I can listen to "Bob That Head" unironically if I tune out Gary's screeching at the very start.

^ There was the radio edit that cut out the intro. I thought it was an improvement. Then cut it off before the second screech near the end.

I'll never be a huge fan as I find him to be a pretty weak vocalist , but if theres more like the title cut I'm on board.

To add insult to the injury of purchasing a Tyler Farr song , I don't really care for George Straits new single. To be fair , I haven't heard the studio version yet , but I'm not feeling the tropical vibe at all.
When I was a teenager , I really wanted to be Dwight Yoakam, right down to the jeans. I was scarecrow skinny and couldn't find Levi's tight enough off the shelf so I taught myself to sew in order to get the right fit. I actually got quite good at it & nobody was the wiser. I also proved that wearing tight jeans in no way prevents you from having kids.

-Despite having made a conscious effort over the past five years to hear all the great country albums, I still haven't heard Stardust, Will the Circle Be Unrbroken, Live at the Old Quarter, Grievous Angel or Wanted! The Outlaws yet, despite having had them on my hard drive for years. And I only listened to At Folsom Prison and At San Quentin for the first time within the past few months.
-Despite being outraged as anyone over the uphill climb female artists face, both today and historically, in my personal listening habits I gravitate overwhelmingly more towards male artists/vocalists for reasons I can't explain. In fact, I barely listen to female artists at all (maybe 15% of the time), and it has resulted in embarrassing gaps in my knowledge of country music. Part of the reason is that there are significantly more male artists in general (the '90s are really the only decade in which females were played in great numbers), but the split shouldn't be this drastic. It's something I'm actively trying to get better at because I enjoy female artists just as much as male artists when I actually choose to listen to them, and have no idea why I don't do so more often.

Have gone country astray again lately as I have developed some inapprehensible liking of Phillip Phillips.. Had dismissed Phillip Phillips for being on American Idol and never bothered; now I have to say that his two studio albums are really great, he seems to be genuinely gifted and the live and acoustic sessions just rock! His latest album "Behind The Light" is especially good! Have discovered him via Dave Eggar who plays in his tour band and did some bluegrass sessions with Amy Lee (formerly from Evanescence).

I actually really like Tyler Farr. Even his songs considered bro-country are smartly done bro-country.

Confession: i detest most bro county, if not all of it. I am a staunch traditionalist. However, as the only one here on Pulse, I actually kinda like Tyler Farr C.O.U.N.T.R.Y. Not sure why lol. It could have been a lot worse judging by the title. It's just fun and luckily will probably never be a single. It's windows down type of stuff. I actually can understand everything he's saying too. I guess it's cuz I know plenty of people who talk like that lol.

I made it all the way thru Ridiculous and I didn't flinch. (Still a bad song)
I loved Kelsea Ballerini debut album so much yet I've heard scathing things on it online.

Thomas Rhett's "It Goes Like This" came on the radio just a couple of minutes ago and I caught myself tapping with the foot and humming to it...

This will be the closest thing to a positive comment I will probably ever make about Sam Hunt.
So I woke up yesterday morning to "House Party" (on a pop station no less). And before my brain could really get its bearings and discern what it was listening to my first thought was: "that guys got a pretty good voice". I couldn't have been more disgusted with myself if I open mouth kissed a blood relative.
Incidentally , did Sam's appearance on the CMT awards the other night kick anyone else's Gaydar into hyper drive? His stage presence and actions just seemed super effeminate to me...
Edited to add: And what in the hell was he wearing? And is that Adolf Hitler looking hairstyle "in"?

Back in 6th grade i finished the only complete song i ever wrote (I've started several but they never took off). Now as an immature middle schooler, I must have thought that a song titled "Cow Tippin' (Skinny Dippin')" was the best idea ever.......now I realize it could probably be Blackjack Billy's next single

I hate bringing up threads I've made but...
You know, considering that guys like Chris Stapleton, Dwight Yoakam, Kacey Musgraves, Sam Outlaw, Jason Isbell. ..etc are pushing for Americana airplay really makes me wonder if I should just stop calling myself a country fan and start calling myself an Americana fan. Unfortunately "Country" today doesn't mean "Country", and the people who are playing either actual country music and/or stuff that branches out a little but is still rooted in country, are forced to call themselves something else - Americana.

