Billboard said she was at #1, but didn't give a sales figure! DUMB www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6236643/ariana-grande-my-everything-debut-billboard-200 Ariana Grande's 'My Everything' Debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield | September 02, 2014 8:13 PM EDT It's Grande's second No. 1 album in less than a year, following her 'Yours Truly' debut. Ariana Grande's new album My Everything has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, giving the 21-year-old pop singer two No. 1 albums in less than a year. She's the first woman to debut at No. 1 with her first two albums since 2010. The rest of the new Billboard 200 chart's top 10, along with My Everything's official sales figure for the week ending Aug. 31 (as compiled by Nielsen SoundScan data), will be revealed on Wednesday, Sept. 3. My Everything, which was released on Aug. 25, is the follow-up to Grande's first album, Yours Truly. The latter came out on Sept. 2, 2013, and also opened atop the Billboard 200. Grande is the first woman since Susan Boyle to see her first two albums debut at No. 1. Boyle did it with I Dreamed a Dream (released in 2009) and The Gift (2010). My Everything features three singles that have reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: "Problem" featuring Iggy Azalea (which peaked at No. 2), "Break Free" featuring Zedd (No. 4) and her collaboration with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj, "Bang Bang" (No. 6). ("Bang Bang" is only available on the deluxe version of the album.) On the Hot 100 chart dated Aug. 30, all three of those songs were in the top 10 at the same time, making Grande only the second lead female artist to have three concurrent top 10 hits. (Only Adele, among lead-billed women, had done it previously.)

www.billboard.com/articles/news/6236678/ariana-grande-no-1-album-brad-paisley-kemAriana Grande Nabs Second No. 1 Album In Less Than A Year By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | September 03, 2014 Meanwhile, Brad Paisley and Kem enjoy Top 5 debuts below "My Everything." As reported earlier, Ariana Grande has scored her second No. 1 album in less than a year, as her new release, My Everything, opens atop the Billboard 200. The album, which was released Aug. 25, sold 169,000 copies in the week ending Aug. 31, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In turn, My Everything scores the second-largest sales week for a female pop artist in 2014, after the debut of Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolence (182,000). My Everything follows Grande’s debut album, Yours Truly, which came out Sept. 2, 2013. It also started in the No. 1 slot, selling 138,000 copies in its first week. Grande is the first woman to debut at No. 1 with her first two albums since 2010. Thelast woman to do so was Susan Boyle, who bowed atop the list with I Dreamed a Dream (released in 2009) and The Gift (2010). Speaking of Boyle, she and Grande are two of only three women to have charted two different No. 1 albums in less than a year since SoundScan started powering the chart in May 1991. They join LeAnn Rimes, who did it with Unchained Melody/The Early Years and You Light Up My Life — Inspirational Songs in 1997. Justin Bieber, Jay Z, One Direction, Luke Bryan and Lil Wayne are among the other acts that have managed the feat. Following Grande on the new Billboard 200 is country star Brad Paisley, who claims his ninth top 10 album with Moonshine in the Trunk debuting at No. 2 with 53,000. A chart-topping set still eludes Paisley, who is tied with Brooks & Dunn as the country artists with the most top 10 albums that also haven’t hit No. 1. Behind Paisley is R&B singer Kem, who starts at No. 3 with Promise to Love: Album IV, selling 52,000 copies in its first week. Kem’s last studio set, 2010’s Intimacy: Album III, started at No. 2 with 74,000. The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack falls 2-4 with 48,000 (down 26 percent), Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour rises 7-5 with 30,000 (up 24 percent), and last week's No. 1, Wiz Khalifa's Blacc Hollywood, falls 1-6 with 30,000 (down 67 percent). The soundtrack to Frozen moves 6-7 with 27,000 (down 5 percent), the Now 51 compilation descends 4-8 with 25,000 (down 23percent), and 5 Seconds of Summer's self-titled album falls 8-9 with 22,000 (down 8 percent). Rock band Avenged Sevenfold closes out the top 10 with a debut -- but the title isn’t a new album. The act's second album, 2003’s Waking the Fallen, arrives at No. 10 after it was reissued Aug. 25 (22,000; up 2,500 percent). It’s the fourth top 10 effort for the act. While Waking the Fallen didn’t previously chart on the Billboard 200, it did hit No. 15 on the Heatseekers Albums chart back in 2003 and spent 18 weeks on that developing artists tally. It has sold 693,000 copies through Aug. 31. Over on the Digital Songs chart, Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" holds at No. 1 for a second week, selling 340,000 downloads (down 38 percent). Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" is a non-mover as well, sitting at No. 2 for another week (251,000; down 11 percent). "Bang Bang," by Grande, Jessie J and Nicki Minaj, is stationary at No. 3, but posts a big gain -- selling 233,000 (up 47 percent). Minaj's "Anaconda" jumps 6-4 with 181,000 (up 51%), and Iggy Azalea's "Black Widow," featuring Rita Ora, slips 4-5 with 177,000 (though it’s up by 25 percent). Eminem's new song, "Guts Over Fear," featuring Sia, debuts at No. 6 with 130,000. Smith's "Stay With Me" falls 5-7 with 115,000 (down 6 percent); Grande's "Break Free," featuring Zedd, rises 17-8 with 113,000 (up 75 percent); and Maroon 5's "Maps" charts a course for No. 9 (up three spots, 94,000; up 20 percent). Charli XCX's "Boom Clap" rounds out the top 10, dipping 8-10 with 86,000 (down 11 percent). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Aug. 31) totaled 4.2 million units, up 5 percent compared with the sum last week (4 million) and down 15 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 158.7 million, down 15 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (185.9 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 20.3 million downloads, up 5 percent compared with last week (19.2 million) and down 10 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (22.6 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 774.6 million, down 13 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (888 million). Next week’s Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: Grande’s Yours Truly debuted at No. 1 with 138,000 and Tamar Braxton’s Love & War started in the No. 2 slot with 114,000. Nine Inch Nails’ Hesitation Marks (No. 3 with 107,000) and John Legend’s Love in the Future (No. 4 with 68,000) closed out the debut-filled top four.

