Inspired by the similar poll currently going on, which of these female pop stars had the biggest impact on pop culture during their peak/prime years?
Some things to consider when voting:
-Whose album(s) were selling the most during their peak? (Consider the time period during which their albums were released i.e. who sold a lot of albums for that time period) -Who was getting the most airplay on radio stations during their peak and across multiple formats/crossover success? -Who had the biggest and hottest tour going on during their peak? -Who was in magazines and on newstands everywhere the most during their peak? -Who had the most TV guest appearances, interviews, performances, TV specials, etc during their peak?
Basically, this is a popularity contest.
Vote.

I'm going to abstain from voting since I was too young to be fully aware of the cultural impacts during Madonna, Whitney and Mariah's peaks. Those three notwithstanding, I'm actually going with GaGa. There was a palpable fever and excitement about her music and image during the Fame/Fame Monster era, she was a prominent force underlying the EDM wave and for a minute, it seemed like there were a half-dozen female pop stars attempting to channel her wacky/irreverent performances and persona.

Culturally Madonna and Britney
Musically Mariah. Her bag was all about vocal talent, hit songs, albums and music. She didnt have the same MEDIA presence as the other two, but when you're immensely talented sometimes music alone gives you that impact on people, peers and the industry. Her musical output was the most felt in her peak.

Do you compare the artists by giving each aspect a point and counting all the points together?

Madonna. It's not a contest. Seriously. Anyone considering the other options for this question has a serious lack of knowledge and/or understanding.

1 Madonna - no one comes close here 2 Lady Gaga 3 Britney Spears 4 Whitney Houston 5 Adele Agreed with this ranking (except maybe replace Adele with Mariah at #5). Gaga's pop culture influence at her peak was massive. As was Britney's. That said even they don't come close to Madonna's pop culture influence peak.

Good, bad, or otherwise Madonna made the most impact on popular culture during her prime. But a small shout out to Shania because she did impact the country music genre during her prime a lot and when she first came on the scene was considered the "country Madonna".

1. Madonna (She was the blueprint for Pop Stars i.e. Britney Spears, Lady Gaga with goals more towards "Liberation") 2. Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston (They birthed the Diva Singers with more emphasis towards vocals i.e. Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga) 3. Janet Jackson (She was the blueprint for African American singers that wanted to dip in the Pop Pool and give Choreography while also showing growth and liberance for days i.e. Ciara, Aaliyah, Beyonce to an extent as well) 4. Shania Twain (Blueprint for the Country Girl goes Pop Route i.e Taylor Swift, Leann Rimes, etc)
I believe that these women's cultural impact, may they have been influences as well, allowed for others to have such an impact as they did. I didn't put Britney on that list because I feel that she came packaged with a certain "movement" that happened during her time. She excelled as the prime example along with N'SYNC, Christina Aguilera, and Backstreet Boys during that era of Pop Music. They all helped revitalize that "Mall Rat" era.

Is Beyonce being devalued here? I've long felt there's a significant difference between what chart geeks like yourselves who pay close attention to the statistics of things feel about her status in comparison to other pop stars and what the general public thinks about her status. The hyperboles I've recently seen used to describe her stardom, for instance, are staggering and they came from supposedly credible places. One writer suggested she's reached a super-sayin level of stardom only ever eclipsed by Michael Jackson.
And while she has long failed to translate the hype surrounding her into proportionate commercial success (via album sales and hits), is there any doubt she's a cultural titan who courts, at least at the moment, unparalleled respect and worship?

Yah, this is a no-brainer. Not just because of the popularity/madness, but because of the interest/dissection of what Madonna was doing in her work. She gave us great stuff to talk about, debate and ponder. She was interested in merging art and commerce, and few, if any, did it better.
It's great that she has enjoyed much musical acclaim and reverence as an artist, but her cultural impact is a prime example of an artist going way beyond being "just" an entertainer.

I really enjoyed her porno book more than her music, but she made a impact on bedrooms across the world. To be 100% when she showed us how to take the coke bottle in her mouth, it led to a sexual revolution. She taught me how to deep throat so yes her throat was appreciated for something.
Thank U .

Madonna, and before people say she did not have a equally lasting imprint musically… all i can say is she has many hits that still are played often on the oldies stations!