The first time I listened to Metamodern Sounds in Country Music and heard "It Ain't All Flowers", I was completely into it and had the volume on my speakers turned way up. You know that part towards the end when Sturgill (or someone) emits that loud scream out of nowhere? It scared the bejeesus out of me, I was completely confused and disoriented for a few seconds and thought somebody outside was being attacked or something until I realized it was part of the song.

I know it's pretty much a psychedelic rock song instead of a country one, but it's probably my favorite Sturgill song. And I know, I actually converted my friend (who's a heavy metal fan) onto that song just by playing him that one part lol

I'll be honest, I don't have a clue what call-out scores are, is that like what the listeners think or what?

I'll be honest, I don't have a clue what call-out scores are, is that like what the listeners think or what? Call-out scores are surveys of different demographics to get feedback on current radio singles. Depending on the call-out service, a certain number of people are asked if they liked a song, loved a song, was neutral to a song or disliked it; and how familiar they are with it (have they heard the song) as well as how tired they are of hearing it. That's how you get percentage numbers for "positive", "negative", "burn rate", "familiarity". Typically stations use call-out scores as one way to determine which songs to increase or decrease in rotation. Sales are another factor that can influence a single's success. Not all stations look at the same call-out services, and stations might rely on certain demo's more than others -- it all depends on the station. Call-out scores are the main reason that "Real Life" is stalling. It has the highest negative score and the lowest positive score out of all the songs in the top 30 right now, on the National Call-Out service that's provided by MB. It's total negative on that call-out service was 30% last time I checked, which is horrible.

Confession: I thought that "Country Must Be Country Wide" was sung by Chris Cagle until just a couple months ago. Why would I assume it was sung by an obsolete C-lister from over a decade ago who has had like one hit since I hit puberty? I literally have no idea... Maybe I just thought it sounded like him and never had any reason to check otherwise.

I confess that Donkey was my least favorite country song last year by a mile and a half...This year I don't know if it would make my top 5.

I have never been a supporter of auto-tune. I do not like it, and I tend to really gravitate towards the artists who obviously do not use it (Martina being a prime example... Lol)
That being said, I absolutely LOVE the auto-tune used in George Strait's "Stars On The Water". It is blatant enough to sound different, yet subtle enough to make you pay attention and think, "Wait, what the heck just happened?" It is used for a specific stylistic purpose that is unique and totally unexpected. And, despite the vocal bending, it's still one of the most country songs you could ever hear. Leave it to George to be the only artist to use autotune creatively and tastefully in a way that I approve of.

I don't mind Auto-Tune if it enhances the song and isn't just being used to clean up a sloppy vocal. For instance, I agree with you that it works stylistically on "Stars on the Water", and I didn't mind it on "Drink to That All Night". (That's my next confession if I haven't made it already: I genuinely enjoyed "Drink to That All Night".)
The Auto-Tune on Joe Nichols' Old Things New, however, was some weird uncanny valley half-assed effort that made him sound like C-3PO on half the songs. Likewise "Merry Go Round" by the JaneDear girls. The whole song seemed like it had a very weak, unconvincing production, up to and including the very haphazardly placed Auto-Tune. The whole song had the energy of a snail.
That said, I can't stand hearing Auto-Tune!Jason Derulo warble out "JaaaaAaaaAaaason DeruUuUuUuUuUuUlooooo~" at the start of all of his songs.

I actually found myself singing along to Country Girl (Shake It For Me) last weekend.
It is very catchy despite the lyrics.
I did at least catch myself before I actually sang about "shaking it for the squirrels" :o