I'm surprised at how well the G Unit EP did, haven't heard anything about them in years.

Were people saying Ariana's debut was a disappointment? The numbers seem about right to me.

Were people saying Ariana's debut was a disappointment? The numbers seem about right to me. We see this exact same exchange every week. Some people, being way too optimistic, are disappointed by the early sales estimate. Others, playing the hindsight game, say people were insane to expect anything more. The reality is somewhere in the middle. Obviously, you're not going to succeed in arguing that Ariana Grande is upset with this total. #1 album, 169K sales, and her singles are still hot as Hell. She's a superstar. But the number certainly doesn't look amazing in context. If Grande was some nobody who sold 169K after first launching this year, this would be a massive success. But she was already able to sell really well just based on existing fanbase/novelty - she sold 138K with only a decent single last year. Certainly nothing on the level of her 3 monster hits in 2014. Let alone all the hype that she was now one of the biggest names in pop. So you can't just ignore the fact that all that hype over her singles, the TV performances, the promo, the MTV special, etc only amounted to 30K new buyers*. *Actually even less than that, since "My Everything" was available for an extra day.

People forget that streaming has grown immensely since her release last year. Take for example the Bubbling Under chart this week, she has 5 songs charting there and nearly all of the tracks on the album were in the top 100 at some point on Spotify. She had a hit TV show last year which also contributed to her higher than normal first week total and it doesn't help her fan base is mostly young teens that do not buy albums anyway. As long as she continues the hit singles and the high profile appearances then she will be fine. I see this album selling 700k in the long run which would surpass her first album by quite a bit.

