single "Bad Girl" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, and peaked at No. 93. With The Miracles, Robinson enjoyed Hot 100 hits such as "Shop Around" (No. 2 in 1961), "I Second That Emotion" (No. 4 in 1967) and "The Tears of a Clown" (No. 1 in 1970). – Kimbra, The Golden Echo - No. 43 – Kimbra, who broke through big time in 2012 with Gotye on his single "Somebody That I Used To Know," returns with her second album, starting at No. 43 with 6,000 sold. Her first album, 2012's Vows, debuted and peaked at No. 14 with a 22,000 start. Kimbra has yet to chart another single on a Billboard chart after "Somebody That I Used To Know," which is the fourth-biggest selling digital song of all time (7.7 million downloads) and won her two Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year. – Soundtrack, If I Stay – No. 54 — The multi-artist soundtrack, which features contributions from Beck, Sonic Youth and The Orwells, debuts with 5,000 sold. The movie, based on the book of the same name, was the No. 3 movie at the U.S. and Canada box office over the Aug. 22-24 weekend. It earned $15.7 million, according to Box Office Mojo. – Various Artists, The Cocktail Hour - No. 95 – This Starbucks-exclusive compilation features artists like Eartha Kitt, Ray Charles and Serge Gainsbourg. It debuts with 3,000 sold. Also on board for the ride inside the CD's package: cocktail recipes for drinks like the Singapore Sling and the Temporary Getaway (champagne and elderflower liqueur with orange juice, lemon juice and apple slices). – Amy Grant, In Motion: The Remixes - No. 110 – The veteran pop singer arrives with her first dance remix album, In Motion: The Remixes, debuting with nearly 3,000 sold. The set features high-charting oldies from Grant like her No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit "Baby Baby" remixed by notable dance remixers and producers. "Baby Baby," for example, is reworked by Dave Aude. Other remixers on the set include Moto Blanco, Tony Moran, Hex Hextor, Ralphi Rosario and Chris Cox. The album also debuts at No. 8 on Top Christian Albums and No. 5 on Dance/Electronic Albums, making it one of the few titles to reach the top 10 on both tallies.