I'm fine with most of this, but I'd strongly disagree with the bold. Last year, it was only the core fanbase buying her album. That fanbase = 138K sales. This year, she's expanded and become a legitimate music superstar. So it's not the young, rabid kids who are declining to buy her album - it's the rest of the market.

Idina Menzel just tweeted that she's releasing a Christmas album on October 14. Could be one to watch this season.

^Even though they're sorta mashed up in Frozen, I demand a holiday-enhanced mashup of "Let It Go"/"Do You Want to Build a Snowman"? Thanks for posting the charts, Gary.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-brad-paisley-has-the-2-blues-201947725.htmlChart Watch: Brad Paisley Has the #2 BluesBy Paul Grein, Yahoo! Chart Watch Brad Paisley lands his fifth #2 album as Moonshine In The Trunk enters The Billboard 200 in the runner-up slot (53K). The country superstar has yet to reach #1. Paisley has amassed more #2 albums without a #1 than any other artist in chart history. Sheryl Crow, with four #2 albums, is in second place. (So she’s #2 on this list, too!) This is Paisley’s fourth consecutive studio album to debut (and presumably peak) at #2. It follows 2009’s American Saturday Night, 2011’s This Is Country Music and 2013’s Wheelhouse. Paisley first reached the runner-up slot with 2005’s Time Well Wasted. Moonshine is Paisley’s ninth top 10 album. That puts him in a tie with Brooks & Dunn as the country act with the most top 10 albums without a #1. Brooks & Dunn amassed nine top 10 albums from 1993 to 2009. Their highest-charting album, Hillbilly Deluxe, reached #3 in September 2005. But don’t feel too badly for Paisley. Moonshine is his eighth consecutive studio album to reach #1 on Top Country Albums. The cover of Paisley’s album shows the trunk of a car, with Paisley’s image barely visible as a reflection. This is the third time Paisley hasn’t appeared on the cover of one of his albums. He was also missing from the cover of 2006’s Brad Paisley Christmas and 2008’s Play. All of these albums would probably have sold better with a nice shot of Paisley on the cover. Paisley’s album was kept out of the top spot on The Billboard 200 by Ariana Grande's My Everything, which debuted with a solid, but still somewhat disappointing, sales tally of 169K. We posted a separate blog on Grande’s album earlier today. If you missed it, here’s a link. KEM's fourth studio album, Promise To Love: Album IV, debuts at #3 (52K). It’s the R&B artist’s third album in arrow to reach the top five. Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix, Vol. 1 drops from #2 to #4 in its fifth week (48K). It’s #1 on Top Soundtracks for the fifth week. The movie was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. This was its third weekend in the lead. Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour rebounds from #7 to #5 in its 11th week (30K). The album has been in the top 10 the entire time. The album has done even better in Smith’s native U.K. This is its 14th consecutive week in the top five there. The album is a very good bet to sweep the Grammy nominations in December. A deluxe reissue of Avenged Sevenfold's 2003 album Waking The Fallen finally enters The Billboard 200 for the first time at #10 (22K). It’s the band’s fourth top 10 album. It’s #1 on Top Catalog Albums, displacing Boston's Greatest Hits. This marks the first time that a catalog album has cracked the top 10 on The Billboard 200 since a reissue of Led Zeppelin's eponymous 1969 debut album reached #7 in June. Beyonce's Beyonce vaults from #44 to #14 in its 38th week, in the wake of her show-capping performance on the VMAs. The album has sold 2,055,000 copies—and it’s not done yet. The album will likely be a Grammy finalist for Album Of The Year. Royal Blood's debut album opens at #30. The album enters The U.K.'s Official Album Chart at #1. The British rock duo consists of Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher. Ariana Grande's debut album, Yours Truly, rebounds from #71 to #40 in its 48th week. The album has sold 495K copies since its release in September 2013. Coming Attractions: Look for Maroon 5 V to debut at #1 next week, with sales in the 145K range. Jeezy's Seen It All: The Autobiography will probably open at #2 (90K). Counting Crows's Somewhere Under Wonderland will probably open around #5 (28K).

This is the fourth time that Paisley has been shut out from the top spot by a female artist:
Ariana Grande (2014) Paramore (2013) Lady Gaga (2011) Now 31 (2009) Hilary Duff (2005)
I'm counting Paramore since they're fronted by a female.

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/chart-alert/6243944/billboard-200-chart-moves-brad-paisley-the-ever-elusive-no-1Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Brad Paisley & The Ever-Elusive No. 1 AlbumBy Keith Caulfield | September 05, 2014 8:42 PM EDT Of course, there was lots of chart action elsewhere on the chart. Let's take a closer look: – Brad Paisley, Moonshine in the Trunk – No. 2 – Brad Paisley has the kind of history on the Billboard 200 that a chart geek loves. The country star has racked up five No. 2 albums -- including his new Moonshine in the Trunk, which debuts at No. 2 -- but has yet to claim a No. 1. That achievement makes him the artist with the most No. 2 albums without a No. 1. He was previously tied with Sheryl Crow, who has four runner-up sets without a chart-topper. While Moonshine wasn't close to topping the chart (its 53,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan, is well behind Grande's My Everything, with 169,000), Paisley has come much closer previously. His closest call to No. 1 came with 2013's Wheelhouse. It missed the top slot by nearly 6,000 copies, denied by Paramore's self-titled album (100,000 versus 106,000). In total, Moonshine is Paisley's ninth top 10 album, which ties him with Brooks & Dunn as the country acts with the most top 10 albums without a No. 1. Curious as to what other No. 1-less acts have racked up a bevy of top 10s? Kiss, 311 and Crow have nine, The Who and Sting have 10, and James Taylor has 11. But the kings of having the most top 10s without a No. 1 are 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Rush, with a staggering 12 top 10s. Rush's most recent studio set, 2012's Clockwork Angels, debuted and peaked at No. 2 on June 30 -- stuck behind Usher's also-arriving Looking 4 Myself. — Sam Smith, In the Lonely Hour – No. 5 – The album jumps past the half-million sales mark (with another 30,000 sold in the week ending Aug. 31, bringing its total to 523,000). It remains the top-selling debut full-length album released in 2014. — Steffany Gretzinger, The Undoing – No. 20 – Steffany Gretzinger sees her solo debut arrive with 13,000 sold and an entry at No. 2 on Top Christian Albums. Gretzinger is from the Bethel Music collective of artists, which earned its first top 10 album earlier this year with You Make Me Brave: Live at the Civic (No. 10 on May 10). — Ed Sheeran, Don't (EP) – No. 54 – This four-song set, featuring a Rick Ross-aided remix of the title track, is Sheeran's fourth EP to reach a Billboard chart, but his first to sell enough to reach the Billboard 200. (In 2012, he charted two EPs on the Folk Albums chart and one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list with Yelawolf). — Jeff LaBar, One for the Road (EP) – No. 130 – The guitarist for rock band Cinderella makes his solo debut, exactly 28 years after the group's debut set Night Songs broke into the top 25 on Sept. 13, 1986. —Aerosmith, 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection – No. 134 – The long-running, budget-priced series continues to be popular with CD buyers, as 96 percent of this album's total sales (698,000) are on the physical format. Universal says that the product line has sold 62 million, with 97 percent of those sales on CD.

Billboard and other sites also said that Arianna's first album was heavily discounted as well. So when she sold 138K she was over performing due to the discounts and she would have normally sold a lot less. This latest album showed a modest gain but also wasn't discounted.

But at the same time, if the album was heavily discounted in week one, it would also explain why "Yours Truly" took a harder fall (almost 80%) in week two. So that would raise question about whether "My Everything" is truly holding up better this week.
